Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals (05/28-29)
(C)2016 Disney. All Rights Reserved.Weekend Actuals (05/28-29)/2016年05月28日-2016年05月29日01 (01) ¥438,671,300 ($4.0 million), -13%, ¥5,329,755,500 ($49.5 million), Zootopia (Disney) WK6 02 (---) ¥233,626,300 ($2.1 million), 0, ¥233,626,300 ($2.1 million), Wolf Girl and Black Prince (Warner Bros.) NEW 03 (---) ¥115,627,700 ($1.1 million), 0, ¥150,476,325 ($1.4 million), The Huntsman: Winter's War (Toho-Towa) NEW 04 (02) ¥112,113,900 ($1.0 million), -21%, ¥772,755,500 ($7.1 million), If Cats Disappeared from the World (Toho) WK3 05 (03) ¥101,000,100 ($917,000), -25%, ¥874,865,500 ($8.0 million), The Magnificent Nine (Shochiku) WK3 06 (04) ¥95,786,700 ($869,000), -26%, ¥5,887,742,000 ($54.2 million), Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare (Toho) WK7 07 (05) ¥88,992,100 ($807,000), -23%, ¥1,224,596,800 ($11.5 million), 64: Part 1 (Toho) WK4 08 (06) ¥67,243,000 ($610,000), -38%, ¥343,940,300 ($3.1 million), After the Storm (Gaga) WK2 09 (07) ¥62,878,600 ($571,000), -32%, ¥2,515,117,700 ($23.3 million), Captain America: Civil War (Disney) WK5 10 (08) ¥51,191,000 ($464,000), -15%, ¥1,937,281,800 ($18.1 million), Crayon Shin-chan: Assault on the Dreaming World (Toho) WK7Zootopia scores a fourth-consecutive weekend atop the box office in its sixth week in release; delivering yet another stellar figure (even if it dropped, this is only its second weekend drop so far) by selling a further 324,549 admissions in its sixth weekend. After six weeks in release, Disney's latest blockbuster has exceeded 4.1 million admissions and has more than plenty left to drive that number significantly higher in the coming weeks/months.
It's certainly still on course to eventually exceed the ¥8 billion ($70 million+) milestone with well over 6 million admissions as it then begins to approach a multiplier of 20.
Wolf Girl and Black Prince comes in second place, delivering a sold opening weekend by selling 192,506 admissions across 285 screens over the weekend. Director Hiroki Ryuichi's latest live-action shojo adaptation earned itself a pretty standard debut in the genre, and with the expected good legs the genre is also known for, a gross between ¥1.5-2.0 billion ($15-20 million) is likely.
The Huntsman: Winter's War managed to earn itself a Top 3 debut afterall by edging out If Cats Disappeared from the World, but only sold 87,958 admissions on 587 screens over the weekend frame. Its opening weekend is down a severe 62% compared to the debut of the original film from four years ago, and since it's probably going to have worse legs, a total of ¥600 million ($5-6 million) is the best it can hope for.
Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare continues to hold on quite well compared to previous entries in the series, and is coming closer and closer to exceeding the ¥6 billion ($55 million) milestone, which it will sometime next weekend. The 20th anniversary release should eventually finish with ~¥6.3 billion ($58 million) and very close to 5 million admissions (Toho will probably make sure it reaches that admissions mark).
Captain America: Civil War is also holding on fairly well and will end up with better legs than every modern non-Spider-Man superhero film, as well as the first Avengers film. It's going to surpass Iron Man 3's ¥2.57 billion total next week, too, which will make it the highest-grossing (you guessed it!) modern non-Spider-Man/Avengers superhero film in Japan. The third entry in the Captain America series will finish with ~¥2.7 billion ($25 million) and 1.8 million admissions (a substantial ~380-400% increase over the last film).

I am wondering of the same thing. Why did they cancel Bleach so soon? I heard they even stopped doing the manga as well.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2016 Charts Updating
Bleach was quite big in the mid/late-2000s, but its popularity has since seen gradual declines every year. In the states moreso than in Japan, I feel. I rarely see any Bleach cosplayers anymore here.
The manga is still ongoing (Volume 72 was released a few weeks ago), and sales remain pretty decent. Each individual volume still sells near 500,000 copies, and while that's down significantly from the series peak and isn't good enough to even rank on the yearly Top 20 charts or anything, it's still respectable numbers.
As for the anime - ratings just dropped way too low and DVD sales were dismal. At least they ended it with the Aizen arc, rather than shortly after starting the next arc.

Deadpool finally opened in Japan yesterday (rare Wednesday opener), and performed very well. I'll post an estimate shortly.

Re: Japan Box Office: Deadpool Satisfies Moviegoers on First
Opening Day Estimate for Deadpool: ¥150-175 million ($1.4-1.6 million) / 125,000-135,000 admissions Very good. There aren't any comparisons to use given the Wednesday release, but the figure alone is almost on par with the standard opening weekend for a superhero film in Japan. It's hard to predict what this first day means for the weekend frame (no comparisons, and Wednesday openings are very rare anyway), but I'd say it's a great sign for a potential mini-breakout performance. It'll also help that reviews are quite strong, too.

Are there any comparisons in terms of R-rated superhero/comedy films doing well in Japan?

Damn!! Completely forgot that this was coming out. Japan should tip this over GoTG WW total and might even give it the boost to take over SW original unadjusted numbers.

