Wasn't Shrek 2 going to open in Italy this weekend? I would how well it did.

Ya, it probably did place #1 in Italy however, its results were nowhere super blockbuster status.....

Finding Nemo - $6.6m (5-Day - 470 TC)
The Incredibles - $5.4m (524 TC/ 755p)
Shrek 2 - $3.5m (424 TC)
Brother Bear - $2.7m (€1,970,883 or $2,448,302/$2,437,867^ - 439 TC)
Toy Story 2 - $2.1m (234 TC)
Shrek - $1m (319 TC)

http://www.variety.com/article/VR111791 ... Id=13&cs=1

"Shrek 2" triumphed in Italy, corralling about $3.5 million on 424 locations, 202% bigger than the first "Shrek," which wasn't great in that market. That brought its estimated cume to $450 million, beating domestic's $436 million.

The good news though is that it has Christmas/New Years to look forward to.......and judging by the boost last year......it still has a great shot at $20m....

.....which should be enough to crack the $900m barrier Worldwide.

Thanks, 900m is a lot.

International Weekend December 17-19:

"Ocean's Twelve" ended the three-week reign of "The Incredibles" at the foreign box office over the weekend, pulling in an estimated $29 million from 27 countries.

"The Incredibles"
was right behind with an estimated total of $27.2 million, taking its foreign haul to about $190 million.

The foreign tally for "Ocean's Twelve's" is estimated at more than $35 million. It opened at No. 1 in France ($7.5 million), Germany ($5.3 million) and Italy ($2.4 million), and also topped the charts in Spain and the Netherlands. It held its No. 1 ranking in Australia with $1.7 million in Week 2.

"The Incredibles" opened at No. 1 in Mexico with an estimated $3.7 million, and in South Korea with $1.7 million, figures that were on a par with the openings of "Finding Nemo." In the United Kingdom, it was edged out from three weeks at the top by "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" ($4.2 million), but still notched up $3.2 million.

North American champ "Snicket" racked up a handy $6.2 million from four territories, also taking in $1.6 million in Australia, $250,000 in New Zealand and $180,000 in Portugal.

"The Polar Express"
grossed about $10.5 million, giving the fantasy film an estimated foreign total of about $63.5 million.

"Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason"
grossed an estimated $8.6 million from 31 territories. After 39 days, its estimated international box office stands at $154 million, including $63 million from the U.K.

"National Treasure" another holiday crowd-pleaser, grossed an estimated $5.6 million during the weekend, giving it a $43 million total. Weekend tallies included Italy with $1.8 million, Spain with $1 million, and Germany with $850,000 -- taking its Teutonic total to more than $12 million in a month.

ITALY: Opening Weekend

Slight uptick from estimates......and if you take into consideration the fact that it had to take on 2 big locals (Tu la conosci Claudia? = $3.9m, and Christmas in love with $2.9m) and Ocean's Twelve ($2.2m)....on any other weekend, it could easily make $6m methinks.

Last year, movies like Il Paridso and Natale in India opened around this time with weaker numbers than Shrek 2.....but the Christmas/NYs legs kicked them above $30m. The same could happen to Shrek 2, that's why i was predicting right from the beginning that this could be a $40m contender.

The Passion Of The Christ - $11.5m-$12m (5-Day or ~$9m 3-Day - 553 TC) + $1.3m Easter Monday (€9,957,537 6-Day/ €8,014,587 3-Day)

FULL INTERNATIONAL WEEKEND REPORT DECEMBER 17-19

Ocean's Twelve had terrific starts in all of its 22 new markets, which helped the picture amass $28.9 million over the weekend from 3,891 screens in 27 countries for a $35.2 million total.

Twelve was stunning in France, grossing an enormous $7.5 million (€5.7 million) from 719 screens, which easily a first place finish. As big as it was it was still 16% below Ocean's Eleven in Euros, but thanks to the exchange rate it was 28% ahead in Dollars. Twelve's opening was also 44% bigger than Catch Me if You Can. Germany's $5.3 million (€4 million) from 810 prints also ranked first. That opening was 29% below Eleven in Euros and 6% better in Dollars.

Ocean's Twelve grossed an excellent $2.2 million (€1.7 million) in Italy from 425 screens, which was especially good since it opened during the Italian soccer championships. It was 18% better than Eleven in Euros and 74% bigger in Dollars. Spain recorded a strong No. 1 finish of $3.5 million (€2.6 million) from 425 prints. Compared to its predecessor it was 15% below in Euros and 27% ahead in Dollars.

In the Netherlands the caper scored $1.365 million (€1.025 million) from 135 prints topping Eleven by 27% in Euros and 90% better in Dollars. Switzerland was also stellar with a first-place gross of $1.4 million (Franc 1.4 million) from 112 screens. Sweden supplied another pole position start thanks to a $990,000 weekend gross from 95 prints, which was 8% worse than Eleven in Euros and 43% better in Dollars. Hong Kong was also No. 1 with a $491,600 gross from 44 prints, which was 8% better than its predecessor in Euros and 8.5% in Dollars.

