Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Biggest Weekends (15-21)
RRR has been added to the Biggest 15th-21st Weekends below.

I don't want to say it's "flown under the radar", since it's become the highest-grossing Indian film ever in Japan and has been in/out of the Top 10 ever since it opened back in October. (I need to go back and see how many of its 28 weekends so far have been in the Top 10 because I feel it's about half.) It's just that its numbers haven't been very high at any point in its run, so was a bit easy to miss (not realize) its weekends from 15 onward have been strong enough to rank on these charts now despite a total that is only a fraction of other films on the charts.

I'll do a single post with Weekends 22-28 for it in a bit.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Chart Updates; Golden Week Begins; Mar
The past couple of years have had many examples of films playing for longer in theaters, legs growing stronger and stronger. Films have always had long runs in theaters in Japan, but it wasn't as "common" as it's been in recent years.

From the biggest film of all-time (Demon Slayer) to a film like RRR still having a presence near or sometimes in the Top 10 after 7 months, more and more films are playing for 6-12 months. We're up to like a dozen, maybe more, highly notable runs like this since 2020. And they're not playing quietly out of theaters either, with many of them having their final couple weekends after 6+ months in release top some from months prior.

Japanese studios and theaters are all-in on the theatrical experience via giveaways, discounts, premium format expansions, farewell events by announcing the final day a film plays a month in advance, and all sorts of things. They showed their commitment to this when half the theaters in the country boycotted Hollywood films that went to streaming back in 2020/2021, and now they're taking it even further.

The "Longevity Records" (like X weeks in the Top 5/10, Biggest 15th-25th+ weekends, etc) are starting to get dominated near the top by films released since 2020.

Suzume and Jujutsu Kaisen 0's weekends have been added to all the charts above.

Super appreciated, Kanroji!

I'll try to do some Golden Week estimates for the Top 5. We got Monday numbers for Mario and Conan, so that's a good start, though it looks like United Cinemas bugged out again on Wednesday, so those estimates will be a bit rough.

UNITED was partially added which possibly makes estimating even harder LMAO. I'm thinking 800-850M range, TOHO numbers should be overindexing like crazy on wed with how little chains there are here.

I gave the films a slightly lower multiplier than the weekend to account for United being partially added vs not over the weekend frame, and then I shaved off 7.5% of the end result to account for sales skewing to Toho since it's a Wednesday.

Consider Wednesday rough estimates, but I don't think they'll be drastically off... hopefully. :funny:

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Fastest to 10 Billion
Detective Conan: The Black Iron Submarine is a little over a ¥1 billion away from becoming the highest grossing film in the franchise, and assuming it's around ~¥9.5 billion after Friday, then it'll achieve the franchise record on Saturday (not even quite four weeks!).

And while that's clearly impressive, even more so is that it's almost guaranteed to exceed ¥10 billion over the weekend as well, probably Sunday (Day 24) with a slight shot at doing so on Saturday (Day 23). Monday would be the latest and least likely scenario.

So, first film in the long-running franchise to reach ¥10 billion, and it's very likely to be the third fastest film to ever do it as well. Conan films usually slow down after Golden Week, but its numbers are quite high still and a slowdown is still going to add a good amount to its total.

Fastest Films to ¥10 billion (Uber-Blockbuster Milestone):

SLAM DUNK entered ¥10B later than TGM but still outgrossed it.

Doraemon did a great comeback. Corpse, what could Shin Chan 3D potentially do in August. I did ask yesterday but may be you missed out?

Slam Dunk was performing well in its first couple months and looked like it'd settle nicely around ¥11 billion, but these last couple months have been stellar and it's still in the middle of the top 10 five months later, and might be aiming for ¥15 billion.

I said a couple days ago that while it was going to outgross TGM and JJK0 (outgrossed the former on Wednesday, will outgross the latter today or tomorrow), it probably wasn't going to quite catch Suzume to take the #2 spot of 2022. Well... I'd say that's probably up to 50/50 now.

Crayon Shin-chan's first CGI film in August will be interesting. The novelty factor could give it a performance above the standard film in the franchise... or it could give it a performance well below the standard. Haha. We've had examples of CGI entries in franchises succeeding (think Stand By Me, Doraemon), but we've had more disappointing. Since Crayon Shin-chan is maybe more comparable to Doraemon than others though, I'd bet it has a fair chance of doing well. I sort of want to predict a breakout of sorts and give it a chance at reaching ¥3 billion since we've had many films come break franchise ecords in the last 3 years.

Also, Super Mario is going to reach ¥5 billion very fast with the boost from Golden Week, but I want to see Thursday's number before projecting the day(s) that it'll likely reach it. 9 or 10 days (Sat or Sun) is looking very likely though.

Wednesday was expected to be its biggest day of the week, and boy did it deliver. It very likely set a new Wednesday record. It is based on my estimate, but holiday Wednesdays can also be easy to overpredict (they often are despite me trying not to do it!).

And for those curious, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's OD estimate for Wednesday is pretty bad (or just not good). Not just because it could only manage to debut in 4th place, but it's also about half of Dr. Strange 2 which opened on a holiday Wednesday on Golden Week last year too making them very comparable.

Vol. 1 grossed ¥1.07 billion ($9.7 million) and Vol. 2 grossed ¥1.14 billion ($10.1 million). So with this estimated Wednesday for Vol. 3, I'd predict something similar, a little above ¥1 billion, but the USD total will be less due to the bad exchange rate.

Seems good, honestly, or as good an estimation can really get with mimorin acting so wonky anyway.

Shame about GOTG but I would say it's not unexpected. With both Mario and Conan going so big this year, and even MER doing solid, there is just no room for GOTG at all.
