This should likely be in 8 days, though there's a slim chance it did it in 7 days, so I'll leave it as a possibility until we know for certain. This was one of those other lists that looked nigh impossible for anything to ever top or realistically challenge, but here we are. It took 17 years, but it finally happened (three times!).

How crazy is it that the three fastest films to ¥5 billion have come from the past 3 years now? One film from each year so far this decade. And it's not even much of an inflation thing since tickets aren't much higher now versus 15-20 years ago.

In fact, The Matrix Reloaded had a higher avg. ticket price than all three films that have beaten it now. And Howl's Moving Castle (on OW) is just barely below Demon Slayer's atp (and just 7% behind JJK0 and OP). And the top three films are also the highest in terms of admissions after their respective days in release, too.

I was expecting a bit more (at least 100,000), but it's still a great presale number to achieve on its second Saturday (on par/bigger than a lot of 1st Saturdays).

And it is a holiday week. More casual audiences are out.

I'm thinking... ~275,000-300,000 today (usuals), so ~500,000-550,000 (nationwide). ~¥715-785 million second Saturday.

And bullza, since DBS is so low, dropping down to 139 theaters nationwide (still wide technically, but not by much), estimating it each day isn't really worth anything. For example, I'm guessing it earned about ¥4 million ($30,000) on Thursday. What I'll do since you're tracking the film closely is give you a rough estimate on what it earned Mon.-Fri. instead.

Ah thanks you're a good one. I've been following this thread closely.

By the way that avatar is very cool, what's it from? I know it's Ace but is it a movie poster or something?

I'm estimating that DBS earned ~¥21 million (~$160,000) from Mon-Fri. So, should be around ¥2.463 billion now. Guessing it'll earn ¥10 million or a little more over the weekend, and maybe ¥4/5 million on Monday. Should be near ¥2.48/2.49 billion roughly when Obon Festival concludes next Wednesday or so. From there, it'll hit ¥2.5 billion after a few days (or a week, perhaps), and probably finish its run a couple weeks later.

Well... Saturday is looking much stronger than presales indicated. It's super early, but it's at a ridiculous 78% occupancy just after 9:30 and is currently up more than double over Friday (Fri. mornings tend to be slower, so keep that in mind) and down just 22% versus last Saturday (not sure if last Sat. has United included now or not though).

And Aeon's website entered a waiting period to reserve seats, too.

The only thing to watch is when Typhoon Meari moves through later this evening, which is forecast to make landfall near Tokyo. It's not a major typhoon (I think it's been downgraded to tropical storm status, too), but it could impact evening/night sales if it lands in Tokyo.

Seeing it reported all over now, too. Very cool they announced it super early in the day, right as it happened. They really wanted to get that announcement out. :funny:

And yeah, definitely pleased with how Saturday is looking. Rather than comparing it to last Saturday (since it was missing nearly all of United), if you compare it to Sunday instead, it's tracking just barely below.

I want to be careful about overpredicting the Saturday at this state, because of the storm coming through Tokyo later, but looks to me it's on track for 325,000-350,000 at the usuals (minus Aeon), which would get it over 600,000 nationwide (maybe 625,000). That'd likely give it ¥800-900 million today, and maybe guarantee a second weekend of ~¥1.5 billion and ~1.1 million admissions. I think Sunday will see a bigger drop (a bit less spillover, the giveaway already gone after one day), so don't want to predict much higher for now.

Surely at this rate it's a guarantee to take the title of highest grossing film of the year from JJK.

It really isn't that sure a thing. Its total by sunday will probably come in above JJK's by like 800M-1b or so, but OP has already played a second giveaway card as well as debuting in all formats (meaning no expansion later in its run). So JJK can definitely end up overtaking later in its run depending on how OP holds from here, although OP beating it is a possibility of course.

I sort of figured it was at around ¥2.46 billion too.

