Re: Mulan Will Win 2020 (Worldwide): The Club
It looks generic as hell, like a carbon copy of thousands of Chinese period action movies already made. The dialogue in English gives a very unnatural feel. Disney wants to play it safe, and this time with the backing of an authoritarian state.

I'm pretty sure the PRC has been heavily involved at the invitation of Disney since the pre-production stage and has already given the screenplay and the finished movie the stamp of approval.

It’s very risky to think audiences will just come to this without these. It's not unlike the live-action Aladdin with the grandeur of scenery and action sequences. Like Aladdin, Mulan is also suited for live action. In fact, it's been done multiple times in foreign films and tv series.

In fact, it's been done multiple times in foreign films and tv series. Aladdin kept the songs and the genie. It’s a huge difference. “I’ll Make A Man Out of You” is a Disney Classic (they included the line in the trailer for a reason). The majority of casual audiences would have liked that song kept in along with the dragon. Mulan keeps "Reflection" on the soundtrack. The songs of the animated version were not as popular as those in Aladdin. And its box office was not top-tier Disney. It gave Disney room to wiggle and go Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon/Great Wall 2.0.

I'll Make a Man Out of You is a Top 5 Disney song. I really wish they would've done something to keep it in there.

Re: Mulan Will Win 2020 (Worldwide): The Club
I think this skews older so it wont grab the kids as much as the other remakes but a solid $225-$275m is on the cards.
That would be great as this comes off more as Disney's Last Samurai/47 Ronin/historical epic as opposed to a fun romp for all ages.

Re: Mulan Will Win 2020 (Worldwide): The Club
I really enjoyed that new trailer, but man does the girl playing Mulan seem flat as can be. Having Jet Li, Donnie Yen and Gong Li in it is more than enough to get my attention though, and I definitely got some Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon vibes from it which is also a plus. I would not be surprised if it really cleaned up WW and did something crazy like $1.1 or $1.2B, but $250-$300M still seems like the best outcome for it here in the States.

I think this has potential to finish around Aladdin's total if it's well received. Hype will get it over 100m for OW.
China gross is probably gonna be nuts.

Re: Mulan Will Win 2020 (Worldwide): The Club
... welp, with the whole coronavirus affecting China I think it dims this a possibility. But this last trailer is strong. I think this will clear 300m domestic easily, how high though idk.
I think #1 domestic of the year will be between this, WW and Black Widow.

Re: Mulan Will Win 2020 (Worldwide): The Club
Is there really any point in dropping another $100M in marketing when its just gonna flop on opening weekend anyways? Would be better to spread it out, keep the ads running throughout August. This way they can save advertising money and get it out on VOD relatively quickly without upsetting the theater companies.

Bad Boys For Life FTW even worldwide. Actually very appropriate movie to win the year given the current US climate.

Re: Mulan Will Win 2020 (Worldwide): The Club
Disneyland California is officially postponed to the unknown date, and Mulan is likely to be postponed too. From Deadline, sources say that when Warner Bros moved Tenet to July 31 from July 17, they automatically made Mulan the event movie to kick off the summer season. “Disney doesn’t like that,” says an exhibition source. “What studio wants to automatically be put in that position?”

Re: Mulan Will Win 2020 (Worldwide): The Club
Trying not to be pessimistic here, but with things worsening in California, Texas and Florida, among other states, I wouldn't anticipate seeing Mulan or Tenet in U.S. theaters for a while longer.

I agree. The movie definately needs to move to next summer. Not just the Coronavirus but its US potential is shot because of the anti-chinese feeling going around America. Maybe with a less divisive president, the feelings would go away

Lol. There is really no need to push these movies just a few weeks. They should just move them to fall schedule.

Is anyone still hyped for this or Wonder Woman 2? I know they have to try to maximize profits for shareholders but I honestly think they're going to end up losing money by not going VOD with the original release dates

Love how Disney doesn't hide the intention of using Tenet as testbed blockbuster.
