Oct. 8th-10th (3-Day Holiday Weekend)
Oct. 10th (National Holiday - Sports Day)
Oct. 15th (Next Giveaway Begins, 500,000 copies)

**********

Rough tenth weekend drop in store as expected following the discount day last weekend + giveaway/special showings, but most holdovers are down similarly hard post the discount day weekend last week. The holiday Monday will help Sunday across the board at least (OP could see a respectable 30/35% hold vs last Sun, for example).

So, with it staying above all the holdovers and with the openers disappointing, it has locked up a 10th consecutive weekend at #1. Only seven films in the past have managed to achieve 10 weekends at #1, and just six consecutively, so One Piece will be the eighth and seventh film to be added to those elusive clubs.

And... since next weekend begins the next giveaway, it's very likely to achieve an 11th consecutive weekend at #1, too.

Good to hear. The better these films continue to do worldwide, the quicker they're likely to be released outside of Japan (and a few key markets), and possibly even even more markets, too.

That window has already been cut way down in recent years (used to take a good 6 months to a year (or more) for some films to be released outside Japan), with films seeing releases as early as one or two months later.

**********

Very, very impressive Sunday! Sundays before a holiday Monday are generally strong due to increase evening business, and that really helped here by giving us just 12% or so decline for the day in admissions versus last week. And thanks to that, it should bring the weekend drop to a a respectable ~35% in revenue (~40% in admissions). This is quite good following an inflated weekend last week.

As mentioned, it's achieved a 10th consecutive weekend atop the box office, and with the next giveaway beginning next weekend, it'll also earn an 11th consecutive weekend at #1, too. This effectively maxes out its full potential in holding the #1 spot for so long, I feel, as SAO has been *expected* to debut at #1 over the Oct. 22-23rd weekend since its opening on Saturday.

Monday is a holiday, and given how well it's done on holidays in the past, I would expect a strong number. Maybe not Sunday strong, but it'll almost certainly be higher than Saturday. I'd expect a 100%+ increase for another ¥100 million+ day tomorrow.

A bit tricky to estimate this one, but I want to have this out since actuals will be delayed until Tuesday due to the holiday tomorrow. It's down around 13% in admissions versus last weekend (at the usuals), but last week had those special 4K showings that greatly boosted its avg. ticket price even beyond its already high average (specially priced tickets are immune to discount days). So... taking an extra 10% off for a ~23% drop seems somewhat reasonable to me. We'll see in a couple of days.

It had a super impressive Sunday, by the way, up around 30% in admissions vs last Sunday, but the Saturday was down over 35% vs last Saturday. Very unusual situation here, which I have to link to a major disparity in showings on each individual day vs last week.

It may have also fallen outside the Top 10 for the first time, at least it did in admissions at the usual locations (11th). But there's a good chance its high avg. ticket price will keep in there for a 20th consecutive week in revenue.

It's going to be tight. It largely depends on how long Towa Pictures keeps it playing in theaters (exclusively).

But do note that because of the awful exchange rate (ridiculously strong dollar), the worst in 24 years, its gross would have been over $100 million in every other year since 1998, a number of which would be significantly over $100 million ($110m, $125m, $150m+).

Upcoming Key Dates/Weekends:
Oct. 15th (Next Giveaway Begins, 500,000 copies)

**********

Excellent holiday Monday. Admissions on par with Sunday (maybe slightly higher since Mon. is also Aeon Cinema Day), though I went with a slightly less gross since holidays typically have lower avg. ticket prices (as well as Aeon Day) from more kids/families coming out.

Over 12 million admissions now, too, and around 30,000 away from entering the Top 15 there.

And just a little over ¥500 million to go to enter the All-Time Top 10 in revenue! I was thinking this would occur around the end of the month, but with next weekend being a giveaway, that'll give it a boost, of course, and probably get it there with a week or so to spare.

Can anyone tell me where to find the ONE PIECE franchise overview?

The search function is not really helpful...

Here you go! Note: The updated total (revenue) came in a lot higher than I had estimated above because I forgot to add Monday's estimate to the cumulative total... I'll fix that in the next daily tracker update tomorrow.

Very strange run of this franchise...

Started with 2m admissions, went down to 0.8m from 2006-2008, rebounded in 2009 with 4.1m, did great in 2012/16/19 and exploded in 2022…

Actuals are way too high compared to estimates, I think mimorin must've missed numbers last week (which explains why tuesday looks too good as well).

Yeah. The early films were your typical "low-quality" anime movies, original non-canon stories that gradually declined over time from little appeal to the fans. The anime/manga, while among the biggest back then, hadn't reached the status it would soon acquire either.

Everything changed in 2009, however, when the manga/anime reached a major point in the story that caused an explosion in sales to happen. From 2010-2012, the manga sold 93 million copies in Japan alone.

As for the film franchise, the series creator (Oda) got involved with the production of the next film (2009's One Piece Film Strong World), as well as writing the story, drawing the character designs, etc., which was loosely linked to the canon. As such, the fanbase turned out big time and made it the biggest film in the franchise. This was released right when the manga sales were exploding, too.

Ever since that boom began in 2009/2010, Oda has been involved with the films and they've greatly benefitted. And the manga series has become the second biggest comic series of all time worldwide selling (or copies in circulation, rather) over 500 million copies (416,566,000 in Japan alone as of August 2022), only second to Superman.

I forgot to add Monday's gross to the total when I updated yesterday (should have been ¥16.762 billion). The admissions only came in about ~10,000 higher.

Tuesday being flat (maybe slightly up) versus last week appears to be natural (maybe a bit of a post-holiday bump if enough people took Tuesday off to give themselves a 4-day weekend or something).

I was confused, too, don't worry, haha, especially when I saw the weekend was close (¥230m vs ¥221m), as well as the cumulative admissions (12.08 vs 12.07).

I'll just correct it with tomorrow's update. Not a lot of time today, and I have to post the Weekend Actuals (plus charts galore) later this evening, so the daily tracker will have to wait for tomorrow.

>One Piece Film Red achieves a 10th consecutive weekend atop the box office, becoming only the sixth film (known, since 1998 at least) to ever do so. It's inching closer and closer to the All-Time Top 10, which it should crack within the next two weeks. And after Monday (holiday), its admissions have reached 12,084,368! It became the 15th Most Attended Film on Tuesday.

>Silent Parade continues to do solid business, and just might be able to reach the ¥3 billion milestone. Chances are it finishes with ~¥2.8/2.9 billion, but another solid week (or more) could make ¥3 billion more likely. Thanks to it, September and October won't go without a hit film at least.

>Top Gun: Maverick pulled off the hold required for it to achieve an outstanding 20th consecutive weekend in the Top 10! Admissions after Monday are up to 8,169,797. It also surpassed Bohemian Rhapsody on Sunday to become the highest-grossing live-action film in the market since Avatar.

>Avatar's re-release concludes with ¥304,179,900 ($2.1 million) and 139,317 admissions. As mentioned, it's been counted separately for now, but re-releases earnings have been added to the original grosses in recent years later on, so I would expect the same to happen here at some point. When added to the original gross, that brings it up to ¥15.90 billion ($169.8 million) and 10.45 million admissions.

If anyone has any questions about the other films, feel free to ask.
