Post Flava'd Fifty: 2024, Count the Score (1)
Another year is coming to a close and therefore needs a countdown. And according to 2024, every other year sucks. Hey 2022, I heard you like poo, better go see a therapist too. Or something like that. Wild shit was happening earlier in the year. But the year wasn't just about hating, there was a lot to love too, and thats what we are celebrating over the next few weeks.

Close Calls:

Neon Pill and Rainbow by Cage The Elephant
-One of my most anticipated albums of the year, but while I liked it the first time, I kinda just let it go in favor of listening to their older stuff. They also only did 3 songs off it during their big headlining tour this year, so the boys must agree with me on that one.

Vertigo by Beach Bunny
Soft Spine by Spiritbox

-Flava'd Fifty regulars here that are releasing new albums early next year, so they'll probably be on the 2025 list.

Reptile by Periphery
The Rage To Overcome by Machine Head
Blame Brett by The Beaches
Bargain Bin by Weakend Friends

-The inverse where I loved these songs, but they too old to make it.

Miasma by Northlane
Paradise by Seven Hours After Violet
Breathe by Graphic Nature
Scorpion by Kingdom of Giants
Dark by Elitist

-Great metal songs here, but the FF has plenty enough screaming as is, so I'm gonna leave these off.

What It Look Like by Musalini, 38spesh and Planet Asia
Talk About It by Buddy
Sitting Ducks by Mick Jenkins

-Good rappers that might have made it in an ordinary year, but since hiphop had quite an extraordinary year that just isn't good enough.

Swallow The World by Screaming Females
Talk Is Cheap by Dr. Dog

-Both of these bands said they were done and both came back in record time. Quit playing with my feelings.

Eminem
Ty Segall
Green Day
The Decemberists
Pearl Jam
The Smile
Sum 41
Justin Timberlake and NSYNC
The Black Keys

-Old people that needed to move aside for the new generation of FFs.

Paranoia by Hippo Campus
OK OK OK by Mannequin Pussy
Nothing Matters by The Last Dinner Party

-Terrific band names.

If Looks Could Kill by Chrissy Costanza

-Hate to leave Chrissy off but in this case her solo project just didn't measure up to Against the Current.

Might have missed some here but that's plenty enough for now. Top 50 will start later ... probably.

Hopefully Beyonce is on the snub list as well.

No country songs allowed! Had meant to put that, along with Kacey Musgraves and the girl who sings Austin in the close calls but I forgots. :funny:

Will start the countdown ... now!

People say we're alike, they say we've got the same hair

50. girl, so confusing by Charli XCX and Lorde

-Brat almost missed out here, and I suppose it did in a way since this is on the remix album. But yeah, in a year that was defined by people responding to others peoples songs, its kinda sweet and adorable that these two ladies were able to work out their differences on a song and a half while some of the boys are still sniping at each other.

I heard you got dirt on me, my country encouraged me

49. Exmilitary by JPEGMAFIA

-Nice little surprise here since I usually dont love Jpeg no matter how great of reviews his album gets. In fact, this song would probably be a lot higher if I had listened to it back when it came out instead of a week ago. It has one of the best sample beats I've heard in a long time, using Wendy Rane's "After Laughter (Comes Tears)" for the main (though the beat does change a few times). He's not the first one to do, but I think even RZA would agree that exmilitary is nearly as fire as Wu-Tang's Tearz was 30 years ago. And, apparently, Jpeg really was in the air force, so this songs title is literal and figurative at the same time!

I wish you would stop yourself from calling me every time you need validation for the qualities you wanna hide

48. Crocodile Tears by Lauren Mayberry

-Another late year addition to the countdown and also how one does a solo project the right way (Lauren is usually with the band Chvrches.) Both that and the music itself give me major Phil Collins (usually with the band Genesis) vibes, and thats probably the very best compliment this song/album could get. Her voice fits the style so well.

Tongue-tied and you're terrified

47. A Work of Art by Ice Nine Kills

-Our favorite cinemacore band could have been left in the close calls, but I'm still not sure if this is the first single for a new album or just a one-off tribute to Terrifier 3. They play it in the movie and also the credits so it got almost the full "Mudvayne in Ghost Ship" tribute. They've had similiar lyrics before in both the It song and the Scream song, but there's so much passion and love for the Terrifier franchise in here, and that breakdown goes so damn hard that we shall forgive them :-p. These guys are always wecome around here and are also drawing people into the genre that might have otherwise skipped it.

PS: They wouldn't let me post the real video on here because it has an "age restriction" but you can just travel over to youtube if you wanna see Art doing his thing to the beat of this song.

Hearing you call to me

46. The Deep by Lane 8 and Art School Girlfriend

-Beepity-boop music doesn't find its way onto the FF much anymore, not since the Dubstep Craze ended, but the kids these days seem to have found a new and appealing style of it. This doesn't seem like it was made on a compuer so much as a chillputer. Very relaxing. I dig it. Lane 8 is one of the best that I found. He's so cool that he even runs his own label.

