D&D is way more mainstream than... 5-10 years ago, so that should be an advantage a film released today wouldn't have had in the past. A film released probably any year before now would had almost certainly have bombed hard.

The question though is how far has it reached into the mainstream, because, I hope I'm wrong, I don't think too many moviegoers outside of that will be interested in it to help propel it above, let's say, a sort of $25/75m kind of performance or a little more. It's sandwiched between quite a number of notable films, could be tough winning the "what do you want to see?" battle between casual moviegoers.

Hoping it all the success it can manage though. $100 million would be a nice little surprise.

It's not mainstream at all from where I'm standing. This will be riding on its cast and fantasy adventure concept alone in my opinion. Having a recognizable brand name can't hurt, but it isn't going to get people out to the cinema either. Still down for $40 million domestic.

D&D is generally considered to be the nerdiest of all nerd things. Which is kinda weird since it requires a social gathering in order to happen (you damn kids should be drinking instead!) but that is the reputation the words have. Not sure any amount of great reviews will shed that label, but they sure are generating interest among those who otherwise wouldn't care about this movie at all.

D&D is not just for nerds anymore and hasn't been for a while. And being nerdy has been cool for a while too. If Marvel can send the corniest Z list superheroes to $100M+ openings then we're not in a nerdy=uncool world anymore.

I feel like D&D in a best case could open to a Dune like level. Dune wasn't exactly mainstream either so there's always a chance to expand outside of just the fanbase.

It also has such an uncool cast. Fresh or not, it's not going to do well. It's just more fantasy nonsense that you get ten to a penny on Netflix et al.

That is a lock. it has had great reviews and has 4 days of early shows setting up its OW. Plus D&D has its fan base who will come. 40m+ OW is likely at this point and I actually thought this could bomb before reviews and easly presales.

Saw this today. Idk I kinda thought it'd be better based on buzz but it's entertaining so ya sure if this does well.

This doesn't do it for me but It will probably do better than expected. $40m OW is possible.

I had also been assuming for a while that this would bomb just because I got kinda use to dismissing this kind of fantasy movie as an automatic bomb or non-event because we had so many Lord of the Rings/Harry Potter imitators come and go in the wake of those movies that this felt like those kind of movies. However, looking at the recent highest-grossers lists, it's been a while since we had a genuine big-budget fantasy like this in theaters, so I do wonder if there is a mainstream interest that this is tapping into. The trailer has played well at the last couple of movies I saw.

Also, release date is actually starting to look like a good one. Coming after four straight weeks of major sequels at first looked not good, but if it opens well then it has a holiday week right after, and then after that April is pretty calm for three weeks, and almost all the major releases will be R-rated, so assuming WOM is strong it should hold pretty well.

I have never seen so many early public access screenings for a movie before. It’s preview to OD/OW multiple is gonna look terrible from how many previews it will actually include

Still TBD how much the audience expands for this. A lot of the presales will likely be driven by fans.

It's a smaller example but I remember the Final Fantasy movie in 2001 opened to $5M ($9.7M adjusted), made $19M in its first 5 days (adjusted now to $36.9M) then finished with a total of $32M ($62.2M adjusted).

The reviews and good response so far help but success outside of niche audience will depend on appealing to an average moviegoer outside the pre-sold audience who drive presales.

Down to 71 on meta with 27 reviews. Probably will end up in high 60s. But that first rush of good reviews was the best marketing the movie could have had so it should still do pretty well.

From general audience perspective RT is more relevant. It still has 90% rating with 123 reviews. At this point any further change wont have that much of an impact. Let us see how the walkups go starting tomorrow. Its looking like 35m OW for now.

I would say $50M+ if they had a more appealing cast. With this lot though I don't see a huge breakout despite the good reviews. Chris Pine feels washed up. Justice Smith is a charisma vacuum. Rege-Jean Page is not a real star yet. Michelle Rodriguez is one of those people you see pop up here and there but no one is watching a movie because of her. Sophia Lillis didn't really translate her It hype to a big following thus far. They don't look great together IMO. Maybe they work well in the movie, but from the poster it looks very mismatched.

A far cry from the likes of Pirates, the Mummy, LOTR, Guardians where the cast looked so dynamic together.

That would be very good. Almost on par with Uncharted . Would give it a shot at 40m

Wouldn't there be potential for its preview to be inflated?

Lol I just watched the trailer for the 2000 movie. Can’t believe that cost 45 million. Looks like it had the budget of a goosebumps episode.

5.6 is really good but hard to gauge with all the previews. With AntMan, Creed, Scream, John Wick, Super Mario and possibly DD, 6 100 million films pre summer is a great start to past last year 18 and total box office. Maybe even Air can surprise if it goes wide enough
