And I can see it being a massive drop off from Maverick due to the Animal Crossing effect not being in play

Yeah expecting this film to do over $300m+ was weird when a MI had never grossed over $230m... lol Top Gun did so well because it was a very good film that appealed to people that almost never go to the theater.

That said I think it should have some staying power.. hopefully. It's a strong choice with spillover from the 2 big films next weekend.

The first 2 both adjust to over/under 400m

I remember the opening for Ghost Protocol also felt underwhelming, but that turned out to do very well, so I'm not worried. The market will get over the hump of Barbie and Oppenheimer, and then it will show its staying power. Legginess is a particular feature of 2023, I feel.

I don't think $15M is bad at all. It will leg out.

It is kind of like Rogue Nation where everyone expected it get a huge boost from Ghost Protocol, but it ended up with a weak opening and great legs. I guess history repeats itself and it didn't matter how amazing Fallout was or how big Maverick was, the series has a limit on what it can do. War will always be a more bankable genre than Spy.

I mean, MI has never been about huge openings. Why should we expect one now in the last movie?

Um, Sound of Freedom is up +9.3% with $4,424,714. If it follows that into the weekend it could pull a 3day tally of $21.53M.

Can this make a run for $200M?! Could be at $79M by the end of its second weekend. :whaa:

Yes looks like an all timer in terms of BO performance. Even if it finishes with $150m-ish - kind of a AS/F911 phenom.

Charlie is saying 8.2m thursday. Good hold and 3 day will squeeze through 50m I think. Not sure with Barbenheimer coming up next weekend taking away all PLF screens will dent its legs though I am expecting it to hold well beyond that.

Now we can see why Cruise was perturbed by Barbie opening so soon after M:I.

Transformers to pass $150m domestic and has $400m WW. Not really great financially but that's probably enough for Paramount to make another one soon.

Probably the day they're adding Sun/Mon previews to.

RTH is saying 14.5m. but it's possible early bo gets added. Which would mean weaker sat increase.

That might explain why Deadline's early estimate was $16M. God, carrying Sunday/Monday previews over to the Friday numbers while still leaving the Tuesday previews in the Wednesday figure would be one of the most bogus box office reporting moves I have ever witnessed.

Bogue box office is the new style I guess. Come on, Tommy, you should be better than Kooky Cavizel.

So all told, looks like the opening would have been 65ish had it opened on Friday. So it’s over under the inflation adjusted performance of Fallout, so it’s not terrible, but nothing too impressive

What?

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE had the 5th biggest opening weekend and the 3rd biggest opening week of all-time (just behind INDEPENDENCE DAY and JURASSIC PARK)

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE II had the 3rd biggest opening weekend (just behind THE LOST WORLD and THE PHANTOM MENACE) and the 5th biggest opening week of all-time

Bad drop for Indy, guess it makes sense since it and MI appeal to similar demographics... I think Mission Impossible was better off releasing somewhere empty as opposed to summer.

Go Elemental though.

It’s Sunday drop will be much better than last Sunday where it came off a holiday, so it shouldn’t be that far a drop over 50.

Still can get to an over/under 3x multiple but not much more

I love these kinds of posts with the throwback information, always feels like a bit of a time machine. Summer 2000 was when I really started following Box Office, so I remember M:I 2’s performance well.
