While the U.S. flounders on environmental action and a growing number of cabinet officials out themselves as climate deniers, China continues to make waves as an emerging leader in this space.

Chinese state media announced this week that the sprawling province of Qinghai in the country’s northwest had run for seven consecutive days entirely on renewable energy. The province, which is larger than Texas, relied only on wind, solar and hydroelectric power from June 17-23, reported Xinhua. These renewable energy sources reportedly provided Qinghai and its population of 5.8 million with 1.1 billion kilowatt hours of electricity — equal to about 535,000 tons of coal.

Impressive and China continues building on a stronger domestic economy with the jobs these developments create.

I am not as impressed as you. It is still an achievement, and we should congratulate any area for using solely renewable energy, but in terms of the "record" status, Qinghai is hardly Guangdong with huge cities. It is a huge (720,000 km2) poor area near Tibet with lots of open space for solar farms and just 5.6 million people, and no where near as much demand for energy as 10.3 million strong Portugal, which is just 92,000 km2.

Well, the space is one thing, but that they've been able to get enough clean energy running to support millions of people I think that's still pretty impressive. But sure Portugal achieve it too if not better with less available infrastructure. But if China builds on this that's a pretty good thing.

Of course, it is great. Even one house using renewable energy is a good thing, let alone an entire province.

Lol what? God, China is amazing. I think a lot of countries should pick up a few good habits from them, especially in regard to modern technology. I'm just really struck by their approach to the environment. Despite everything that has happened to their country, they are trying to get better at it, and that's commendable. I don't think other countries are as enthusiastic about renewable energy as china. It upsets me the most, I can't do much for the environment, but I do my best to save energy and sort out waste. With Simply Switch, I recently switched to a renewable energy tariff.
