40. Miss Americana finds Taylor looking backwards, wondering what her high school life would be like if she had met Joe all the way back then. That she is dreaming about showing him off here, at a state fair for teenagers, instead of somewhere like the Met Gala shows just how strongly the old Taylor came back from the ashes.

39. Wildest Dreams, like a lot on 1989, has Taylor entering a new fling and wondering about the end just as the good parts are starting. But she’s OK with it, this is pre-Lover and nothing lasts forever. I love how this song continues to elevate itself throughout, starting as a simple piano ballad but then has you rocking your head back and forth during that huge bridge and final chorus.

38. This is an anthem for being young and doing whatever the fuck you want, and not letting any jerk exes bring down your good vibes. And 22 is the perfect age for that attitude. It’s the year people think they have things figured out, but it’s not too late to realize you’re wrong and try something else. Imagine if Taylor had married Harry or John Mayer during this stretch - yuck!

37. Back To December is the first official time, on record, that Taylor ever apologized to anyone and takes responsibility for the end of a relationship. This is supposedly written about Taylor Lautner AKA Wolf-boy from Twilight. I imagine she got a little tingly every time he took his shirt off in the movie and made Taylor wonder ‘hmmm maybe I should’ve stayed on that a little while longer.’

36. Picture is the only song from the first album to make the cut. I did like the first album more than ever on this most recent listen though. It’s still weird listening to ‘upcoming country girl Taylor’, these overly earnest folksy songs don’t match up at all with what she would become. But they work on their own, especially this one with its ‘I’m over you now’ huge hook.

35-31 later!

how DARE you.

I've always been curious how she escaped the death spiral that is country music and skyrocketed to what she now is. So many other country artists just flop trying to go pop or just are forgotten because they're all the SAME.

This is modern country music in a nutshell

Should've Said No and A Place In This World were my other close calls from the first album.

I've been trying to be more tolerant towards country in recent years, even finding a country album I like once a year or so. But chippy is right that is all just so samey and boring. Beer Never Broke My Mundanity. Taylor stopped being country on album #2.

More songs coming.

35. Dress is basically about wanting to fuck and not being able to, because you’re in public or some other overcomable obstacle. But then eventually you do, and the anticipation made it all the better. Though I do question the frugality of only buying a dress to take it off. If Taylor is gonna get into politics she might wanna learn how to manage a budget better than that.

34. Even though she is more secure than ever in her romantic life, Taylor still has her doubts and she knows the spark has always flickered out before, so maybe it will again. So what would that feel like, should it ever happen? Well, death by a thousand cuts. Around cut 8 I’d be like alright, I’m done but then there’s 902 to go, so I suppose this long and painful process could indeed be the worst way to go.

33. A title so good, the biggest film of all time needed to use it as well. Taylor doesn’t do features often, and I can’t her ever letting anyone dominate a song like Sheeran does here (Everything Has Changed is a quality tune though). And having Future open it up really sets it up as a stadium anthem, and in hindsight actually reminds me of Ed’s ‘songwriting contest’ scene in Yesterday. Just three people, a title and 90 seconds.

32. Taylor may not be the best at picking her first single, but she always brings it with the opening track of the album. Welcome To New York, like all it’s peers is a preview of the album to come and is such an ear worm that the beat will play in your head while you decide whether it is great or not.

31. I just went to a wedding and its too bad they didn’t know about this song yet cause I imagine it would be very romantic. Lover will surely be a staple at all such ocassions in the future, along with private dances on Valentine's day with people who probably don’t fit the description of the song but no one will care in the moment.

Four new songs so far.. And very light on the oldest stuff in general, but that will certainly change, except for the already mentioned lack of anything else of album #1. No more updates tonight. Fear Inoculum is released at midnight and I'm not listening to anymore music until then. :)

For reals, those 3 are likely top 15 for me.

Still, mass respect to what you're doing here. I love seeing the Taylor love!

Wow I guess I'm the only one who thinks the first album is "just fine'. I knew KJ loved Red but now we know where its heart truly lies - extra young Taylor.

Update coming soon.

30. New Romantics was originally just a bonus track, which in the five years since its released has already become an outdated concept. There really isn’t much consequence to having an album be long in the streaming era, so artists are encouraged to just throw everything they have on the table. I had listened to the bonus tracks (which also include Wonderland and You Are In Love) half-heartedly at first. But apparently this song caught on enough to catch her attention, and Taylor ended up releasing it as the final single from 1989. Now I can’t even imagine a world without heartbreak being the national anthem.

29. All Too Well might just be her best work of songwriting. Usually Taylor focuses on either the start of a relationship or the end of one. This song actually goes one in its entirety, detailing all the good and the bad. The music slowly rises throughout the song too, making this one a true epic.

28. Album #2 era Taylor was definitely into the princess fantasies, little did she know she would actually achieve the American equivalent of it. White Horse is almost a satire of these fantasies though. She sees that her desire to have a perfect prince is basically the same as drunk goggles, making these losers who claim to love her seem like the greatest thing in the world.

27. You know you have found a good one when you start adding sexy jazz music into your love songs. And she is breaking the second commandment too! How far this country girl has come. The good news is that since she was already going to hell for the gay pride song, False God might actually impress the lord enough to let her slide through anyways.

26. I’ve already mentioned that Taylor is great at choosing opening songs for her albums, but she might be even more gifted at choosing the closing songs. Long Live is about Taylor’s most positive relationship - the one with her fans. That she takes a moment now and then to show her gratitude, which always seems sincere, is part of why her appeal has lived on so long. A decade later this song stands as true as ever and I really think she should end all of her concerts with it.

Now that is a strong group of songs right there. Is it even possible to have 25 more that are even better? Only one way to find out...