¥2.5 billion seems highly likely now. I'm kinda wondering though can if surpass Super Android 13's ¥2.55 billion? That's the last little goal for it I imagine. Would get it in the top 5 Dragon Ball movies.

But it would need near another ¥100 million or so.

Also, guys... I know this thread gets a lot of traffic. The views speak for itself, especially in the past three or four years. I keep track of this data (I'm a nerd). We exceeded 1 million views (1.032m) last year, up from almost 900,000 in 2020. And we only have around 25/30(?) regular members here.

And if you Google "Japan Box Office", this thread is the 3rd(!!!) result just below BOM (weird #1, and unfortunate given their inaccuracy) and a Wikipedia page. We're even above Crunchyroll and the official Japanese movie association (Eiren) in Japan.

I've even seen my own posts, be it writers basically taking my words to include in their articles on ANN (Anime News Network, Crunchyroll, or elsewhere), or people on Twitter sharing information from here in threads. I saw an image of this thread just the other day (the Biggest OWs of All-Time) shared on Twitter. We've also been referenced or been used as a source on Reddit. I don't mind, I'm glad people are finding value in it (although mentioning our forum as the source would be nice).

So... with all that said, I'm glad my thread I still largely do as a fun hobby that began over a decade ago now provides a lot of information for people. I don't want to gloat, but there's data here that if lost, is basically gone forever unless I share it somewhere else (and there's so much, I may not have it all saved myself) or someone spends the endless personal hours I have (with the help of some of you too) putting together over the years.

If you can, members and lurkers alike, please consider donating to us via paypal or other payments here: wokjfunds@gmail.com

We're a tiny forum that's just become smaller over the years. Everything helps. Thank you!

Well said! As Algren mentioned, this thread is the pride of WOKJ!

One Piece Film Red - Daily Tracker

Sat. (08/06): ¥1,232,095,230 ($9.1 million) / 869,407
Sun. (08/07): ¥1,022,141,800 ($7.6 million) / 710,145
Mon. (08/08): ~¥590,000,000 ($4.4 million) / ~420,000
Tues. (08/09): ~¥465,000,000 ($3.4 million) / ~325,000
Wed. (08/10): ~¥525,000,000 ($3.9 million) / ~385,000
Thur. (08/11): ~¥590,000,000 ($4.4 million) / ~415,000 *Holiday*
Fri. (08/12): ~¥545,000,000 ($4.1 million) / ~380,000
Sat. (08/13): ~¥785,000,000 ($5.9 million) / ~550,000

Cumulative Total (8-Days): ~¥5,754,237,030 ($42.8 million) / ~4,054,522

**********

Still the second highest total after each of its respective days in release, and it's the second fastest film to ever reach 4 million admissions, too.

Very good. I wasn't up, but the evening shows looked rather slow across the board, so the tropical storm may have deflated the box-office just a little. Don't think the impact was that big judging by this and the others, but still worth noting.

Sunday is going to be a really important day. Normally, it would likely come in a little below Saturday, but with the giveaway and stage greetings yesterday, it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect a sharp decline. So, if it does decline as expected due to this, let's say 25-30%, it'll likely begin to drop off rather hard post-Obon Festival. But if it holds steady, say 10-15%, then it could indicate it'll show some decent legs post the holiday period.

% changes versus same day last week.

Since last Saturday didn't have United Cinemas included, we can't really say how films increased/decreases over last week. So, I excluded the % changes for 08/13. Might be able to shave off about 10% or so, but that's just some rough guess work. One Piece and Jurassic World saw decreases, while Kingdom 2 (maybe, borderline), Minions 2, and Top Gun 2 saw increases.

I think sunday could be a tad better than normal from typhoon diverting some business.

Sunday was solid, off ~20% from Saturday. A tad above what I'd say is a good hold under normal conditions, but with the giveaway and stage greetings boosting Saturday, a ~20% drop is good. Hard to really know what impact the typhoon/tropical storm hard. It weakened Saturday a bit in the evening, so it could have kept the Sunday from dropping more. But I think the overall impact was minimal.

