I tried putting together a list and the top 10 was mostly fairly obvious songs I already put on best songs list years ago. I might do one banning them like Flava did or I could do the 90s which I don't think I've done.

90's list would be good.

Evil minds that plot destruction, sorcerer of death's construction

5. War Pigs by Black Sabbath

-We all know the stories of crazy Ozzy Osbourne. He says fuck alot when speaking to his family. He bites the heads off of animals - sometimes intentionally, sometimes not. He can barely speak, but when he gets on stage (even now in his 70s) his lyrics sound the same way they did fifty years. He is probably the wildest man in rock n roll history. But this song was before all that. This album is the origin story, Paranoid and Iron Man joined War Pigs on the journey. This was 1970, fresh off the summer of 69 (thoooooose were the best days of my life), also known as the summer of love. They were so lovey dovey that nobody destroyed the set at Woodstock. But by the time the 70s roll around, we were several years into the Vietnam War and the civilians in general were getting less and less obedient. Thus why we start to see new subgenres of rock start to branch off. On one side there was punk which sought to fight the governments of the world with their anger. And then we have metal, the idea that the only thing that you can only defeat the darkness by embracing it. War Pigs is an absolutely scathing look at the people who make the decisions around war (and how those people who make those decisions never actually do any of the fighting) by comparing them to witches, demons and other biblical enemies. Which ... for 60s standards was just about the same as biting the head off a bat. And yet it also helped open people's eyes to the fact the politicians are not heroes, generals are not heroes, even soldiers with the best intentions are just tools of destruction. It's a brutal message, but one that people absolutely needed to hear at the time.

Hate to stop after only posting one (and after only posting two yesterday at that), but as Tony Shiavone used to say "We are all outta time!"

I work early tomorrow though. And while I normally hate the E word, it will give me the opportunity needed to post the final 4. So, tomorrow night, whenever I wake up from my post-work nap, we shall determine what the best song of the 1970s really was!

Ok so I am here and awake (ish). Will be able to post all the top 4 tonight. Probably like 4 and 3 now, 2 after I watch the new episode of Yellowjackets (which I was spoiled on thanks to some asshole on youtube putting the ending in THE TITLE OF THE VIDEO - fuck off with that I hope you get struck by a frivilous copyright infringement lawsuit) and then number one some time after that.

And as we wind on down the road, our shadows taller than our soul

4. Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin

-This song is considered by many to be the absolute peak of traditional rock n roll and I can't argue against it. The way it slowly builds up from an acoustic song to a guitar driven anthem was obviously quite influencial in a lot of songs both on this list, the 80s, 90s and every one since. Zeppelin are known for their big bluesy riffs (sometimes borrowed, sometimes not) but they always did quite well on the acoustic front too (Bron Y Aur Stomp is one of my favs from them.) I got into Zep a little bit earlier than most of these artists on here thanks to a project in (I think) the tenth grade where we had to pick a song from Rollingstone's recently released Top 100 Songs of all time, and LZ had plenty to choose from since RS doesn't use the same 1song1artist rules we do here on the Flava'd Fifty. I picked Black Dog, another one of their greats, but that naturally lead me to falling for Stairway which is just a few songs after it on the LZ4 album. Also, while LZ's overall prestige has dipped in recent years due to the fact that a lot of their early songs are covers where the original writers may or may not have been fairly compensated, Stairway won its lawsuit and proved itself to be 100% their song. Though its funny how nowadays the controversy is "borrowing" blues riffs from black people, back then the main controversy was something called blackmasking where if you played the record backward it supposedly sent a message to Satan. What nutter butter even thought to play it backward in the first place? As I always say, the woke police have always existed, they just shift their values every now and then.

