**********

Monday and Tuesday have been adjusted to share their actuals since we got updates for both days due to the holiday and ¥15 billion milestone being surpassed.

Strong weekdays so far. Tuesday was up about 13/14% over last week, and Wednesday is barely down (2/3% at the usuals), but it may be flat/slightly up based on Tuesday. This is, of course, due to the giveaway effect as well as Silver Week. 09/20-22 aren't holidays, but since the past weekend (09/17-19) and this upcoming weekend (09/23-25) are 3-day holiday weekends, people are taking some of the weekdays in-between off so they can have an even longer holiday period. People who take all three weekdays off could have 9 consecutive days off work this year.

Avatar (¥15.6 billion) and Ponyo (¥15.5 billion) should be surpassed on either Saturday or Sunday. Although the re-release of Avatar this weekend might keep it safe for another day or so.

**********

Very impressive Thursday, up around 34% versus last week. The day started off a bit slow, but became stronger and stronger, especially in the evening. With Friday being a holiday, I suspect many either took the day off (for a 4-day holiday weekend) or left early.

As mentioned, tomorrow is a national holiday, so expect a large Friday, probably over a 100% increase versus last week. I don't think it'll match Monday, but I still believe it'll do over 100,000 admissions and perhaps gross ¥150 million or so.

It should be around ¥200-225m shy of Ponyo, and ¥300-325m shy of Avatar, after Friday. Both films will certainly be overtaken after Sunday (Ponyo possibly on Saturday). Avatar's re-release is relatively small, and I don't expect it'll make enough to hold onto its position on the all-time chart this weekend.

Avatar isn't big scale but PS looks alright, pretty sure it's going to hold the weekend. Thinking ~15.65M tops by sun for OPR with 16b on next weekend I guess.

Oh nvm, friday is doing better than monday for OP. Could take it then. Though Avatar is also in the top10 and I imagine ATP will be very high.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Silver Week 2022; OP Exceeds ¥15 Billo
Super impressive Friday, indeed. Matching Monday would have been amazing, but beating it is pretty shocking. Far and away the best increase in the top 10 (and like second/third best in the entire top 25), up nearly 300% versus last week. Looks like it did so well, that it even broke 11 million admissions on Friday (day 49), too.

Avatar fell outside the top 10 in admissions, but like you said, it'll have a very high average ticket price, so probably managed to crack it in revenue. Guessing it sold ~17,000-19,000 admissions for the day (double the usual locations), which could be as much as ¥35/40 million with a high ATP. Saturday and Sunday won't be much higher than Friday, if at all for some films, since it was a holiday, so I'm guessing it's aiming for ~¥100-125 million ($700,000-900,000) over the three-day.

One Piece would need a very poor weekend to not surpass its overall total (~¥15.7-15.72 billion) after Sunday.

I wasn't going to be surprised by a 100%+ increase versus last week, but a ~280% increase? Definitely surprising, and I think this is a good sign of later legs since such an increase on a holiday should indicate appeal to many different audiences. I mean, we know it's been attracting all sorts of people already with its performance, but having it reaffirmed at this stage (as general/casual audiences come out more on holidays) is a good sign.

Ponyo (¥15.5 billion) will be exceeded on Saturday, and Avatar (¥15.6 billion + its re-release earnings this weekend) will likely be surpassed on Sunday (Monday at the latest, I presume), for it to claim the #11 spot on the All-Time Gross Chart. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (¥17.3 billion) will be the next target needed to enter the All-Time Top 10.

It also rose another spot, up to #16, on the All-Time Admissions Chart, surpassing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (11.0 million) today. It'll likely crack the Top 15 (surpassing The Last Samurai's 12.10 million), and could climb a couple more spots after that, too.

I shaved off 5,000 admissions from Friday to account for the preliminary admissions update of 11.26 million (I had 11.27 million).

It was #1 for its eighth consecutive weekend, and depending on what the re-release of Avatar did this weekend, it's now the 11th Highest Grossing Film of All-Time.

Avatar debuted in 9th place this weekend in admissions (probably 8th in revenue), and would have needed to earn over ¥100 million in its first three days. I haven't seen any numbers reported for it yet, but I have it right around ¥100 million, so we'll need to wait and see when actuals for both come in later.

If the re-release was enough to keep Avatar in the 11th spot on the All-Time Chart as of Sunday, though, One Piece will have overtaken it on Monday.

Deadline says that Top Gun: Maverick was again the highest-earning Hollywood movie for the weekend, so I guess the Avatar re-release didn't do great.

Yeah, TGM was 5th this weekend in admissions (probably 4th in revenue).

Avatar's re-release debuted in 9th place in admissions (probably 8th in revenue). It didn't receive a very wide release, however (200 screens versus the normal ~350 for a very wide release). I could be wrong once the sequel comes out, but I don't think the first film is *that* highly regarded in the market. It did great at the box office, of course, but was still off 41% from Titanic. And home video sales weren't anything crazy, and the TV broadcasts, to my knowledge, have never pulled in huge ratings. It seemed much more a beneficiary of the 3D fad from 2010-2012 in Japan.

So... It did well in terms of re-releases, but relative to its status in other markets, not so much I feel.

I don't think anything will dethrone it next weekend, so 9 weeks at #1 looks pretty good. 10 weeks or more, we'll have to wait and see. 11 weeks should be the maximum here, though, if it manages to fend off the openers over the next three weeks, because Sword Art Online should end its run on Oct. 22nd.

The $ gross drop from Avatar to Avatar 2 in Japan is going to be brutal as hell.

I know... using the current exchange rate, the first film loses over $60 million. And unlike most markets, there's not really any inflation/ticket price increases to make any of that up. The first film even had a higher avg. ticket price than most films today.

I'd like to think the dollar will weaken in the next 3 months but it's gotten even stronger, so no reason to expect it to until it does. And unless the US enters a sudden, severe recession, the dollar won't be able to recover to anything near favorable even if it does improve a bit.

And that's betting on Avatar 2 doing as well as Avatar did in the market, which I don't see happening. Not to mention the 3D decline causing the average price to drop. I think overall $ gross could decline over 60%.
