Post Indiana Jones 5 predictions
Quote:
The hat is officially out of the bag. On Monday Shia Labeouf let slip that a follow up to Indiana Jones And The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was on the cards and now Frank Marshall has pretty much confirmed it, suggesting that Indy V could be approaching the pencil-chewing script development stage.

Although he didn't specify timelines, Marshall told Empire that ideas would be worked on with a view to green-lighting production sooner rather than later. "It's really about the script," says the veteran Indy producer. "Once we see that, we'll see. We're not going to wait another 20 years. We'd all love to make another one. I'm anxious to hear the idea!"

But are Mssrs. Spielberg, Ford and Lucas equally sold on a fifth outing for the whip-cracking archeologist? "Yeah. We had a great time making the last one and, as Harrison said, we need to make this one soon. We're not getting any younger."

With Ford fast approaching his 67th birthday, time is definitely of the essence. Up may have raised the bar for the ageing adventurers, but Indy showed signs of creakiness in The Crystal Skull and it's safe to rule out too many rolling boulder chases or collapsing rope bridges from a further sequel. Hopefully the same goes for the gopher.

One caveat to all this is the lack of a concrete idea. As Marshall told us: "Until there's a script, nothing's definite. I haven't heard the idea." Here's your chance to play George Lucas and post your most mind-bending McGuffins below...

Hmmm, what money could IJ5 do?

I think less than Indy4. $250m-ish.

Unless Lucas greenlights it, this does not mean much. Rumors of Indy4 were going on for ever and there were scripts which spielberg supposedly liked it but not lucas.

Obviously hype wont be there for this one but it still has the pedigree. Tough to predict without knowing the dates and competition. I hope it is not 2011. That is just a crazy year.

Depends on the marketing and the premise. The marketing needs to play up on the fact that it's going to be the final one. If they can do that successfully and the premise looks decent enough, this could be a Sith-lite. And as much as people might have been "offended" by the last one, they'll come back for more Indy. He's just as enduring as he is endearing. The quality just has to be good enough to where people will see it more than once.

I'm guessing it'll be better than Indy 4, but will only make 250-275m. Hopefully a strong OS performance could keep it overall successful.

The last one had piss poor WOM (B at Cinemascore, B- at Yahoo). I'm thinking more like a finish under 250 million.

It depends on if this is good, and resonates with the general public unlike Indy 4. I think if they make a film that old Indy fans will like, than it will open considerably lower due to the bad previous WOM but could find some legs and end up performing well over all.
I'm not sure this will ever come to fruition though. I think they'll have a hard time getting a decent story-line rolling.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

Film wont happen. Even if it did, Harrison Ford wont return which would result in the film dropping as much as Terminator Salvation percentage wise. Shia aint no Ford

It really depends on the quality (assuming it happens and Ford's the star). Even with Crystal Skull's mediocre response, Indy's enough of an icon to get a nice opening. I imagine a three-day weekend in the $80-90m range. Word-of-mouth on the level of something like Last Crusade would carry it quite well, I'd think. So I can see it going as high as $350m. But more likely...

Yeah, $250 million range.

Harrison Ford's in good shape, but still.

Um, Harrison Ford would return, he said that he wants to, what makes you think that he wouldn't?

He is the star of the movie and Lucas has already said that there will never be an Indiana Jones movie without Harrison Ford as the lead.

The last film had very lukewarm wom imo. I could see it fail to get to $250 m. If it dips like SW Ep 2 did after TPM, that would leave it with a $228 m total. Both IJ4 and TPM were hyped returns to big franchises, but also had lukewarm wom that will hurt their follow up films. They at least need to have a more intriguing concept for the next film.

Will depend a lot on quality. As The Dark Shape has said, The Last Crusade was carried a long way by great reception.

It'll still gross less than the last one. The huge anticipation factor won't be there. I see around $250-270 million.

And yet, ROTS didn't even come close to The Phantom Menace's gross and that after 6 years of inflation.

But it still outgrossed AOTC by a wide margin. Hell, even if you factor inflation, ROTS did like 10%-15% better than AOTC.

Point is that despite the bad taste of IJ4, I think IJ5 still has potential to do 300m+ if they make the right film.

But AOTC was the one that took the hit from TPM...I don't think AOTC was particularly disliked (after expectations were low for it anyway). The franchise rebounded in its "third" film. In Indy's case it'd be just the "second" after the revival.

I feel like a reboot directed Abrams would've had much more potential than this, Chris Pratt or not

This will depend on so many circumstances...

He will get a young co-star again. That's a give. If that co-star is Chris Pratt = $$$$$$

Either way, with inflation, I believe we are in for another $300+ million Indy.
