>One Piece Film Red totally dominated again, delivering the third biggest second weekend of all-time, selling an additional 1.03 million admissions over the weekend frame to bring its 9-day admissions up to 4,622,920. As such, it became only the fifth film ever to sell more than 1 million admissions over its second weekend. Also... it's the fastest film to exceed 4 million admissions, and only the second film to ever exceed ¥6 billion after its second weekend.

So, where is this monster headed? Over ¥10 billion for certain, but how far beyond the uber-blockbuster milestone is too early to say. We need to see a week or two out of Obon to get an idea of potential post-holiday legs before we can really decide because the potential is still really high.

>Jurassic World: Dominion held well after its harsh second weekend decline and should be able to get above ¥6 billion (~$45 million) from here. That will be around a 25% drop from its predecessor, so not ideal, but not too bad, I suppose. Kind of just an "okay" result.

>Kingdom II pulled off an increase, a much needed increase, too, thanks to its giveaway event. It's been a bit unusually frontloaded for this time of year. It's likely to exceed ¥5 billion (~$37 million) now at least, so that's satisfactory, although it's not going to really challenge its predecessor (¥5.73 billion) despite the much higher opening weekend. Why have legs been meh? Not sure. Maybe its reception has been lackluster, but with the opening weekend it had, it missed out on a good bit more.

>Minions 2 also just pulled off that increase, though slips a spot. Get this: It's now the highest-grossing imported animated film since 2019. It only took just over ¥3.3 billion to get there, which tells you a lot about how poorly Disney has done. Alright, so, ¥4 billion is locked up now (sort of already was, but good to have it guaranteed), and I expect it'll finish around ¥4.5 billion (~$34 million). This will be about a 15% decline from its predecessor, so not bad at all, quite respectable, in fact.

>Top Gun: Maverick continues to show its incredible strength by delivering the best increase over the weekend. This is one of the highest twelfth weekends ever (off the top of my head, I believe it's in the top 10 biggest). It has sold 6,937,667 admissions after twelve weeks. I think this one still has a good ¥1 billion left in the tank, if not a decent bit more, so expect a finish between ¥12-12.5 billion (~$91-94 million).

>Tang's weekend gross is an estimate, but since I was almost dead on with its 5-day total above, the weekend estimate should be quite close. I'll update it when it becomes available. Over the five-day, it sold 195,800 admissions on 356 screens. EDIT: ACTUAL ADDED.

>The re-release of 2002's Pokémon Heroes: Latios & Latias, the fifth Pokémon film, performed much better than I would have predicted. Its weekend gross is an estimate (again, will update when available), but its 5-day coming close to ¥200 million on 166,748 admissions across 307 screens is pretty dang good, IMO. The sixth Pokémon film is being released next week, so let's see how it does. There hasn't been a new Pokémon film since 2020, so I wonder if these re-releases are a disguise in the form of the franchise's 25th anniversary to test the waters in reviving the franchise in the future.

>Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is nearing the end of its run (some more theaters dropping it on Wednesday) and is well outside the top 10 now, but its total is up to ¥2,475,713,250 ($18.4 million). Figured you'd want to know, bullza! Still assuming it'll eventually hit ¥2.5 billion, but this will likely be the last update.

How in the hell did Top Gun: Maverick increase, and by 20%! What a coincidence that it also increased in the United States of America.

I really hope its summer run can convert into an awards run of some sort.

How in the hell did Top Gun: Maverick increase, and by 20%! What a coincidence that it also increased in the United States of America.

I really hope its summer run can convert into an awards run of some sort.

It had a giveaway is why, though still quite good.

Ah yes, I forgot about the giveaway. But I still cannot imagine just a giveaway being so influential to the weekend's box office. Wasn't it just a sticker sheet or something? This sort of stuff is given away for free in most markets. But I'm still amazed that in its twelfth weekend that simply a giveaway can get so many more people out to see a three-month old film. Anyway, pleased that it did.

The new Top Gun giveaway actually began on the 15th (Monday). That's a big reason it was up over 150% versus last Monday and over 80% versus last Tuesday. (Thanks for sharing its Monday figures, Kanroji.)

The 20% increase it saw over the weekend was certainly good, but increases over the weekend of Obon Festival aren't uncommon. These major holiday periods are the only weeks some people really have time to catch a movie, so for those that haven't had the chance, they use this opportunity to come out.

One Piece Film Red - Daily Tracker

Sat. (08/06): ¥1,232,095,230 ($9.1 million) / 869,407
Sun. (08/07): ¥1,022,141,800 ($7.6 million) / 710,145
Mon. (08/08): ¥591,000,000 ($4.4 million) / 430,000
Tues. (08/09): ¥466,000,000 ($3.5 million) / 340,000
Wed. (08/10): ¥525,000,000 ($3.9 million) / 415,000
Thur. (08/11): ¥593,000,000 ($4.4 million) / 430,000 *Holiday*
Fri. (08/12): ¥548,000,000 ($4.1 million) / 395,000
Sat. (08/13): ¥833,137,000 ($6.2 million) / 573,195
Sun. (08/14): ¥663,963,000 ($5.0 million) / 456,805
Mon. (08/15): ¥586,000,000 ($4.4 million) / 428,000
Tues. (08/16): ~¥435,000,000 ($3.3 million) / ~315,000

Cumulative Total (11-Days): ~¥7,495,302,810 ($55.9 million) / ~5,365,000

**********

I was expecting Tuesday to be a little lower, honestly (same for every film in release), so very nice to see Tuesday still largely benefitting from Obon Festival.

