Apple's 100 Best Albums
They are doing 10 a day for the next ten days. You don't see all time lists like this posted much anymore since someone always gets mad about them. I'm expecting this list to be very safe and clean but maybe they will surprise me.
First ten:
100. Body Talk - Robyn 99. Hotel California - Eagles 98. Astroworld - Travis Scott 97. Rage Against The Machine - RATM 96. Pure Heroine - Lorde 95. Confessions - Usher 94. Untrue - Burial 93. A Seat At The Table - Solange 92. Flower Boy - Tyler The Creator 91. Listen Without Prejudice - George Michael
First 6 are solid picks.

Re: Apple's 100 Best Albums
It’ll be better than Pitchfork type shit at least. Beyoncé will probably get overrated.

Back In Black - ACDC 89. The Fame Monster - Lady Gaga 88. I Put A Spell On You - Nina Simone 87. Blue Lines - Massive Attack 86. My Life - Mary J Blige 85. Golden Hour - Kacey Musgraves 84. Doggystyle - Snoop Dogg 83. Horses - Patti Smith 82. Get Rich or Die Tryin - 50 Cent 81. After The Gold Rush - Neil Young BIB, Fame Monster, Doggystyle, Golden Hour, Get Rich all great. Not sure if I've heard the Massive Attack album. All I remember from them is the theme song to House.

Re: Apple's 100 Best Albums
My holy trinity of pop albums in late 2000s was Fearless, The Fame Monster and Animal/Cannibal

Re: Apple's 100 Best Albums
Day 3:
80. Marshall Mathers LP - Eminem 79. Norman Fucking Rockwell - Lana Del Ray 78. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John 77. Like A Prayer - Madonna 76. Un Verano Sin Ti - Bad Bunny 75. Supa Dupa Fly - Missy Elliot 74. The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails 73. Aja - Steely Dan 72. SOS - SZA 71. Trans-Europe Express - Kraftwerk
Lana over Shady is the first big WTF moment and then somehow got even wackier with the very very recent Bad Bunny and SZA(though both of these albums are very good.)
MMLP and Downward Spiral are both all time top 25 for me though, so I guess we still winning even if its less so.

Re: Apple's 100 Best Albums
I find Lana to have 2 amazing albums (Born to Die and Norman Rockwell) and then all her other ones to be utterly boring.

Re: Apple's 100 Best Albums
Day 4:
70. Straight Outta Compton - NWA 69. Master of Puppets - Metallica 68. Is This It? - The Strokes 67. Dummy - Portishead 66. The Queen Is Dead - The Smiths 65. 3 Feet High and Rising - De La Soul 64. Baduizm by Erykah Badu 63. Are You Experienced - Jimi Hendrix 62. All Eyez On Me - 2Pac 61. Love Deluxe - Sade
-Some more great choices interspersed amongst some electronic and r&b albums. I'd go Ride the Lightning over Puppets, but I get that Master (master!) is having a moment right now thanks to Stranger Things. No random new albums in this lot, though it does still manage highlight exactly how random stuff like Solange was in making it on in the first place lol.

Day 5:
60. The Velvet Underground and Nico - The Velvet Underground 59. AM - Arctic Monkeys 58. Whats the Story Morning Glory - Oasis 57. Vodoo - Dangelo 56. Disintergration - The Cure 55. Anti - Rihanna 54. A Love Supreme - John Coltraine 53. Exile On Main Street - The Rolling Stones 52. Appetite For Destruction - Guns n Roses 51. Sign O the Times - Prince
More good stuff here but hard to care about old albums when there are 2 new awesome ones out in the wild today.

Day 6:
50. Hounds of Love - Kate Bush 49. The Joshua Tree - U2 48. Paul's Botique - Beastie Boys 47. Take Care - Drake 46. Exodus - Bob Marley 45. Homegenic - Bjork 44. Innervisions - Stevie Wonderr 43. Remain In Light - Talking Heads 42, Control - Janet Jackson 41. Aquemini - Outkast
Drake in the top 50 is lol, otherwise mostly good choices. Going wih Aquemini over Stankonia might be controversial but I have no problems with it.

Re: Apple's 100 Best Albums
No update today I guess.
My fav U2 albums are War and All That You Can't Leave Behind. Not sure I'd have either on my top 100 though.

