18. Yep, Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta is another Office Space song, this time by Geto Boys. It is the backdrop for a montage of Peter finally realizing his dream of doing nothing all day. And except for the social interaction and open restaurants, that dream has been mandatorized. Anyways, this song is made to sit back and chill with, admiring a hard day’s work. My days don’t usually pullin the trigger and/or tellin off shit, but I can still relate to what they’re saying. The verse from “the president” at the end still holds true a little too much.

17. Also known as the song that destroyed a million robots in the most recent Star Trek, Sabotage has been everywhere for over twenty years. And obviously Beastie Boys were a hip-hop group known for that, and for good reason, but songs like Sabotage show how much depth there was to their style. They could go punk at anytime they want, or in many other directions. They were a five dimensional tesseract capable of breaching time and space. This was also the one song in Guitar Hero where playing the bass part was more fun than the guitar.

16. Opening with a huge rip from a bong, Gin and Juice is all about finding ways to come up with funky ass shit every single day. Snoop Doggy Dogg hit the scene hard with G Thang and there were huge expectations going into his debut album. Well they were met both critically and commercially, as the album broke the record for sales for a new artist. And Snoop has been a cultural icon ever since, the guy you’d wanna party with above all others.

15. Blink-182 are known as a band who likes to have a good time. They had just come off from two of the most ridiculous music videos ever when they released Adam’s Song. I think that gives the song so much more impact though. Everyone always says “I never would have believed it” when their friends/loved ones take their own lives. Sometimes it’s the ones who laugh the loudest you need to watch out for.

14. Friday I’m In Love is another song that you would have sworn was from the 80s, but nope, not close with 1992. And peak Cure was actually as late as 1989 when they released Disintegration. So maybe Friday I’m In Love serves as a hangover song, after going on a 10 year bender of sadness everything suddenly looks very bright again. Not on every day, but one out of seven is better than nothing.

13. Christina Aguilera was the second female teen mega popstar to crash the last year of the decade. And she was pretty similar to the first, they were even mousekateer togethers. Though while Genie In A Bottle is still a sex-fueled song, she wants you to earn it first (at least until the Dirrty video.) Aguilera always had an amazing voice, and whenever she did her own thing it sounded great.

12. Weezer were another 90s artist who hit the ground running on their debut record. It’s like, who are these dorks? But then once you get past the extremely fun and meta Buddy Holly you realize these fellas can rock, and Say It Aint So is the most definitive proof of that. You can see the influences from so much of 00s rock right here on this album. And while SIAS hits hard, it can still be a jam that everyone sings along to.

11. Foo Fighters were also a group that was more known for silly poppy songs like Big Me, the one with the Mentos. So I think it took people by surprise when both Everlong and My Hero hit, making people have to actually wonder if Grohl’s new group could be as good as his last one. That debate is unfair since one has so many more songs than the other, but that they are even close is something once considered insanity.

Genie should NEVER be above ...BOMT in any list. this is a robbery.

Yes both are the deifnition of teen pop late 90s but ...BOMT is a hair better.

10. At last we discover the source of all male sadness in the 90s, Fiona Apple and her criminal ways. At least she is willing to confess though, which is the first step towards forgiveness. Along with making great music, you can get away with almost anything if you have that going for you. Do we call this goth pop? Or the beautiful girl who rejected the goth pop? While Fiona definitely slayed on her debut, follow up was also very strong, appropriately titled; When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He'll Win the Whole Thing 'fore He Enters the Ring There's No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might so When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land and If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right.

9. 2Pac put out so much music after his death that it almost became comedic. It might make one forget just how great of an experience it was at first. Changes was originally recorded in 1992, but not released until 1998. And I think it helped people get some closure on the whole situation, even if we’ll never understand why the whole thing happened in the first place. And obviously Pac would have rather been alive when these changes occurred, and certainly not everything has changed, but I think the song works as a theme anytime some progress (we was ready for a black President!) in our society and is therefore timeless.

8. Chili Peppers knocked it out of the park on their bustout record Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and I enjoy the funky stuff when Dave Navarro briefly joined the band in the mid 90s (love Aeroplane), but it was their second run with guitarist John Frusciante (who has since left and come back again) that made me love the band. There is a ton of great stuff to choose from on Californication, but Otherside and it’s quest to escape the darkness within and without wins for me.

7. On what turned out to be their last original record, Rage Against the Machine fully gave into their political expense. All the raging was to lead to revolution, culminating in the battle of los angeles. Sleep Now In The Fire takes us into the new self proclaimed messiah’s mind, perhaps one a little too full themselves. But when fire is what you desire you tend to follow the one who promises to burn this motherfucker to the ground. I hope they don’t cancel their summer tour, cause we need them more than ever even after twenty years.

6. Metallica makes a western on the The Unforgiven (and does it very well again on the Unforgiven 2 and less very well again on Unforgiven 3.) Having conquered the entire world of metal in the 80s, the guys breached out and started trying some new things. That eventually led to the dark days, but for now it worked, taking on a more mainstream style of rock without sacrificing their instinct to shred. This might be Hetfield’s best work as a singer too, showing his rasp battle weariness to his softer reflective tones. Also, with Metallica coming it at number six, that means we will have a new artist to grace the #1 spot on a Flava’d Fifty!

5. I gave Wonderwall the nod on my Greatest Songs list, but that and Don’t Look Back In Anger are basically tied for my favorite Oasis song, and what a god damn great album this was with the two of them on it. I also think that even though Liam’s vocals work very well with their signature britpop style, Noel has always been the superior singer, a debate that was effectively settled in their solo careers. Though they both sure are cocky little cunts, with my boy Noel once saying “should people put their lives in the hand of a rock n roll band? If it’s us then yes.” I would assume most people were kidding but here it’s 50/50 at best.

Eh you don’t have to Mau. Aguilera may have won the battle of 99 but definitely lost the war. Her only hit song in the last fifteenish years was as a feature for Pitbull.

Though her influence is still heavy. I feel like there are at least fifty versions of “Beautiful” released every year.