Eleven also opened No. 1 in the following markets:
Norway - $547,700
Israel - $413,300
Singapore - $370,800
Finland - $302,000
Iceland - $66,400

In its second weekend in Australia the sequel remained No. 1 despite the opening of Lemony Snicket, grossing $1.785 million (AU$2.308 million) from 378 prints for a $6.738 million (AU$8.7 million ) total. However, it was off 49% from its opening.

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events had mix reception across the globe last weekend. In the U.K. it was phenomenal with a $4,276,472 debut from 452 screens, but in Australia it was average with a $1,556,200 start from only 222 screens. It was also average in New Zealand with a $245,049 opening from 50 screens. In a very bad sign Lemony wasn't impressive at all in its first non-English market. Portugal supplied a $132,109 gross from 50 screens.

England's opening was just below Sleepy Hollow's and Ice Age's openings, but ahead of Cheaper by the Dozen and The Cat in the Hat. With even moderate holds its can't gross north of $15 million, which would equate to almost $75 million at the American box office. If it holds very well it could shoot past $20 million, which would about $100 million domestically. Snicket's British debut was by far its best start in the international marketplace and should equate to a sizeable sum in the end.

The lack of a high screen count in Australia is concerning. The books did not perform as well overseas as in the U.S., which might be the reason, but 222 screens is very low. Australia will have a tough time finishing with more than $7 million.

The Incredibles added $26.7 million from 7,000 prints in 37 markets for a $189.5 million total. The picture had two first place bows over the weekend in Mexico ($3.5 million on 680) and South Korea ($1.8 million on 221).

The superhero saga held well in most markets. Germany was off 34% to $3.8 million for an $11 million total. France fell 10% to $3.9 million for a $26.8 million total. Japan abated 32% banking $20.1 million in three weeks.

The Polar Express
continues to be the little engine that could, grossing $11.3 million over the weekend from 5,700 prints for a $64.2 million total.

In the U.K. the Robert Zemekis family feature grossed $2.283 million (£1.2 million), which was a drop of only 8%. That pushed its two-week total to $7.807 million (£4.027 million). Express was off only 13% in Argentina for a $388,000 total after a $136,000 weekend take.

In France the Tom Hanks headliner grew 19% in its third weekend for a $6 million (€4.5 million) total. Germany fell 19% for a $7.238 million (€5.5 million) total. Japan was off 22% for a $7.1 million (¥730.7 million) total. In its fourth weekend in Mexico Express remained in second place and pushed its total to $3.4 million.

Australia has been mimicking Express' domestic performance ever since its opening five weeks ago. Its weekend gross was 4% bigger than last week for a $4.9 million (AU$6.363 million) total. Just like in the U.S. The Polar Express passed National Treasure's total of $4.4 million.

Shrek 2's long-awaited opening in Italy was very impressive. The picture grossed $4,236,516 from 300 screens, which tops Brother Bear by 56%, Toy Story 2 by 100%, and Ice Age by 147%. It was easily better than the original Shrek as well, but couldn't quite equate to Finding Nemo's $6.6 million although that was a 5-day opening. For sure it was not as good as any of the Harry Potter's, which all grossed north of $5.3 million, but other than that it was one of the biggest family movie openings ever. It seems UIP's seven-month delay has paid big dividends. It should have strong legs going into the Christmas season. Shrek 2 pushed its international total to $452.1 million nearing The Lion King's 12-highest $455.3 million total.

The Terminal finally opened in Japan last weekend an was also impressive. The dramedy grossed $3,758,997 from just 274 screens. That didn't quite match Catch Me If You Can's $4,231,150 start, but then again very few of its international markets did. The Terminal quietly crossed the century mark in international receipts as well with a $103.4 million total. The Terminal's success depended mainly on start power with superstar Tom Hanks taking the leading role and uber-director Steven Spielberg helming. The picture had great openings, fell sharply in its second weekend, but then turned in solid holds in later weeks in most markets. Its Eastern European tone didn't turn on Eastern European audiences, which was surprising. Its Russian total was only $1,527,186. That possibly shows that that audience really favors strong action/adventure titles and that American comedies and drama can't really produce much box office.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason had an excellent weekend, grossing $11,087,547 at 3,733 dates in 31 territories last weekend pushing its total $153,856,253. The worldwide total will pass $200 million this week. There are 12 more territories to open including Italy on January 7.

Bridget was No. 3 in its third week in Germany behind the opening of Ocean's Twelve and week 2 of The Incredibles. Bridget's weekend gross was $1,891,928 at 740 dates, off 31% for an 18-day total is $11,309,199, which is 21% ahead of Bridget Jones's Diary in US$ and 10% ahead in Euros. France's 12-day total moved up to $8,868,787.

