Great stuff as always Corpse. I personally see it hitting 38B around the end of he month and then letgging out to 39-40, but we’re really entering the long haul now and it’s hard to say just how much longevity it will have until we see it directly.

Thanks.

So apparently some Japanese politicians have been caught using images and motifs from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba for their campaign posters... Shueisha and WSJ had to come out and say they're not involved with any of it. :funny:

Post subject:  Re: Japan Box-Office: February Release Schedule

That's crazy. I didn't read much about the situation in Japan, but I doubt it was anything too extreme. I think it was just them basically photoshopping their campaign slogans, images, or themselves overtop Demon Slayer images and such. Not to say this isn't "serious", but I don't believe it was intended to do more than to simply catch the eye of the people.

In other news, I saw some people saying Animal Crossing: New Horizons has overtaken the original Pokemon games (Red and Green) to become the best selling game in the market this week after just 10 months in release. I didn't see any official announcement yet though, so perhaps some Famitsu scans or something leaked early with the announcement. Mentioning this since I was posting video game sales over the spring/early-summer last year and how it looked like ACNH had the potential to break the 25 year old record.

Here's hoping season 2 of the anime or the next movie announcement is announced, and not punted to a later event this year.

The openers are a bit tricky. Endless SHOCK is a limited release that's being given a 2-week only run (opening on Monday of this week). This film might be benefitting from event ticket prices that will greatly inflate its average ticket price, so it could end up "surprising" a bit. I already gave it a pretty high avg. ticket price in my forecast, but wouldn't be surprised if it comes in a bit higher.

And Jukai Village, unless its pre-sales are just off, looks like it's going to disappoint. It's a follow-up to last year's Howling Village, which was both a critical and box office success, so the goodwill there should have carried over at least a bit here. But for now I'm going with a forecast that corelates with its pre-sales, but let's see what it does over the weekend itself. Remember that pre-sales are only available the day-of right now at many locations, so it could simply be more of a walk-up film.

Top 10 for sure, just need to add the extra weekends in the top 10 for some older films that received re-releases last spring/summer (to assist theaters due to covid). I'll have this up later tonight.

Top 5... I'm not too sure on at the moment. I can update it, of course, but I haven't done that one in a while, so will likely need to work on it some. I'll have it updated and posted sometime over the weekend, or early next week.

*: Run in the top 10 bolstered by spring/summer 2020 delays in response to Covid-19.

Post subject:  Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (02/06-07)

I believe it's all updated now. I made note of a couple things in the post itself, but I'll note again:

*A number of films received re-releases in the spring/summer last year and made the top 10, some for several weeks, due to the delay of films that occurred from Covid (especially Hollywood films where many weren't even put back on the schedule) in an effort to kickstart the box-office again while films were being put back on the schedule after theaters reopened nationwide in June. These are noted in the chart.

**A number of films that were in release prior to Covid impacting the box office had prolonged runs in the top 10 due to, again, delays of films that followed afterwards. That's why there are a few very random films that came no where near grossing even ¥1 billion (like Birds of Prey) achieving 12 or more weeks in the top 10. These are also noted in the chart. Parasite, in particular, racked up a whopping 24 weeks in the top 10 both due to this, in addition to have already achieving several weeks in the top 10 with a great run before Covid impacted the box office.

As for how many weeks Demon Slayer may end up in the top 10... we'll just need to wait and see. It's going to be a lot though, much higher than its current run of 17 weeks (this weekend included). The lack of Hollywood releases is going to bolster it, and I'd be really surprised if it earns less than 30 weeks in the top 10. But trying to determine a number or even range right now isn't really doable.

I think 25 weeks in Top 10 will be doable but yeah Titanic's record it too massive.

I almost forgot Your Name was re-released as well. Strange that Toho didn't update its numbers along with all the Ghibli films that were re-released. But I guess Your Name was a super limited re-release compared to the others.

Post subject:  Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (02/06-07)

Yeah. It was one of the first films to get a re-release when theaters began reopening in mid-May. Only locations in rural prefectures started reopening then and with just 25% capacity, so the numbers were very small.

Also I just saw that I have Weathering With You listed with 5 weeks from its 2020 re-release. Technically, it didn't have a re-release, and it achieved 18 original run weeks in the top 10 (non-consecutive) because it was still in a handful of theaters during the Covid situation and got an expansion when theaters reopened in mid-May that pushed it from 13 weeks to 18 weeks. I'll edit out the 5 weeks from re-release since it didn't receive a re-release.

Post subject:  Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (02/06-07)

Quick Weekend Updated based on Saturday's results:

Loved Like a Flower Bouquet was already looking at an excellent hold going into the weekend, but it might manage a second weekend increase! There hasn't been a wide playing romance film in quite some time (and I mean a LONG time, as in I can't even remember, so likely a half-year or more), so audiences, females in particular, are definitely coming out strong for this one.

Jukai Village will indeed come in above the forecast. It's not performing as well as I was expecting, and probably not as well as Toei was anticipating either, but it might hit ¥100 million (~$1 million) over the weekend if Sunday sees a sizable bump. This could be one of the few cases of theaters closing by 8pm possibly limiting its potential as I would expect it to be more of an evening/night film.

Endless SHOCK on the other hand is unlikely to come near its forecast. Its pre-sales represented an incredibly high number of its Saturday ticket sales, so unless it has some special ticket prices that will greatly inflate its average ticket price, it should come in noticeably lower than I originally forecasted.

And in terms of the holds for the holdovers, most films look like they'll come somewhere around the forecast, but perhaps having slightly better declines than predicted. Gintama: The Final will likely avoid a 40% drop, maybe even sub-35%, which would be quite solid since its last weekend was inflated from the giveaway.

Does this include the two weeks in the Top Ten of 2012's 3D re-release?

It does not. List updated! Thanks, mark.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's 16 weeks in the top 10 has been updated to 17 weeks as well since it achieved one week in the top 10 last year from its 2020 4D re-release.

I think that's it.
