Post Re: Flava'd Fifty 80s: Tubular Edition (50-29)
28. Salt N Pepa made a fan of me not with this song, not at first anyways. It was Wrestlemania 11, typically considered the worst one (though I still like it), where this group sang their hit Whatta Man while accompanying football player Lawrence Taylor to his main event match. What an odd sentence to read if you aren’t familiar with wrestling lol. Anyways, after exploring their discovery a little further, Push It became the obvious standout. It was helped along the way by an excellent lipsync karaoke scene in the iconic film Grandma’s Boy, and recently by some humorous Geico commercials (if Scoop There It Is was a real song it would be on here.)

27. I can’t even remember the full origin story on this, but when I was a little lad, pre-99, I had only two albums that were not full of WWF theme songs. There was ACDC’s Highway to Hell (the theme for Summerslam 98, so that doesn’t really count either) and Scorpion’s greatest hits. I even had it on cassette! My dad was obviously into classic rock, but not sure why this one popped through the wall and so few of the others did until much later. Anyways, this song is also featured in the awesome Guitar Hero 3, and was one of the easier ones to get 5 stars on. So there are multiple ways to appreciate it!

26. Talking Heads have a lot of iconic songs in this era, notably the epic Once In A Lifetime and Burning Down the House. What did those songs need to make the list? MORE COWBELL! I guess it helps that I heard this song shortly after buying The Best of Will Ferrell Vol. 1. Also, I heard this on a road trip in the days before Shazam, so I had to remember the lyrics and then type them into a computer later! Was probably no big deal at a time, but that seems like a major accomplishment in 2021.

Well we are halfway through, and now I think it is time for a volunteer trip of Azkaban. I swear I didn't use any unforgiveable curses.

25. Van Halen's 1984 album is mostly known as being their foray into mainstream territory with major pop hits like Jump, Hot For Teacher and I’ll Wait (all worthy, but not quite as good), or perhaps as being the last album before David Lee Roth left the band and was replaced by Sammy Hagar. Whatever the case may be, it still had a few tracks to keep the spirit of their earlier work alive, such as the uber-fun Panama. You all may remember it from the Superbad trailer, part of the reason that movie became such a monster success on opening weekend (and McLovin.)

24. The songwriter of Twilight Zone claims that he was not inspired by the show, but by a random line in the book The Bourne Identity. Which makes this song less about spooky alternate realities and more about having a drinking problem. I don’t really care though. This song is 100% on here because of the turn it takes at the halfway point. The song becomes very Bouncey and I love it. I heard this on my first trip back from college, and remember playing it for all my hip-hop head friends who acted impressed by the bounciness, but I never caught them playing the song on their own. Why do that when you can play Empire State of Mind for the thousandth time?

23. I always considered myself a low-key Prince fan, enjoying songs like Purple Rain, Let's Go Crazy and 1999 (though like most of these songs they are way overused.) It wasn’t until last years popstar tournament (PS: fuck Pink) that I finally delved deeper into his discography and discovered his two best albums were ones I hadn’t even heard before - Sign of the Times and of course the host of WYWM, Dirty Minds. When You Were Mine sounds exactly like a song of its time, yet would any of us be surprised if this exact song was released by The Weeknd? Prince had a great habit of future-proofing his music, intentionally or not, and it shows most of all here.

That's all for now. Let's go Cavs in the NBA Draft Lottery tonight! If they win the #1 pick I'll post more songs later, if not I probably will anyways, but won't be in as good of a mood.

Yay Detroit

Slowly making my way through the list, The Heart of Rock and Roll doesn't feel like an 80's top song to me.

22. Hearing about Neil Peart’s death last year was tragic and terrible, but it gave us all an excuse to go back through Rush’s discography and see how truly great it was. The standout for many, including Paul Rudd and Jason Segel in I Love You Man, was Tom Sawyer. And while that is a killer track, Limelight is the standout in their discography for me. I also remember seeing them at work one time and there was a mini blimp with a camera on it floating around the stadium to capture audience footage for a dvd or something. Very cool idea from a very cool band.

21. The Clash are another artist best known for what they did in the late 70s, the London Calling album. However, even after getting super weird with Sadinista, Clash showed they still had some hits on their belt with the Combat Rock album, featuring both Rock the Casbah and Should I Stay or Should I Go. I love how this song maintains their usual anti-establishment attitude with such a cheery melody. Will Smith even decided to sample it on his song Will 2K which celebrated the coming millennium and apocalypse caused by computers.

20. After breaching out his own with some very successful hits like Sususudio and In The Air Tonight, Phil Collins reunited with the boys in the band for their iconic Invisible Touch album. Not only did it provide the best scene in an overrated movie called American Psycho, but the best song Mr. Collins ever came up with. And yes, eagle eyed viewers might have noticed that I switched Land of Confusion for Invisible Touch at the last moment. Sue me! That song has better lyrics, but IT is just so much fun and undeniable.

Meant to do more but my internet and stomach are acting up on me. I will do more later (a promise this time!) and we are still well on pace to finish before next Monday when I will have to rejoin the year 2021.

Nah I feel like 80s Genesis and Phil Collins solo are pretty much the same. Had a hard time picking just one, obviously ITAT and Sususudio are fantastic songs.

Some more songs shall be incoming!

Solsbury Hill is his best song but it was in the 70s so In Your Eyes is a good pick

I can feel the Bruce snub coming

19. Yo Dre, gimme a funky ass bassline. I dunno why Ice Cube’s boss in the movie Straight Outta Compton was so upset when Ice impromptly debuted it in the club. “No more of your reality rap!” He said, but I feel like this one is funky enough to dance too. Sure the lyrics are quite aggressive, and with some things that might get Ice cancelled anyday now. But he delivers 3 dope (and often hilarious) verses and Eazy-E tags in to finish it off with a changeup in the beat to go along with it.

18. Another former Genesis singer adjusted very well to the style of the 80s. Gabriel wins this battle, but I think I like Collins’ more overall. Naturally, I first heard this song through another band, this time it was pop punkers SR71, best known for their hit Right Now (she may not be miss right, but she’ll do right now.) Though on that same album they made the original version of the song 1984 before passing it off to Bowling For Soup. I’m not sure how all this connected, but it’s pretty trippy bronanas.

17. Paid In Full was originally on the 90s list before I learned it was actually an 80s song. 1987 too so I missed that one by quite a bit. Anyways, this song is mostly just two guys talking about shit over a really dope beat. But that’s only because the one verse in this song is so damn good that it couldn’t possibly be followed up on! You all might also remember this being the song Snoop sings during his cameo in the movie Old School.

16. You might recognize Kickstart My Heart from about 100 different movie trailers. That might seem like an obnoxious amount, but this song gets you so amped, so it’s hard to really blame the marketing departments around the world. Apparently this song is based on a true story where Nikki Six nearly died and required not one, but two adrenaline shots to kickstart his heart! Motley Crue just living Pulp Fiction in real life I guess.

Wow what could possibly be better than these four classics? Well we have four more days to find out! For now I'ma check out Wrath of Man.

Also, stuffp, meant to ask do you have a preferred Huey Lewis song or is this your first time really hearing him?

A few more songs. I'm only gonna do 5 total today (3 now, 2 later) then start the top ten tomorrow.
