Re: Furiosa/Garfield weekend thread
Fury Road only made 369 mil worldwide so similar ratio would probably be not enough for Furiosa with 170 mil budget. On the other hand Garfield reportedly only costs 60.
What studios need is to get Fall Guy, IF, Furiosa opening weekends but with <100 mil budget movies. Almost like there's some genres they've abandoned that could pull that off...

Helen Keller could have seen Furious numbers coming.

Re: Furiosa/Garfield weekend thread
Memorial Day and July 4th are both garbage release dates these days. The 40 and under crowd all make plans for these weekends months in advance, films are an afterthought.
Non-event weekends like early May, mid July, early October, mid December are clearly the areas where films can become the pop culture focal point for a moment and really blow up.

Re: Furiosa/Garfield weekend thread
One Love out opening the May long weekend openers would be something. I feel like due to a lack of any type of event movie other than Apes since March, Bad Boys 2 is going to massively overperform. Wouldn't be shocked by $65M+ at this point. Those fans are going to show up. Then I see Inside Out taking full advantage of the marketplace for non-R audiences before Horizon also pulls a big surprise on the upside despite lukewarm reviews. It's just going to be another 2 weeks until it starts to feel like summer.

Furiosa the 300: Rise of an Empire of the franchise… except making less than it… unadjusted.

Re: Furiosa/Garfield weekend thread
Also the worst May long weekend #1 performance since 1984 IJ2. And that's not counting for inflation after 40 years (tickets are 3.28X more expensive or +228% more expensive).
Ghostbuster's OW looks a lot better now after going through these May films.

10.2 with previews? That would be awful imo.

Re: Furiosa/Garfield weekend thread
I know that people don't care about prequels or the character of Furiosa ...but damn, should that really have mattered so much? Was Fury Road so beloved because everyone cared so much about what happened to Mad Max himself cause I was under the impression it was so beloved because of the look and high octane action sequences, which Furiosa does just as well as its predecessor.
Worse off, if Furiosa had overperformed simiiar to Dune and Oppenheimer, studios would get it in their heads that this is what the people want - big time cinematic events made by the best the industry has to offer. Instead, the lesson of 2024 is that the lessons of 22/23 didn't really matter. Comfort franchises are back in, taking chances with high profile directors seems to be on its way out.

Re: Furiosa/Garfield weekend thread
Well Mad Max is an iconic character, i think people went to see fury road at first because they wanted to see max. But i know Tom Hardy was toxic on set so they probably didnt want him to return.

Re: Furiosa/Garfield weekend thread
I honestly would have made a Furiosa wins the summer club if not for how I could tell from Keyser's posts it wasn't coming, so I can't pretend it was obvious, I thought the right type of blockbuster was a George Miller type of director that's cool on social media and gets good reviews.
I will say I never liked the ATJ casting, she is too frail.

Re: Furiosa/Garfield weekend thread
Fury Road adjusts to 59m OW. Furiosa May do less than half of that.
Clearly an ill advised project.

Re: Furiosa/Garfield weekend thread
One of those weekends where audience did not want to come. I thought final week presales was impacted by Deadpool but walkups being so poor means they would rather not go to the multiplex.

Re: Furiosa/Garfield weekend thread
25 mil for Furiosa is Terminator sequel level. Even the disgraced Shazam 2 opened to 30 mil.
Garfield is fine since it looks like it's doing decent internationally (90 mil WW already). Maybe kids were more into him a generation or two ago, the key was appealing to millennials and Gen X-ers who are now Jon and I don't think this was it.

Re: Furiosa/Garfield weekend thread
Really too bad Furiosa couldn't had even done over 30m. Franchise is probably dead now.
Potentially having only 1 100m this month is truly awful. Next month only has Bad Boys, Inside Out and A Quiet Place (still unsur3 about that whole Horizon movie lol) yeesh. Hopefully all of those do at least expected #s

Re: Furiosa/Garfield weekend thread
Tom Hardy is going to be paid a HUGE amount of money to return despite the issues on the last one. Sadly I don’t see Theron returning because the experience on the last movie and because Furiosa has diminished in brand value. If Venom 3 does well, probably even better.
Pull in Mel Gibson somehow too and maybe there’s a TGM type mini play they can pull off. There’s no way WB is going to want to move on a new one with untested actors as headliners.
This also sort of feels like a Prince Caspian. Follows a well received film opens in May and complete rejection.
Also, WB isn’t even reporting 4 day figure today in a move to avoid further embarrassment. It managed $25M with an inflated Sunday. Maybe $23 M otherwise?

Re: Furiosa/Garfield weekend thread
So it made 25.5m for the 3 day weekend, that is really bad.