I'll have the One Piece Daily Tracker, Obon Festival Estimates, and where OP's estimated second weekend will place it on the all-time charts (it's very high) posted quite soon since I have some things to do today.

One Piece Film Red - Daily Tracker

Sat. (08/06): ¥1,232,095,230 ($9.1 million) / 869,407
Sun. (08/07): ¥1,022,141,800 ($7.6 million) / 710,145
Mon. (08/08): ~¥590,000,000 ($4.4 million) / ~420,000
Tues. (08/09): ~¥465,000,000 ($3.4 million) / ~325,000
Wed. (08/10): ~¥525,000,000 ($3.9 million) / ~385,000
Thur. (08/11): ~¥590,000,000 ($4.4 million) / ~415,000 *Holiday*
Fri. (08/12): ~¥545,000,000 ($4.1 million) / ~380,000
Sat. (08/13): ~¥785,000,000 ($5.9 million) / ~550,000
Sun. (08/14): ~¥620,000,000 ($4.6 million) / ~435,000

Cumulative Total (9-Days): ~¥6,374,237,030 ($47.4 million) / ~4,489,522

**********

Huge second weekend. Depending on the actual, it even beat the OW of Film Z in revenue. And, it's higher than the 3-Day OW of Stampede... The second weekend is basically what its OW could have been. I think it's a tad shy of 1 million admissions over its sophomore frame, so if there's a goal to hit above the estimate here, it'll be coming in ~15,000 admissions higher to grab that.

And Monday is looking quite good. Not a prediction, but at a glance, I'd say it could match last Tuesday.

Some notes:

-Second Fastest Film to Exceed ¥6 billion. *Also only the second film in history to be above 6 billion after its second weekend.*
-Second Highest Two-Week Total (Revenue and Admissions). *This includes second highest total after every day since it opened.*
-4th or 5th Biggest Second Weekend Ever (Revenue, need to double-check Admissions).

The fact that it will surpass FILM Z soon, and it's breaking many records is insane to me. I thought OP peaked a long time ago.

Even if drops insanely next week, I'm already satisfied with this performance. I still believe 10b is not easily achievable.

Could beat out SA for 2nd fastest to 10b maybe? Even 2x 40% weekly drop is good enough for that. Though with obon ending, could just fall much harder than that.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Obon Festival Begins/Important Info Pg
It'd be fairly shocking if it missed ¥10 billion now. It would truly need to fall apart after Obon Festival. It'll likely be comfortably above ¥7 billion (~¥7.1/7.2 billion) after Tuesday, and perhaps near ¥7.5 billion after Wednesday.

The third weekend will probably drop big, wouldn't be surprised by a 50% decline (post-holidays and post-giveaway), but even then, that's a third weekend around ¥700 million. Using some rough estimates for this upcoming Thur. and Fri. (giving them 50%+ drops vs last week), its three week (16-day) total could be something like ¥8.5 billion. It can't miss ¥10 billion if it's that high after next Sunday and coming off a third weekend around ¥700 million. It still has a couple weeks left of summer vacation dailies, too.

As to when/how fast it gets there, I think it's too early to say. Doing some rough math, using ~¥8.5 billion as an estimate after next Sunday (this is giving it 50%+ drops from next Thursday-Sunday, remember), I can see it getting to ¥10 billion in 30 days or less, and that's using some hefty drops.

IF it would see a collapse post-Obon, and we'd have to see more than 50% weekly drops, more like 60%, it's still going to get close enough that Toei would do something to get it there. Evangelion 3.0+1.0 got pushed and pushed and pushed until it got over ¥10 billion last year, and One Piece Film Red will be in a much better (higher) position to get there. Eva 3.0+1.0 was stalling around ¥8.5-9 billion well into its run, if I recall, and One Piece will be around that after next week.
