Do you think OPR can reach ¥19 billion ?

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: The First Slam Dunk - WKND Actual
I'm not really sure if sales are available for Avatar 2. It doesn't have any theater listings yet since it's a Disney release, and there's no where to purchase tickets on its website.

I'm a little "worried" about it. It's going to be really hard to match the original. It doesn't have to to be a success, and I still think it can do over ¥10 billion, but I wouldn't expect significantly more right now until we see something from it.

If One Piece Film Red doesn't have anymore giveaways, it'll probably finish around ¥18.8 billion.

And yep, Top Gun: Maverick is indeed still playing. It's down to 37 theaters and isn't earning much now, but as long as Toho-Towa keeps it playing through New Year, it'll *probably* break that 3-way tie for 17th place on the Top 100 chart. (Really hope it doesn't finish with ¥13.50 billion, making the 17th spot a 4-way tie...)

>The First Slam Dunk blasted out of the gate (or whatever a killer start is called in basketball), selling a huge 846,687 admissions over the weekend frame across 418 screens. Despite going 26 years since the anime ended, there was clearly still a ton of demand to see this long-awaited film from the fanbase. This is the fifth biggest OW ever in December, and the third biggest OW in Toei's history. So, what can we expected this "slam dunk" of an opening weekend to lead to? Well, it's a bit hard to say, so let's make the goal ¥7 billion ($50 million+) / 4.5 million admissions for the time being.

>Suzume held remarkably well (selling another 555,000 admissions), and once again showcasing that multiple big films can co-exist together in Japan. After four weeks in release, admissions are up to 5,615,126. This is a great sign for the future, and I wouldn't rule out it reaching ¥15 billion ($110 million), or surpassing Weathering With You's ¥14.19 billion, quite yet. The weekdays for the next three weeks will make it difficult, but if it can stay strong like this on the weekends and reach New Year where its dailies will thrive, it can still do it.

>Phases of the Moon had an okay-ish opening, selling 146,000 admissions over the weekend on 336 screens, and 251,000 admissions overs its first three-days (guessing it had some event that boosted its OD since this is a high share). Nothing exciting here, but it has a strong chance of reaching ¥1 billion for Shochiku.

>Black Adam basically bombed but nothing surprising to be had there. I have not come across its weekend admissions yet, but it sold 110,234 admissions over its first three-days across 762 screens. Expect a finish around ¥600 million ($4.5 million). So, yeah, just another Marvel/DC film to add to the disappointment list.

>One Piece Film Red finally leaves the Top 5 in its eighteenth weekend. And after eighteen weeks, it has now sold a staggering 13,443,861 admissions (#12 all-time). Toei will probably focus on Slam Dunk now, so I'd expect a finish around ¥18.8 billion ($137 million) and 13.55 million admissions for this truly insane performance.

Only thing that's up is a few midnight shows I think, but not even purchasable at the moment (Shinjuku is doing 4, all subbed, an HFR 3D, M4D 3D, regular 3D, and dolby 2D, so they probably expect a reasonably big opening atleast).

Big News for Suzume is that it is coming to Western countries in April 2023, which is a long wait and I understand why but it is quite exciting.

Suzume might missed the deadline of this year's Oscars.
But at this point it might not even win Japan Academy Prize.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (12/03-04); Charts Update
Despite some meh feedback about CG animation for both Toei Animation Dragon Ball Super:Super Hero and The First Slam Dunk, despite the latter doing well and better than the former, Is it possible that Toei will be transitioning to CG animation for there films going forward and b/c of that is there a possiblity that the upcoming Kitarō and a future One Piece film will go the CG route?

It's a possibility, and might indeed become more regular. I think it might come down to the individual films though. Going the CG route proved poor for Dragon Ball Super, and it finished below expectations. Slam Dunk, being so long-awaited, was *probably* pretty immune to this. The fans haven't had any content in 26 years... It's understandable they'd come out either way, at least early on (we'll see how legs go).

I have a feeling Oda might balk at the CG idea for One Piece. I know Toriyama has a similar role in the recent Dragon Ball films, but I think Oda is probably even more hands-on with the One Piece films. Another difference, I think, is that Toei has been animating One Piece non-stop weekly for almost 24 years now, it's a full-time job, so all of that (staff, animators, models, the process, the routine, etc.) is largely in place. It'd be a pretty odd, and probably disruptive, to change that up for one film release, especially knowing CG will likely turn off many fans.