I can't think of any R-rated Japanese comedies that have performed well at the box office. I don't actually know of any R-rated Japanese comedies... I'm sure they exist, but if they're released, they're limited releases only. The only R-rated superhero/comedy films I know of are the HK: Hentai Kamen films. They've only seen limited releases. Comedy is one of the weakest film genres in Japan. Japan releases their own comedy films (period comedies are released frequently, and generally comedic elements are found in most films) that do fair business, but very few actual comedies become hits. And imported comedies seldom leave limited release, if they're released theatrically at all (cultural differences/barriers).

Re: Japan Box Office: Usual Locations Seats/Shows (WKND Prev
Alright, so I just finished typing up the Saturday Admissions from the Usual Locations (Two-Thirds of the Market) list that I post each week a couple minutes ago, and in the process of submitting it, some error occurred and I lost it ...
Anyway, there's a very close race for the #1 spot this weekend between newcomers Evergreen Love and Deadpool, and Zootopia (now in its seventh weekend). Evergreen Love won Saturday in terms of admissions (84,897), thanks to very robust stage greeting ticket sales. Deadpool ranked a strong second place (76,107), followed by Zootopia falling to third (61,969), down just 19%.
Evergreen Love will likely see a sharp decline on Sunday without the stage greeting benefit (they accounted for ~1/3 of its Saturday ticket sales), and since its avg. ticket price will be pretty low, it may not win the weekend even with the Saturday advantage.
Deadpool opened earlier in the week (Wednesday), so its Sunday should be unaffected. And since it carries an R15+ rating, its avg. ticket price will be high. I think it might edge out the weekend victory, and if it does, it'll be the first superhero film to win a weekend since Avengers: Age of Ultron. It's also worth mentioning that its Saturday was quite strong, especially for a superhero film. Compared to Captain America: Civil War, it trailed just 12%, and it was pretty much on par with Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, trailing it by a mere 1%.
Zootopia has been enjoying significant Sunday increases every week, and tomorrow shouldn't be any different. So with another strong Sunday, it can certainly comeback from a third place ranking on Saturday to win the weekend and its fifth-consecutive overall.

Re: Japan Box Office: Evergreen/Deadpool Aim to Usurp Zootop
Sorry for the lack of updates this weekend, specially since it's the most interesting weekend until July. I've been quite busy all week. But here's a quick update:
Here are the weekend admissions from the usual locations (two-thirds of market) for the Top 3:
159,186 (---), Evergreen Love (NEW) 154,202 (-17%), Zootopia (Week 7) 150,262 (---), Deadpool (NEW)
A very, very tight race. All three films likely sold between 240,000-260,000 admissions. It's really a toss-up on which film will come out on top, and the weekend will probably have one film win in admissions, and another in terms of gross. However, if that R15+ rating for Deadpool boosts its avg. ticket price as expected, I'm leaning toward it winning the weekend in terms of gross and dethroning Zootopia.
A total north of $20 million is possible for Deadpool, based on estimates, so it's going to get quite close to $800 million worldwide.

Re: Japan Box Office: Evergreen/Deadpool Aim to Usurp Zootop
The Top 3 films ended up coming in even closer than anticipated, with the #1 position being decided by only 504 admissions (0.19%). Also, one film came out on top in admissions, while another came out on top in gross. Did Zootopia finally get dethroned?
Weekend Actuals will be posted soon.

And, of all things, it's DEADPOOL.
Deadpool accomplishment a few achievements this weekend: First, it's the first superhero film to open at #1 since Avengers: Age of Ultron from 11 months ago; Second, it managed to dethrone Zootopia from its long reign atop the box office; And third, it's the first R15+ rated film to open at #1 since Ted from, get ready for it, January 2013.
Marvel's hyper-violent superhero sold 248,473 admissions over the weekend on 724 screens, but that was "only" good enough to rank third place over the weekend in terms of admissions. Regardless, it achieves the #1 ranking in terms of gross thanks to its high avg. ticket price, and accomplished quite a lot in the process. It hasn't really shown any early signs of noticable frontloading, so a total between ¥2-2.5 billion ($20-25 million) looks very good right now, which will be more than enough to outgross every X-Men film in the market (Apocalypse won't be a contender later this year).
Zootopia finally falls from its perch atop the box office, but still held very, very well, and posted another excellent weekend. Over its seventh weekend in release, Disney's latest blockbuster sold 263,766 admissions, bring its seven week admissions total above 4.6 million. It should begin to shred some seating/showtimes in larger numbers beginning next week, but it likely still has a lot left in the tank, and is still on course to exceed ¥8 billion ($70 million+) and 6 million admissions (for an insane multiplier of at least 18).
Evergreen Love may have had to settle for a third place debut, but it does achieve the weekend victory in terms of admissions by selling the most tickets over the weekend with 264,270 across 307 screens. Its avg. ticket price was just too low for it to come out on top in terms of gross, though. This debut is quite good, and the best that Shochiku has had since Love Live! opened almost exactly a year ago. If its stage greetings over the weekend don't impact its legs too much, then a total of ¥2 billion ($20 million) is certainly attainable.
The Kodai Family debuts in a distant, and disappointing, fifth place over the weekend, selling just 75,976 admissions across 308 screens. There's little to discuss concerning this debut; it's simply very poor.