Re: Apple's 100 Best Albums
Oops I guess they did update yesterday after I left.
Day 7:
40. I Never Loved A Man the Way I Love You - Aretha Franklin 39. Illmatic - Nas 38. Tapestry - Carole King 37. Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) by Wu-Tang Clan 36. Beyonce - Beyonce 35. London Calling - The Clash 34. It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back - Public Enemy 33. Kid A - Radiohead 32. Ready To Die - Notorious BIG 31. Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morrissette
Wow, not only did Beyonce miss the top thirty, but they correctly put her self titled 2013 release as her best instead of the good, but inferior, Lemonade. Good job, Apple. Also good job on Nas, Wu, Clash, PE, Radiohead, Biggie and even Alanis.

Re: Apple's 100 Best Albums
Day 8
30. When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? - Billie Eilish 29. Low End Theory - A Tribe Called Quest 28. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd 27. LZ2 - Led Zeppelin 26. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West 25. Kind of Blue - Miles Davis 24. Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie 23. Discovery - Daft Punk 22. Born To Run - Bruce Springsteen 21. Revolver - The Beatles
Well they had at least one more New Album that is way higher than anyone expected haha. I think Billie's new album is better. Otherwise, tons of heavy hitters off the board. Glad that Kanye still got on despite his antics.

Re: Apple's 100 Best Albums
Vote splitting for Abbey Road and Sgt. Pepper may have led to Beatles falling out of Top 20 (same with Radiohead and others without consensus magnus opus. Compared to say like Adele fans would all get behind one album 21 to push that to a higher ranking,

Re: Apple's 100 Best Albums
Day 9:
20. Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys 19. The Chronic - Dr. Dre 18. 1989 - Taylor Swift 17. Whats Going On - Marvin Gaye 16. Blue - Joni Mitchell 15. 21 - Adele 14. Highway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan 13. The Blueprint - Jay-Z 12. OK Computer - Radiohead 11. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
Ehhh, as much as I love OK Computer I would have preferred only having one per artist. Most of the top ten will probably be repeats now.
Hard rock really got screwed over on this list. I get that they wouldn't have all my favorites, but Toxicity and Hybrid Theory both missed out? Weak.

Re: Apple's 100 Best Albums
Whats Going On was my original pick for #1. Now I'm thinking its gonna be a hip hop album, just not sure what. Maybe Stankonia now that repeat artists are allowed?

Re: Apple's 100 Best Albums
Revolver being the Beatles pick and not making top 20 never felt right. Apple list has Sgt Peppers #1 written all over it.
I wonder if they will bite on Born in the USA which is only like my 8th favorite Springsteen album.
I'll predict for top 10
The Beatles - Sgt Peppers and Abbey Road Beyonce - Lemonade Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge over Troubled Water (or Paul Simon - Graceland, but probably not both) Nirvana - Nevermind The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers Michael Jackson - Thriller Prince - Purple Rain

Re: Apple's 100 Best Albums
Think Jagged Little Pill should be higher as there would be no Adele / Swift without Alanis.
Bodyguard, Lauryn Hill, Thriller, Nevermind, maybe Shania, Britney and Spice Girls in top 10?

Re: Apple's 100 Best Albums
10. Lemonade - Beyonce 9. Nevermind - Nirvana 8. Back To Black - Amy Winehouse 7. Good Kid, Mad City - Kendrick Lamar 6. Songs in the Key of Life- Stevie Wonder 5. Blonde - Frank Ocean 4. Purple Rain - Prince 3. Abbey Road - The Beatles 2. Thriller - Michael Jackson 1. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill - Lauryn Hill
...........
I knew the #1 artist would be black, there was never any doubt about it, but never would have guessed that 7 of the top ten would be R&B albums (or at least RB adjacent like Lauryn.) Wow. I guess all other genres of music really suck huh?
Overall still a fun project to follow along with even if they completely fumbled at the end.

Re: Apple's 100 Best Albums
They had been doing a good job not pandering too much but fell apart at the end. I think just putting Thriller and Purple Rain top 2 would've been good enough if they wanted to make minority topped list.

Re: Apple's 100 Best Albums
I don't mind the Lauryn Hill pick. Wouldn't make my list but its unique and cool. Lauryn is still relevant in 2024 even though she has released zero new albums in the last 25 years.
Frank Ocean and Amy Winehouse being in the all time top ten is the crazy talk part.
