Hmm tough list to make. I find it harder to compare old/new games to old/new movies and music. It's not just about what gameplay holds up, but how you felt at the time. And also, it's only recently that I've been in the position to buy/play whatever I want, so my views of past work might be skewed by that and something that seemed great at the time was only so because it was available. Also, there's a game like Skyrim, who has a very strong case for #1 based on the latest version, but we can't forget that game was broke as fuck when it was released.

All that being said, I'll obviously still make the list cause that's what I do. :shades:

1. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES)
2. Civilization V (PC)
3. Mass Effect 2 (PS3)
4. Overwatch (PS4)
5. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (PS3)

6. Pokemon Silver (GBC)
7. Dark Souls (PS3)
8. Super Mario World (SNES)
9. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2)
10. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3)
11. Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back (PS1)
12. Super Smash Bros Melee (GC)
13. Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS4)
14. Resident Evil 4 (PS2)
15. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (SNES)

16. World of Warcraft (PC)
17. Mario Kart 8 DX (NS)
18. WWF No Mercy (N64)
19. Borderlands (PS3)
20. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)
21. Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
22. Megaman X (SNES)
23. Rocket League (PS4)
24. Spyro The Dragon (PS1)
25. Super Mario 64 / Paper Mario (N64)

Not included: Hades and Last of Us 2 - too new, but I'd expect both to be on here at some point.

Great list. Pretty extensive. My all time selection is based on how I felt at the time. Playing Goldeneye 007 or Mario 64 TODAY, for example, would be very different based on the distractingly poor graphics. At the time the excellence of those games was enough to bring tears to the eyes. The gameplay of all these games still holds up.

Strangely enough I've never played the original Goldeneye!

Perfect Dark was my shit though. Would have been a worthy addition if I went farther than 25.

I think Kart 64 would still play decently, but I went with 8 because of how it has become my go-to travel game.

Post subject:  Re: Greatest video games of all time

I only really care about N64, Snes and Lucasarts adventure games

1. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest
2. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
3. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
4. Mario 64
5. Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
6. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
7. Super Smash Bros (N64)
8. Chrono Trigger
9. Earthbound
10. Mario RPG
11. The Curse of Monkey Island
12. Day of the Tentacle
13. Diddy Kong Racing
14. Banjo Kazooie
15. DK64
16. Grim Fandango
17. The Dig
18. Heroes of Might and Magic III
19. The Secret of Monkey Island
20. Final Fantasy 9

HM: Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1/2, Paper Mario, Super Mario World, Goldeneye, No Mercy, Wrestlemania 2000, Mario Kart (64), Pokemon Snap, Starcraft, Conker's Bad Fur Day, The Sims, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Gauntlet Legends, Diablo II

For some reason I don't care about Donkey Kong Country 1 or 3 but 2 is a masterpiece.

I used to think Banjo Kazooie was the best collectathon game but both it and DK64 don't hold up quite as well as I thought, I now respect Mario 64 more for its greater platforming.

It's hard to rank ones like Smash Bros, Mario Kart and Goldeneye due to multi player being such a big part of it, however Smash Bros brought me probably the most enjoyment of anything.

Are we talking about personal list or innovation? I mean you can't throw Goldeneye in without first mentioning Doom and Mario Cart for the multiplayer and POV formats. I'll go personal. Some of these might be the wrong number. Just assume I know which one is should be. This is a very hard list, the only way to do it is to just wing it.

1. Metal Gear Solid (PS1)
2. Super Mario Brothers 3
3. Resident Evil 2 (PS1)
4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (X-Box)
5. Mike Tyson's Punchout (NES)
6. Doom (PC)
7. Goldeneye (64)
8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 (NES/Arcade)
9. Halo 2 or 3
10. Madden Football
11. Mario Cart
12 Grand Theft Auto 3
13. Super Smash Brothers
14. Paperboy (NES)
15. Tetris
16. Left 4 Dead
17. Command and Conquer
18. Assassin's Creed
19. Legend's of Zelda
20. Pac-Man
21. Sonic the Hedgehog
22. Mortal Kombat
23. Worms Armageddon
24. Star Wars: Battlefront (I think I spent an entire year in Cloud City multiplier, lol)
25. Gangsters: Organized Crime (PC)

Post subject:  Re: Greatest video games of all time

This is decidingly more difficult to do than a top movies or music or whatever list. But I'm going the "what do I enjoy/play more now" approach.