Bus stop rat bag, Haha, charade you are

3. Pigs (Three Different Ones) by Pink Floyd

-Yup more songs about pigs. Why is that we current day Americans can identify with the frustration towards 1970s English politicians so much? Is the mass shooting epidemic our version of The Troubles? Iraq is definitely our Vietnam War ... oh wait no thats already been going on for three times as long as Nam with no end in sight. If only the hippies knew how good they had it! It doesn't help that he says "hey you white house, charade you are!" in the third act of this song, but I guess there was an actual person called White House back then. Anyway, I had Money as my top Pink Floyd on my greatest of all time list back whenever, but I'm pretty sure that was before I saw the Roger Waters concert in the fall of 2017. He was ... unfavorable towards the current administration. So much so that during this song a giant pig blimp, complete with the Trump hair, was flying around the arena. Awesome visual. Not everyone liked it. Some of my conservative friends were so mad! No politics in our concerts they said! Though strangely enough, they had no problem with Kid Rock's 'senate speech' (one where he truly actually said 'I love black people, I love white people too, but not as much as I love the red, white and blue) ... Weird how that works right? Anyway again, that show is what put me back on the Animals album, and while Pink Floyd have so so many songs that could fit in here at this #3 song (Wish You Were Here fans are raging right now,) I think it was always gonna come down to Pigs and Dogs. And I'm a sucker for some high quality concert visuals, thus Pigs win out.

Winter nights we sang in tune, played inside the months of moon, never think of never, let this spell last forever

2. Magic Man by Heart

-We've had a lot of great songs on this list. And alot of great lists. But I dunno if I can remember the first song of someone's debut album being so impactful. Metric is like 1B on my all time favorite artists list and this song must have just been the tops for Emily. What's weird is that when I was a youngin, all the most popular Heart songs were their more poppy stuff from the 80s like Alone and You're The Voice. Nowadays, Baracuda is the one that is everywhere. And that song is so so good, I played it on guitar hero a million times. But Magic Man just has something about it ... I dunno how to describe it, its so damn cool, and even though I just said it was a major influence on so many other songs, there's really nothing else like it. Not only musically, but as a cautionary tale. Never trust the magic man, ladies. And again, this was the first song on their first album (though neither it or Crazy On You was the first single for whatever reason.) Also a crazy thing, despite the 70s being very bro-rock driven, more women landed in my top ten than either the 80s or 90s list. Definitely wasn't expecting that coming in!

Out here in the fields, I fight for my meals

1. Baba O'Riley by The Who

-Of course it's Baba O'Riley. What else would it be? We've talked about influence a whole lot on this countdown and there's just nothing more influencial to all my favorite records. Now or Never Now, All My Friends, I Will Possess Your Heart ... and those are just a few. Any song where it has a slow build up, with a new instrument coming in every half minute or so - the guitars don't even hit until ninety seconds into the song. This is what happens when you plan on writing a rock opera (Tommy was a huge hit for them) but then decide screw it lets just make the best rock record of all time (up to that point anyway.) Who's Next also had Bargain, The Song is Over, Going Mobile, Behind Blue Eyes and closed out with Won't Get Fooled Again (which was the only Who song that made my GOAT list ... not sure why I made that choice, was probably just trying to be cool ... though I also still think it could be their best! its impossible to choose.) Who needs the opera when you can do all that? It's a mix of Floyd, Zep, King Crimson, The Beatles, everyone who came before them. And it also looks back at their own history. The Who were originally a punk band (maybe the first one) who evolve into something quite bigger (and better.) Yet, in the wake of the swinging 60s, they did leave a teenage wasteland behind them. I think that this mindset starting the album and Won't Get Fooled Again ending it is both a triumph and somewhat sad. There's nothing we can really do about it except what we do best. Cause we will all get much older eventually.

We're all wasted

Thanks for tuning once again! It was a good time re-exploring all this stuff. I came into a lot of these songs in an educational matter, but doing lists like always helps them become more personal and relatable. The 70s really were timeless.

I'll post full recap, the remaining close calls and maybe something else tomorrow.

Also wanted to do some album of the years ... but its weird that some years like 70, 71, 73, 77 and 79 had several of my all time favorites yet a year like 74 only had two albums that I even listened to in full lol. Guess I still have a little more exploring to do. Eh, whatever, here it is.

1972: Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars - David Bowie

1976: Dreamboat Annie - Heart
1977: Never Mind The Bollocks - Sex Pistols
