That's so disappointing. I really expected it to be a $17-$22 million opener. But I'm confident it'll get into double digits with that number. Just $10-$13 million now instead.

:(

That's a bummer. A breakout for Beast would have ensured a late summer creature feature for many years to come. Now they'll all have to go back to The Asylum. And I'm totally screwed in the box office game.

I can't find how that compares to Demon Slayer

That did $3.8 million.

It'll be more front loaded than that but outdoing the 17m of Jujutsu Kaisen seems very likely at least

Beast is sliding down the Tomatometer. Now at 69% with 98 reviews. I wonder if it's got enough reviews in the bank to hold firm and not change too much. A dip below 60% would be disappointing. It's only 1% above Orphan: First Kill, which has 69 reviews.

Dragon Ball got a $6.4M opening "day" after $4M in previews. Is that a record for frontloadedness? Beast might be able to win the weekend after all. :hahaha:

*edit - thenumbers updated and the $6.4M was actually its true friday.

I definitely didn't see Dragon Ball going over Demon Slayer. These anime films are becoming pretty consistent. Wonder how long it will be until they get a $100M grosser.

Beast should hit $10M with that, but its still pretty disappointing. Idris Elba has had a rough pair of Augusts.

He's got another disappointment coming out next week, too.

I find the ads funny for it. They say "this is a different kind of blockbuster", yeah, the flopping kind! :funny:

Will Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero break new ground this weekend? Will it be the first Japanese-language anime (or not) to open #1 at the U.S. box office?

Awful hold for Bodies Bodies Bodies when it doubled theater count. I'm curious what the drop would have been if they didn't add any.

Why does BOM separate previews from OD and OW for Cruncyroll films?

Technically, yeah. The first Pokémon movie opened at #1 back in 1998, but I think it was only released in dub in the U.S., so... yeah, Super Hero would be the first "Japanese-language film" to do it since it has both sub and dub screenings.

Also, if DBS: Super Hero's OD stands, it broke the OD record for an anime film in the U.S. (beating the first Pokémon movie's 24-year-old record of $10,096,848).

That is quite strange. But I much prefer it. Hopefully they do it with all films.

Other than Superman (70s) and Batman (89-95) and a few other cases, supermovie movies didn't have a huge following and had lots of flops along the way. It's been over the last 20 years they have become mega events.

I wonder if anime could be going through a similar cycle. Many of the kids that grew up with anime in the 90s and 00's are now older and it's been normalized as mainstream and will be even more so with new generations. anime movies / television on streaming platforms like Netflix have also helped more people discover it.

As the domestic market gets more diverse demographics, perhaps 10-15 years from now some of these event anime movies will be where Marvel has gotten today. That would be something to see an anime movie possibly win a year's box office or rise up the ranks of OW records.

Wouldn't be shocked to see studios eventually do M&A here given the IP is only going to grow in value.

Could you explain what you mean here a little? Not calling you out on it, just from my experience this doesn't stack up. Are you talking pre-Superman: The Movie, in the Alyn and Reeves days? because since the 70s they've both been big. Either that or they just haven't had any projects being made, such as the the mid-80s where there wasn't any Batman projects, and you can't really say the movies didn't have a huge following if there were no movies being made at a particular time. Since the 70s, everything they've been in has been big with a following, whether it's the Adventures of Lois & Clark, Batman: The Animated Series, or every movie. Even the original Batman television series was big and even spawned a movie, so I'm just not sure what era you're referring to where "supermovie movies didn't have a huge following and had lots of flops along the way". If you're talking pre-70s, it's probably not relevant anymore. Something being popular for the last 50 years isn't contingent on, and doesn't adhere to, any cycle.

I'm just talking about movie box office. The shows and comics had big followings but more talking about superhero movie openings mostly where they now dominate the charts.

TGM is just $16.6M away from $700M off of a $5.85M 13th weekend. Needs a 3.84 multiplier to get there so with Labor Day, possible Oscar run, possible re-release for Veterans Day, it's now a LOCK to $700M and become #5 film of all time! :D

Slightly related to Dragon Ball overperforming, I feel like there's huge untapped commercial potential for live action adaptation of Studio Ghibli classics. The cinema fan in me squirms at the idea but there's no denying the likes of Totoro and Spirited Away have gigantic cult followings and there could be a big audience for them.
