It needs to beat Brokeback Mountain's $83,043,761. Normally, I'd say easily - but it's gonna lose lots of its 3D screens to Jonas Bros., so it'll be close. Very close.

75m looks good, much more will be hard since it will lose most of its' 3D locations to JB this weekend, and will probably drop over 50%. I'd say 83m would be a surprising and rousing success considering this theater drop.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

it'll miss out by 5-10m, but wow, who was really expecting this to break out and be a mini-hit?

What a shame there arent enough 3D screens going around. This is a nice little surprise hit.

I'm afraid it'll not only lose many 3D screens, but more like nearly all of them.

MBV3D ended up losing nearly all of it's 3D screens when Coraline opened.

But MBV3D didn't have holds like Coraline. I don't think the drop will be as big as MBV3D's.

Nope. If it weren't for JONAS there would have been a very good chance, but because of it it's unlikely. After JONAS plays for a couple of weeks I think they should bring CORALINE back. JONAS won't last. Then CORALINE could play until MONSTERS VS. ALIENS opened.

that would be a very good idea, but I think most theaters (especially mine) would be too lazy to do all the switching of prints and would simply play Jonas until Mvs.A especially since its' only three weeks after JB.

They'll be losing money because JONAS is not going to hold up. They'd be better off bringing back CORALINE for a couple of weeks.

Even with Jonas, I don't see it droping more than 40%. It is still the only major animated film in the marketplace and I think it appeals wider than Jonas Bros.

Yes but a large portion of its' appeal is 3D, which it will, for the most part, be losing.
My theater just recently acquired a 2nd 3D screen and will keep coraline this weekend (albeit in our smallest theater)

Doesn't matter. Coraline is an amazing hit. Bigger than any stop-motion film since Chicken Run? Really impressive.

It won't. If Jonas breaks out to 40m the theatres will keep it in for at least another two weeks, they're not bringing Coraline back even though they should.

I agree. Just because the 3-D screens have made the majority of the profit doesn't mean that none of the people who saw it in 3-D wouldn't consider seeing it in 2-D. WOM is clearly strong, and I don't see parents who take their kids to the theater going, "Well shit, looks like it's only in 2-D. Let's go home."
Granted, families don't make up the entirety of the audience, but they're the ones most likely to see it weeks after it's released, not the older Nightmare Before Christmas fans.

I'm not convinced that this will beat Brokeback Mountain, but I sure hope so.

No. Focus used to be USA Films, and Traffic made $115 million from them.

CORALINE IS ONLY LOSING 92 SCREENS! Wow, that means that it is still in 2,063 theaters, a good portion (probably around 40%?) are 3D, meaning that both of these movies can exist.
I say yes now, it will have meager drops, may only drop about 35% this week, and less after that until MVA hits in almost a month. I say sure, this will pass 83m, could come close to 90m I think.

Half of Coraline's TC were 3D screens, so it's still around 50%.

that's what I thought, but isn't there a chance they lost a bunch of 3D screens but a bunch of theaters picked it up on 2D in response? So it looks to us like there was almost no difference but there are a lost less 3D screens? Maybe I sound dumb but that was just a concern.
All the same, this should continue to do excellent.

Does anyone have a good (free) resource for tracking # of 3D screens/theaters by week? It doesn't appear that BOM has it.

I still don't think Coraline will make to >Brokeback.

Hmm, I still think it can crawl to $80 million, but BBM seems safe.

Hmm, it has a chance again, dropping less than 5% this weekend...

MvA is gonna kill it next weekend, but I think it'll finish around $76-78 million, a very respectable number. Focus is actually doing pretty well now with mainstream releases (Though Milk was still a pretty major fuck-up).