And One Piece adding over ¥1 billion from just Mon. and Tues. again this week is nuts. Its running total is far and away the second highest ever.

I'm thinking Wednesday will come in lower, but skimming a handful of locations, reservations look solid and I don't really see any big change from Tuesday, so it might see a small decline or remain flat. We'll see. It looks certain to exceed ¥8 billion before even going into its third weekend, and might be closer to ¥8.5 billion.

That makes more sense. Thanks for the context.

Anyway, it looks good for $90 million or more. Astonishing run. Its second biggest overseas market behind the United Kingdom. I wonder if this bodes well for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One in Japan. The last one did $42 million.

It's just a shame that since early spring, the Yen (exchange rate) has been at a 20-24 year low versus the Dollar (the US Dollar has become ridiculously strong worldwide, but Japan has really seen that impact more than just about any market, I think, due to having little/no inflation for 30 years). It'd be around $100 million right now, and probably targeting *at least* $110 million+ in almost any year since 1998 except for 2022 (it'd be more like $125 million+ in some years).

Do we know what Super Hero's weekend actual was or would it not be reported now?

I'd imagine it has less than ¥20 million to go as of Monday.

It wasn't reported to my knowledge. The lowest number was Yuru Camp at ¥11 million, so DBS would have been lower than that for the weekend.

But yeah, should have ~¥20m or less to reach ¥2.5 billion, though that'll take some time as it sheds more locations on Wednesday.

Oh shoot, that's pretty impressive then. 12B seems pretty likely at this point.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Obon Festival; WKND Actuals (08/13-14)
And Wednesday concludes Obon Festival this year! If you're wondering why Wednesday is lower in revenue than Tuesday for some films, even thought their admissions are similar to Tuesday at the usual locations, it's because Wed. is Toho Cinemas Day (and Ladies Day at some chains), so it has the lowest avg. ticket price during the week. It's the trickiest day to estimate in revenue.

Thursday will largely be back to normal summer dailies. I'd take the Wednesday numbers and maybe half them (approx.) to get a rough idea of what we can expect.

So, definitely a strong Obon this year. Obviously One Piece was massive, the biggest August opening and Obon Festival numbers ever by a mile, but it was also lucrative for everything else as well. It should have provided enough of a boost to get Jurassic World 3 around ¥6 billion, Kingdom II above ¥5 billion, and Minions 2 around ¥4.5 billion. And can't forget Top Gun 2, which had the best % results during the holiday frame, which is almost certain to exceed ¥12 billion now!

**********

From opening day to the end of Obon Festival, it earned nearly ¥8 billion in those 12 days. That's nearly as bonkers as it gets in the market (only behind Demon Slayer's 12 day). It's the second fastest film to hit every milestone after Demon Slayer, but as we know, being second to Demon Slayer is ridiculously impressive.

All these fastest milestones (up to ¥8 billion / 6 million admissions) are: Demon Slayer > huge gap > One Piece > huge gap > everything else. This will probably be true for ¥9 billion / 7 million admissions as well.

So, where does it go from here? Just gotta wait and see. It's definitely clearing ¥10 billion, and any doubts had about this a few days ago should be gone. I wish I could provide a sort of range, but it's not really possible to know without any post-holiday data to go off of yet. After this Sunday, we should have a somewhat decent idea.

The new giveaway for One Piece 3 million copies starts august 27. This will definitely give it a boost.

A manga about Uta drawn by Oda? Yep, that'll definitely give it a big boost. And it begins on the last weekend of summer vacation, which is usually pretty strong anyway, the last opportune time to see a movie for many? Perfect date. I imagine a large portion of the fanbase will be coming out again for it (especially since they're cracking down and only allowing one book per customer regardless of how many seats/tickets they reserved to limit the number that wind up on reseller sites).

This will prolong where we might think it's headed until at least the first weekend of September now.

Toei has been flawless with the marketing.

Personally, Ado definitely contributed to the massive success of One Piece Red. Ado's official youtube channel has over 3.5 million subscribers and that number has being increased daily. In contrast, other Japanese singers such as LiSA and Aimer only gained significant popularity recently due to the widespread of Kimetsu no Yaiba. Their most watched videos are Kimetsu's related songs solely.

I bet Oda earned much more from the movie than Gotouge because the former has a better position in dealing contract as a veteran mangaka.

For the giveaway, as I remember, the majority of 4.5 million copies for Mugen Train were gone within the first 5 days. I wonder how long it will take for One Piece Red's 3 million copies.