45. Meth Back! by Conway the Machine, Method Man, SK Da King and Flee Lord

-I would love to say the past meets the present in this track, with both Conway and Meth better known for being part of a collective over their solo work. Yet their verses actually book end the song, and at least here they never really cross paths with two other verses in between them. Itd be like if Luke and Rey never met in the Disney Star Wars movies. Luckily for us, every one on here kills it and the beat is super hot.

It’s all the stress, doc told me proceed cautiously and doctor knows best, I think as I fall on my knees

44. Another Day by Fucked Up

-This Ontarian punk band uses their SouthParkian method of recording for the second year in a row, where they (allegedly) write and record the whole album in a single day. Considering the results, I can't blame them for taking the other 364 (or 365 this year) off. A vintage FU amazing opening riff carries this song to the heights of Toronto before the vocals even kick in.

Intrusive thoughts, they paralyzе, nirvana's not as advertised

43. Saturn by SZA

-Major L by me for not including SZA in either of the past two years. F2F, Low and Open Arms are all dope. SZA did give us one single (so far) this year to rectify the mistake and its quite good, even if I admittedly don't understand why people take astrology seriously. Also saw her live at gov ball this year and she sounded great and looked even better. Was humping a wrecking ball in a way that would make even Miley blush.

I was taking hits of you again, building up a tolerance, you don't get me high anymore

42. Gaps in the Armoire by Ghost Atlas

-Ghost Atlas were a new find for me this year, and I'm still kinda stunned to find out they have the same singer as the metalcore band Erra (who also put out an album this year.) I guess thats why this song feels like the radio-friendly second single of a heavier band (really great acoustic opening before the rest of the instruments kick in)... but from the 00s or 90s since rock music isn't played on the radio anymore. Great song title too, which he carries over from Erra.

And I see stars that never, ever, ever looked this bright to me

41. Drunk by Maggie Rogers

-Maggie is getting awfully close to the edge of folk and country by making a song called drunk, but she is let off the hook by not mentioning beer in the song. In fact, there's no alcohol at all, its more like drunk in love with someone that may give you a hangover the next day.

Heartbreak is one thing, my ego's another, please don't embarass me motherfucker

40. Please Please Please by Sabrina Carpenter

-Yeah yeah, I know. This is probably a second day surprise considering how much hating I was doing, but half of that was in kayfabe anyway. Even though I still think Carly would sing the song better doesn't mean its a bad song. Never liked her before, still don't really, but Carps' new songs do have a way of worming their way into your head and staying there. I also always like when pop girls curse in their songs (hopefully she doesn't censor herself at the grammys like Olivia did last year.) And despite the no-country allowed rule, I also kinda like the little southern twang she puts on her voice in this song.

A lot of cats be havin' them silly rap agendas, I'm gettin' at pretenders, y'all lily ass is timid and really trash

39. Copy Cold by Mach-Hommy and Black Thought

-A slightly better companion to the number 45 song, we once again have a member of Griselda teaming up with a legendary rap group frontman (Black Thought from The Roots.) Aside from being slightly better, this song is also slightly more mysterious as genius lyrics redacted all of the Mach-Hommy parts of the song and they aren't on Apple Music either. I guess this is very intentional and he just doesn't want people reading his lyrics. Weird.

Outlive! Outlast! The nightmare from the terror of the past

38. The Flood (ǝɔᴉʇsnɾ) by In Hearts Wake and Winston McCall

-These metalcorers from Australia (big place in the metal scene right now) are so cool that they have words that are both backwards and upside down in their song titles. Also cool of them to grab fellow Australian screamer Winston McCall from Parkway Drive to come along for this ride. Anyways, while I haven't had the priviledge to see these guys yet, I'm sure the pit is wild for the hook of this song.

I know it's gonna hurt me , but I can't help try, It's like some kinda worship, I lost my mind

37. Worship by L Devine

-L Devine was on the adorable lesbian pop star train way before it became cool. Only 4.4k views for this video would suggest that she might have gotten stuck in the back or something. Anyways, this song has a terrific beat, and she sounds great on the verses, though I do think a more bombasic hook would have gone a long way.

36. Moonstruck by Sheer Mag

-A former number one and a hell of a throw back with very a groovy 70s type vibe. Also would like to give regards to their future tour mates, Amyl and the Sniffers, who also put out a solid album this year.

35. Come What May by Imminence

-More metal, but this time with violin. Lots of violin!!! These guys are from Sweden and really do have that eurosound, emulating people like Nightwish on the opening (which is epic af) and hook, but with black metal vocals on the verses. Its a nice mix. Could see parts of this song used as an anime opener or other parts in the trailer of some generic action movie.
