Does he keep pushing it back to buy them enough time to be able to deliver the next technological breakthrough by the time it's released? He has quite a reputation to uphold, he knows he best come correct or not at all.

It's guaranteed to disappoint. Whether technologically or financially or both.

If he sets this is space it will totally beat the first. If he doesn't no one gives a cur.

I am still having faith in Cameron/Avatar franchise and then Fox's marketing department could be very effective when they want to. I also believe not having a movie for 13 years after Titanic helped Avatar which would similarly help Avatar 2 and after that its on the movie itself to hook its audience. I am sure Avatar 2 will go down in admissions but if it doesn't then it would most likely be the first movie to cross $1b domestically.

Cameron recently said: "The interesting conceit of the Avatar sequels is it’s pretty much the same characters. There are new characters and a lot of new settings and creatures, so I’m taking characters you know and putting them in unfamiliar places and moving them on this greater journey. But it’s not a whole bunch of new characters every time. There’s not a new villain every time, which is interesting. Same guy. Same motherfucker through all four movies. He is so good and he just gets better. I know Stephen Lang is gonna knock this out of the park."

Interesting, and that alone has multiplied my interest in these sequels. I believe Cameron knows what to do. Many franchises fall into these pitfalls of needing a new villain each time, and I believe that Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5 will be refreshing for not being the same, but it is also a worry that these five films also need to stand alone and not merge into one. That will be a feat, especially with no villains to differentiate them.

Sigourney Weaver, if her character is in all sequels will be 76 yrs old when Avatar 5 comes out in 2025!

But all the sequels are being filmed at the same time, which will be 3-4 years prior, so she will only look 72 years old. ;)

I'd be curious to see the estimate for what the sequels cost in total. You gain efficiencies through a consolidated production schedule (are they all shooting at once, I assumed...) but I wouldn't be surprised if the cost approaches $750m. If prints and advertising for all 4 movies is another $750m then that's $1.5m in total production costs. Multiply by 2 to get a very rough break-even approximation and you see why they're making sequels.

$3 billion will be made before Avatar 3 hits. The rest is profit.

Filming for the main cast is done for Avatar 2 and 3.

Avatar 2 comes 11 years after the first. I'm feeling the 2nd won't see a huge dropoff from the first.

Well that was done in secret!

The second one will probably still make $500m+ with 70% retention. It may have 80% retention seeing that it will be 11 years between films so $600m would be about right.

The third and fourth films should free fall though.

Be hilarious if Avatar 1 reclaims the top spot with it's re-release and then later Avatar 2 takes the crown.

YAAASSSS! Get em James Cameron!

The King of the World will reclaim his (rightful) place as holder of the #1 movie of all time (still top 2 adjusted - Titanic and Avatar).

I'm all for it!