Exactly as Corpse said. Slam Dunk fans were always going to go watch a movie after literally 20+ years without new Slam Dunk content. (Seriously, this is like the longest a property so successful has gone without any new content of any kind.)

Btw I imagine it is because Inoue is highly protective of his IPs. His wife is the person in charge of international releases, it was revealed in a post made by Ivrea, the Argentinian licensor of Inoue's manga and they are pretty. (This is pretty rare since most times authors leave this to their old publishers, e.g. Toriyama, who worked at the same time with Shueisha leaves this to Shueisha, in fact there is an entire department dedicated to licensing Dragon Ball outside of Japan with the consent of Bird Studio - Akira Toriyama's studio).
(This might also be why we haven't had a REAL or Vagabond anime... Or any adaptation of any sort, I can't imagine Inoue not getting some requests from movie studios, anime studios, drama studios wanting to adapt his properties.)

Anyways, going back to the topic of CGI. They tested the waters this year as you said and while they obviously didn't lose money with Dragon Ball (And in fact it had amazing results outside Japan, proving that international fans of DB will just watch whatever Toei throws at them) I don't know if CGI films/anime will become a trend, I hope not.

EDIT: One thing I could see happening is trying it with properties that probably wouldn't have had much sales anyways or whose consumers won't care too much about, like you said with Gegege no Kitaro I think they could perhaps try it. Maybe with old animes they did in the 80s/90s, if CGI is cheaper than animation, and they are a bit doubtful if the properties can still be profitable. An example out of the top of my head would be Sakigake Otokojuku, though that's probably a franchise too old and niche. Maybe their next scapegoat is Saint Seiya... As always lol.

Thanks and one more thing before I go off to work for the rest of the day and it is another topic. Avatar The Way Of The Water I am excited to track its Japan performance but of course I will keep my expectations in place. It will do well but either way It could decline from the first Avatar or increase from it but I do not see it beating Titanic as the highest grossing James Cameron film there. Still happy about it coming out but I will not go overboard about it doing crazy business.

I'm cautiously optimistic about it. Japan isn't a market where sequels to major releases (uber-blockbusters, but especially those that gross well above that mark) tend to perform well (at least not as well or more than their predecessor). There'll be a lot of interest in it, including from myself, so I'll try to keep up on how it could be looking next week before it opens.

The biggest thing people are going to see is that the USD result is almost certain to come in well below the original even if it would match its performance (Yen/Admissions). The exchange rate when the first played was really positive and the completely opposite of the exchange rate right now. There's a 52% difference today vs when the original opened... That means Avatar 2 has to gross (JPY) and nearly sell 52% MORE admissions than the original just to match its USD total in the market right now.

Everyone will be looking at the USD result, but don't let that be the determining factor of success here. Expecting Avatar 2 to perform over 50% better than the original in JPY/Admissions in order to match it in USD is incredibly unfair and unrealistic.

Apparently I also heard tickets will go 48 hours before the OD for Avatar 2 according to BOT.

Yeah, reservations go live at some locations on Tuesday, and basically everywhere on Wednesday. This isn't exactly late though since this happens with the vast majority of openers.

The difference (because it's a Disney film) though is that, to my knowledge, advance sales are unavailable prior to reserve seating next week which begins on Tuesday/Wednesday. Like, you can't buy a ticket for the movie right now. Not on the official website, not on any theater websites. For any other film from any other distributor, advance sales are available many weeks/months early (that's how we get the theater counts for non-Disney releases so early).

Disney's the only distributor where their films' advance sales are seemingly unavailable until the actual reservations begin a couple days ahead of opening day. Note: Midnights tickets at Toho Shinjuku might be available at the theater itself since they have their showings up, but they're unavailable to purchase online.

Disney releases are the only films where advance sales aren't available until the week of release (since that's when seat reservations go up). Theaters have boycotted Disney releases, as we know, due to Disney+, so I suppose they don't do advance ticket sales for their films anymore since they don't know when they'll go to streaming. If they're going to streaming really early (45 days, for example), theaters aren't going to book them very well and will make plans to drop them at the end of that window.

In short, they decided to combine episode 10th and 11th from Season 2 with episode 1 from Season 3 into a movie. Additionally, the movie will be premiered in theaters in 80 countries and regions until April 2023, which is the official release date of Season 3.

Yuma Takahashi really has a skill in marketing. He is the cash printing machine for Aniplex.

You're wrong, it's in 418 theaters in Japan which is wide as fuck, I think only the last two conan films got more at around 500.
