I can't help you if you think Avengers wasn't a sequel to Thor.

Would it be possible to sticky this? That would be greatly appreciated.

I 2nd this. Needless to say it's more relevant than the Yahoo Review chart archive thread (I mean I know it's kind a running gag slash sacred territory thing, but just saying).

I'm no mod, but I put it in "other notable threads" a long time ago...

Mockingjay 2 should do closer to $30 mil in "preview" showings.

I doubt it. Previews just really aren't a popular thing anymore.

Sad that Aurora just killed the midnight start and craze. I wonder how SW7 will do in previews. SITH was the 1st uber midnight movie.

Also they need to start uber blockbusters with midnights again. it looked like MJ1 had soft start that got busier closer to midnights.

This is purely anecdotal evidence, but my hometown still did midnights for the final Twilight movie, four months after Aurora, and sold out all five of the shows that they ran.

I'd love for the industry to go back to midnight as the early-open standard. These early screenings are typically fans-only affairs to begin with, so it's difficult to imagine that the vast majority of those fans wouldn't show up either at midnight or at some point on the opening day. And what's more, the atmosphere is just extremely different. Apart from a couple of scenes, the early screening of Mockingjay that I went to was really subdued, and these were supposed to be the fans who were psyched to see it "first." It's also way different wandering into an auditorium at a pretty standard time as opposed to physically and mentally gearing up for seeing a movie at an ungodly hour. Midnights felt special in a way that these early screenings probably never will.

I think that it's also worth pointing out that even with several extra hours of business, only one of the movies that opted for previews has since matched Dark Knight Rises's midnight gross.

If you compare it to The Heat, that is a fantastic number. The Heat also made 1M in summer previews on it's way to 39M OW.

However,

If you compare it to Anchorman 2, which was PG-13, opened in December, and did 2.3M in previews, it's awful. That had an OW of 26M.

Based on those comparisons, if those previews had been on a Thursday night it would have lead to anywhere from 11 - 39M OW. :D

Bump for tonight. I think 5-6 is the right range for it. From what I hear there is only 7 PM showings though.

Theatre managers are panicking. They REALLY want this to be Avatar. Such a lame year for box office.

Apologies for the lack of updates to the main post, I'll try doing that this afternoon. But I do want to note that American Sniper's $5.3 million is the fifth best midnight AND preview number ever for an R-rated movie, and the biggest for a non-sequel ever (beating Watchmen's $4.55 million). Like, what the fuck.