Bridget just passed the final total of Love Actually in US$ ($62,671,632) thanks to a weekend gross of $998,425 (£518k) at 350 dates, off 40%. It was No. 6 and pushed its total to 62,856,400 (£33.7 million)

In Spain, Bridget was No. 8 in its fifth week with $340,113 at 260 dates, off 56%. The 31-day total is $9,376,013 and it is 50% ahead of Diary in US$. It just passed the final total of Love Actually in US$.

Bridget moved into its second weekend in South Korea, grossing $1,571,894 at 156 dates, off 35%. The 11-day total is an impressive $5,007,789. It held at No. 2 behind week 2 of The Phantom of the Opera.

The Edge of Reason did have two openings last weekend. In Thailand it grossed a surprisingly potent $233,068 from 35 screens. That joins Hong Kong ($818,440 total) and Singapore ($473,243) as surprising runs in Southeast Asia, an area where romantic comedies don't excel. Bridget also opened in Greece, grossing $275,924 from 38 screens, a solid start considering Diary's poor performance there.

The Phantom of the Opera eased well in the U.K. and South Korea, but had poor starts in continental Europe. In the U.K. the musical fell just 23% for $6.1 million in 10 days and in South Korea it was $4.1 million in the same frame. It was one failure after another in continental Europe ever including Germany's $885,000 from 430 screens, Spain's $751,000 from 253, and Italy's $199,000 on 133.

National Treasure's $4.9 million weekend was highlighted by Taiwan's $1 million from 20 screens, marking a personal best for Nicolas Cage. Thanks mainly to Italy's $6.5 million in 10 days and Spain's $10.2 million 17 the picture has $42 million already in the till.

Alien vs. Predator opened in its final market last weekend. In Japan AVP grossed a swell $2.9 million from 380 screens, ranking fourth. That put its total at $77.1 million, which means it will pass the domestic tally of $80.3 million. It should wind up with about $85 million. AVP had international success thanks to a massive turnout in Asia and decent returns in Europe.

Coming off its surprising openings in five markets last weekend Blade: Trinity returned back to Earth with very large drops. It was worst in Singapore with a 65% fall for a $425,809 total. However, it only needs $18,306 more to pass Blade II to top both Blade's totals. France was off 54% for a $3,278,723 total. The U.K. fell 49% to $1,845,690 from 453 screens for an $8,621,623 total. Overall Trinity grossed $3,364,924 from 1,130 screens in six markets for a $13,807,698 total.

Garfield: The Movie also opened in its last territory in China, grossing a mediocre $384,000 from 175 screens. Its total moved to $120.2 million, which greatly outdoes the domestic total of $75.4 million.

Thanks for posting these Arch! Overall, I think O12 won't be able to math the original overseas.

Shrek 2, woo hoo, good numbers!!!!!!! :D

Why does Shrek 2's success have to come at the expense of Finding Nemo?

I don't understand how this works. Finding Nemo made a profit of somewhere between $750m and $1B for Disney/Pixar, if not more. The Lion King and Shrek 2 are the only other 2 films that could possible be considered within that realm, yet Nemo should find itself turning in the grave?

As a sidenote, Nemo did make $525m overseas. Not that anyone cares.

Who cares whether I am or not. My point still stands. One film's success does not need to come at the expense of another's.

But you still are ;)

Finding Nemo was a huge, undeniable and surprising success.

It's just that Shrek was a bigger, more undeniable and more surrising success.

Oh and I haven't seen either.

Yes, but although Shrek 2 will earn DW $930m+, Nemo still earned Disney $750m+.

These are tremendous successes, and its possible that Nemo actually ended up with a bigger profit than ROTK, because of merchandise and humongous DVD sales.

And Shrek 2 actually is closer to ROTK in revenues received by distributors than it might seem, because, unlike in the US/Canada, overseas distributor share is only around 40% vs. 50% domestic.

For Shrek 2, that means rentals of $220m domestically, and $190m overseas, for a total of $410M.

ROTK's domestic was $188.5m and $296m, so around $484.5m.

So, although the box office difference is well over $200m, in terms of actual revenues, it's slithgly less than $75m. DVD-wise, Shrek 2 will probably blow ROTK out of the waters, no matter how many EE are released.

So we've actually got an instance where 2 CGIs might have made more than the second biggest film of all time...

P.S., Titanic is the biggest money-earner ever, with $3.2B in revenues and possibly $2B+ in profits. The Lion King earned Disney well over $1B, probably $1.5B, and Jurassic Park might have been the first film to rake in $1B for a studio, assuming Star Wars '77 didn't already make that much in box office revenues and merchandise over a 15 year period up to that point.

Looks like a pretty big weekend for The Polar Express. I am sure it can pull off a $10+ million international weekend.

Ocean's Twelve will remain #1 internationally, though. I see a $20+ million wekend.

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events should be able to get $10+ million this weekend as well.
