Re: The Algren Top 50
So you definitely favor album tracks over singles and I'll need a refresher on a few of these. Also about half a dozen artists I've never heard at all.
Notes;
Deer Dance is fricking awesome and is my second favorite System track. They like to push the weak around!! Spiders is pretty damn cool too.
Map of the Problematique was initially my favorite song off the Black Holes album. Still love it.
Clocks and God aren't my favorite Coldplay tracks, but I enjoyed those performances over both of my favorite songs when I saw them live last weekend. Charlie Brown and Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall were really dope too.
Otherside and Aeroplane are my favorite Chili tracks besides Tell Me Baby.

Re: The Algren Top 50
Well, I never really thought about it, but I guess the singles are chosen to appeal to the most amount of people, not necessarily the best songs. But also, I know that I prefer long tracks (probably why I love trance) and they never release long tracks as singles.

Ha, Babylon Zoo are a real deep cut from the Britpop/Britpop-adjacent annals. From roughly the same shelf as Menswear and Echobelly.
It is a good song. I understand why it was a relatively huge hit.

Williams is such a mum favourite, but much like Savage Garden, he rubbed off on me. "Old Before I Die" is another great track of his, as is "Angels".
Nice. This is one of three peak Robbie Williams songs from the early 00s I still love - the other two being Come Undone and Supreme.

Listened to 52 and 51. I admit to being a guy who likes UB40 but really only know them from their "Red Red Wine" type hits and Live 8. "King" was good though!
I feel like I've heard Sinnerman before and the video makes me think it was from the Miami Vice movie. Another good song.

I know what I should've done; The Algren Top 50 Rock Songs, because nobody cares about dance music on KJ, and at least that way I could have included many more songs from many more artists. Ah well. Might include a few at the end that would have made the if not for the electronica.

I thank my Mum for me knowing every UB40 song.
Yeah, "Sinnerman" is a Nina Simone song. Widely known. But I prefer the remix from Miami Vice.

Yeah. Most people only really liked the beginning, but as you say it is an underrated song which is unfairly looked back on with embarrassment.

I love the new music I'm hearing through these threads, maybe not all my style, but this just gives me some direction to new sounds, as I would not willingly look them up.

"Seven Nation Army" - The White Stripes
I used to dislike this track back in 2003, and ever since it has grown on me and I appreciate it very much.

Re: The Algren Top 50
SNA is still great even though becoming the fight song for every sports team has made it kinda corny. Can someone tell the Warriors that they ARE the seven nation army?
#50 "Dead Souls" is something I haven't heard in many many years, maybe since high school? Still a good track though I obviously think NIN have done alot better.
#49 "Forbidden Love" is ... ok? I've never gotten into Madonna despite the influence shes had on so many modern artists. "Ray Of Light" is the best

Beside the fact there's no excuse not to get into Madonna, I don't know which Forbidden Love Algren put as the video doesn't play for me.
Personally I prefer Forbidden Love from Bedtime Stories. It's very simple lyrics wise and I love the chant in the background (Don't go near the fire, don't go in the dark, don't give into your desire, because he's going to break your heart) during verses as they're the polar opposite of what she's doing in the song. It's like a little voice in your head you choose to ignore and you just go and risk everything for lust and desire. That little element give the song a rather unique twist and makes it intriguing.
COADF Forbidden Love is thematically the same, lyrically even more simple. It has a nice tune, but it's not even one of the strongest cuts from COADF IMHO, let alone from all of Madonna's career. I'm not sure if Algren capped one song per artist in his list. If not I hope another Madonna song pops on the list.

Again, not the best Madonna for me, but she does hit covers (and samples too) out of the ballpark nearly every single time.