01. Tales of Symphonia (GC)
02. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (NS)
03. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
04. Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver (DS)
05. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GC)
06. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (Wii U)
07. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (NS)
08. Splatoon 2 (NS)
09. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (NS)
10. Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition (NS)
11. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
12. Pokémon Fire Red/Leaf Green (GBA)
13. Hades (NS)
14. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
15. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition (NS)
16. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD (Wii U)
17. Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS)
18. Pokémon Black/White (DS)
19. Super Mario Odyssey (NS)
20. Super Smash Bros. Melee (GC)
21. Mario Party Series (Multi)
22. Sid Meier's Civilization VI (NS)
23. Okami (Wii)
24. Metroid Prime Trilogy (Wii)
25. Animal Crossing: New Horizons (NS)

While doing this, several older games (80s/90s) got bumped off since the last time I compiled a list (over 10-years ago). I've either replayed them since and didn't enjoy them as much, or I've simply played better games since then.

And I have played the original game of any Definitive Edition or remake on the list, but I generally find most remasters better and listed them over the originals (unless they're basically the same).
Also, I kind of cheated and listed all the Mario Party games together. But if I had to pick just one, then I'd go with 3.

And Flava'd, WWF No Mercy barely missed my list (27th). I played it for the first time in like 15 years a couple years ago and it still holds up. Still the best wrestling game ever.

I love the Nintendo representation on many of these lists. In my opinion, they represent the cream of the crop in terms of innovation, creativity, and careful stewardship of their franchises. Speaking of franchises, I'm still waiting for Star Fox and 3D Donkey Kong games!

Someone mentioned Perfect Dark. So many great memories with that game. Playing against the bots or torturing players with your remote turrets made for a lot of fun filled weekends. Halo 2 was another great multiplayer game back in the day.

Conker's Bad Fur Day! Everything Rare touched was gold. Nintendo was very smart to make them a Second Party publisher. Banjo-Tooie was great as well.

Speaking of Rare, what I would give for a modern remake of Goldeneye 007. One that is exactly like the original (I know there's an emulated version out there, I want the real thing).

Apparently there's a Perfect Dark reboot coming in 2022/2023 (Xbox / PC): https://www.gamesradar.com/new-perfect-dark-guide/

This was my list circa April 2009. My top 3 remain unchained but everything else would look different. Obviously would have a lot more games from the last 12 years in it and rank down a lot of the older games (Rock Band for instance was at #19 for me then cause I was in college and played it constantly and it wouldn't crack my top 50 anymore)

Nice to see a few mentions of the adventure/point and click games, love the format and still play them to this day (just knocked out a few I hadn't played before like Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle and The Dig this year). For non Lucasarts ones I'd like to revisit Broken Sword but I've had trouble getting a compatible version.

StarCraft and it's sequels (especially Brood War) are probably my favorite games of all time.

That Brood War campaign (that was later undermined by SC2 and it's sequels) is complete FIRE. I have never seen a side character become the focal point in a game and become "the Head queen Bitch of the universe" Like Sarah Kerrigan did at the end of StarCraft: Brood War.

The fact she didn't even appear until mission 5 in the original game but then proceeded to slay the three races by manipulation, lying and just being cruel is such a different approach than most games take with their main characters.

That a whole mission in Brood War is made to kill your own allied while they're resting is amazing.

Too bad they ruined it with s fucking space cowboy story at the end but that ride was fucking iconic.

IGN updated their list and have ... Breath of the Wild at #1. Ok then... I mean I really like it (my 2nd fav Zelda behind only Majora's Mask) but I feel like BotW is becoming The Office of video games. :funny:

Link To The Past, two Mario games and Super Metroid are also in the top ten. Hades is at #13, but actually not the highest ranked recent game which goes to Disco Elysium. I've wanted to try that but I don't stick with those isometric rpg types (quit Pillars of Eternity of Divinity 2 after only a couple hours) and thus don't wanna pay for it. Please come to Game Pass soon!

How often does IGN update their Top Games list? If it's not every year, they should have waited until Breath of the Wild 2! (Does any sequel ever have more to live up to, by the way?)

I know Disco Elysium is a popular game to stream, but I know almost nothing about it besides that. I'll look into it.

Crazy Taxi/Crazy Taxi 2 were a lot of fun. Wish it could make a comeback, or at least get some sort of HD Remake Collection or something. (The Simpsons version, Road Rage?, was fun too.) Same goes for Jet Set Radio!
