Wait not a 75% drop oh my :death: Is that the worst ever for a major blockbuster?? I don’t remember a bigger drop. So WOM is clearly toxic or the only people who saw it OW are DC diehards and the rest of the public has no interest.

I think DC has become an anime like niche. It has a strong voice amongst the internet elite to make it seem more popular than it is

Eh, it's more the DCEU specifically. Joker and The Batman were bonafide blockbusters, while with the EU the only film to crack $100M in the last four years has been Black Adam and now The Flash...maybe. Probably, but if the 75% drop happens who knows. Regardless, the success of those two should really have encouraged DC to give on the cinematic universe nonsense and just let filmmakers with interesting visions be allowed to do their own contained thing. A James Gunn Superman film would be on its own very exciting, but if it's suppose to be interconnected with other stuff, then my interest starts to decline.

Looks like Guardians is gonna pass a 3x multiplier. Pretty impressive considering Quantumania barely had a 2x multiplier.

WOM appears to spread almost instantly these days. It reaches a large enough number of people to begin having an effect after opening day (even after previews on Thursday), so audience reception has become more important than ever since it'll have an impact on grosses so early. Makes sense with social media, of course, but seeing it pretty much immediately impact movies (good or bad) at the box office now is interesting.

Studios won't be able to rely as much on opening weekends/first weeks still being big regardless of quality like they did in the past. On the other hand, like we've seen with Guardians, well-received films could end up being a bit leggier than in the past too.

A 3.0 used to be the bare minimum. Is that now impressive in 2023?

A 3x multiplier is very good for a film opening over 100m in general.

Everything apart from The Flash is dropping so well. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is only 39% down from last Friday, another $3.2m in the bank, and heading towards $130-135m. Elemental is 52% down but take out previews and it's less. It looks like The Flash is going to struggle to do $15m this weekend. Just eeking over the century mark when all is said and done - what an embarrassment!

The Boogeyman is so going over $40m, probably ending with, like, $42m or so. Great result for a $12.3m opener. I'm glad it was able to leg out a nice total because when it opened it was underwhelming - I expected high teens.

Post Re: 6/23 weekend thread
I can't recall the last time we had 4 different #1 movies in 4 consecutive days? MI should have done previews this Sat so it could have been #1 then to keep the streak going to 5!

Looking at these numbers, the big winner for me is Transformers. It's clearly been well received but it's release date likely culled what could have been a $200M+ movie. OW subdued due to proximity to Spider-verse. Weekend 2 subdued by openers. So nice to see how well it's stabilized this weekend when given breathing room. Think this continues the turnaround for the franchise and as more people rediscover it after getting burned by bad Transformers movies feel like the box office grosses could keep going up for it to eventually get towards $250M again.

Spider-verse clearly is everyone's favorite for the month with a nearly $200M+ gross difference (also known as 2 Flashes :funny: ). Take it out and this month was a mess. It's looking good for a 3X multiplier as well. It could be at about $329M by the end of next Thursday going into its 5th weekend with a 5day weekend and where it may still be in the top 3 so if it gets enough of a boost may have enough momentum to push to $400M though $375M feels more realistic.

This would've been a good weekend to open Transformers.

No Hard Feelings isn't really a hit unless it musters big legs but the only reason it's opening in the teens is Jennifer Lawrence so there's that. Idk who else could've opened the movie to the same numbers.

So with Spider-Man looking to regain the top spot this weekend it will end the six week spell where we had a different #1 each week.

Sandra Bullock probably could have pulled it to a $25M+ opening in a Hitch like movie.

I read Lawrence got paid $25M for it though and it's budget was $45M so definitely don't think the studio should have spent that much as this genre has struggled a lot over the past few years.

I saw recently she expressed an interest in going back to the Hunger Games franchise. I can start to see why. Post Hunger Games box office below for major releases:

Jun 23, 2023 No Hard Feelings $16M OW
Jun 7, 2019 Dark Phoenix $65,845,974
Mar 2, 2018 Red Sparrow $46,874,505
Sep 15, 2017 mother! $17,800,004
Dec 21, 2016 Passengers $100,014,699
May 27, 2016 X-Men: Apocalypse $155,442,489
Dec 25, 2015 Joy $56,451,232

Most of her movies have done under $70M and the two that made more were universally despised (with Apocalypse stopping the X-men franchise in its tracks). She must have an amazing agent. Though she does produce NHF so could have gotten a fee there too. $25M looking at her recent box office track record feels a bit mindboggling though.

Respectable for No Hard Feelings but it needed to cost less, I can't see how they ever could have expected it to open higher than this

The Flash... RIP

WB should wait atleast 5 years for Gunn's DCU to start coming out.

It's a bit mindboggling how you even spend $45 million dollars on an R-rated comedy. Even $20 million dollars seems way too much if we deduct Jennifer's salary. Horrors can do a job for a few mil and still make, like, 6x their budget.

Maybe $10M in Covid protocols? Feels like that is at least 20-30% of these elevate budgets we've been seeing. Fast and the Furious' original budget was $38M in 2001. IJ was $20M in 1981. MI1 was $80M in 1996. Crazy to see those franchises now have films at $340M, $295M and $290M respectably.

NHF might end up falling short of the 2.5 times budget rule, but with it being a streaming asset it can come out as a slight positive. It's not a situation like Renfield with 65 million budget and 17 dom/26 WW total.
