Nominations were announced today.

Game of the Year:

Control (Remedy)
Death Stranding (Kojima)
The Outer Worlds (Obsidian)
Resident Evil 2 (Capcom)
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (FromSoftware)
Super Smash Bros Ultimate (Nintendo/Bandai Namco)

Seems like they wanted to give more recognition to original games after 5/6 of last year's entries were franchises. I respect that, but Fire Emblem: Three Houses wasn't the one to leave out. :(

Hard to guess who will win out of these. God of War pulled a big upset over Red Dead Redemption 2 last year. Right now I'd bet on Sekiro, as that has the same type of action gameplay (though much harder) and a similar story about using your power to protect an innocent.

My own list for 2019 (so far):

1. Resident Evil 2
2. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
3. Slay the Spire
4. Kingdom Hearts 3
5. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
6. Control
7. Borderlands 3
8. Katana Zero

Smash came out in 2018 but I'd throw that in there too.

Out of the choices given, Resident Evil 2 remake is an easy winner for me. Even though the story has been done before, it's a new experience with the updated engine from Biohazard. Making it easier and more fun to shoot zombies doesn't take away from the survival horror experience though. Ammunition is scarce, and some opponents like the lickers and Tyrant are still better off running from.

Smash is great, but it's a little frustrating they locked 75% of the new characters behind DLC walls.

Sekiro is a great game, though I could never get the parrying down and only made it about halfway through. Very frustrating, more so than Dark Souls has ever been, but again I respect the effort to make something different.

Control is so much fun, but also kinda buggy and I'm surprised it made it into the top category. I'm fine with it though, summoning and then throwing chunks of a wall at the Hiss never got old.

Haven't played Death Stranding or Outer Worlds yet. Fall has been really packed and I prioritized the Switch games first since they never go on sale (DS and OW will be half off or more on Black Friday).

Supposedly May, mau, but they have pushed back the release date a few times already.

Sekiro won the big award. I’m cool with it. FromSoftware has a ton of great games this decade and deserved a win.

Xbox Series X also revealed and I hope that isn’t the final name. :funny:

Jedi Fallen Order has been quite the pleasant surprise. Respawn basically did Titanfall 3 in the Star Wars universe. The platforming parts are probably even more fun than the combat, though the lightsaber is incredibly satisfying to use. Even just whipping it out feels good ... I know Anakin would agree.

God damn if it aint buggy as hell though. Fucking EA. Could have been a 10/10 with some more polish but they had to get it out before Rise of Skywalker so no time for that. You’d think they would have learned from Mass Effect 4 and Anthem that rushing out a buggy game will slaughter all your good will on the internet, but I guess not!

Still a contender for game of the year if they can end it strongly (I’m probably 3/4ths through) and the environments of Dathomir don’t take as long to load as those on Kashyyk.
