Member when movie soundtracks used to just be unreleased tracks from any and all of the most known artists of the day? Well, at least one movie that came out this year remembered. Will it be the winner or will it split the vote?

The nominees for best original song are:

Dance The Night by Dua Lipa (Barbie)
I Hate Myself by Florence Pugh (A Good Person)
I'm Just Ken by Ryan Gosling (Barbie)
Peaches by Jack Black (Super Mario Bros)
What Was I Made For? by Billie Eilish (Barbie)

And the KJ goes to.....

Billie Eilish! "What Was I Made For" from Barbie

Billie couldn't be here tonight, but she'd like us all to know that she is really embarassed and thinks all the other nominees deserved it more. Finneas just says "thank you."

This race was close for awhile with Im Just Ken, and there was even a moment when Peaches looked like it might sneak in there, but Billie pulled away and ended up winning with 7 votes.

Next up: Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Oh btw, I forgot to mention in the original post, but we got 18 ballots this year which is up from last year's 16.

Sometimes you want to glow up to show how your character is living at a different point in time, or how they are leaving their isolated fantasy and travelling into the real world for the first time, or you want to leave humanity behind and become an alien, or you just want award voters (like us) to see how super seriously you want to win. We all have our reasons, but who was the best resultt?

The nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling are....

Barbie
Maestro
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Oppenheimer
Poor Things

And the KJ goes too....

Ivana Primoric for

Barbie!

Poor Things shot out to a huge lead here, but Barbie slowly and steadily took the lead with 7 votes.

Next award will be Best Visual Effects!

In a strange way, visual effects actually took a step backward at the start of the year with an embarassment that I won't mention ... actually, nm, lets just call a spade a spade and say Ant-Man's FX were really bad. Yeah, I'm talking about you Kang. Have fun not being the next Avengers villain!

Luckily, that trend did not take for the rest of the year and instead we got some fanastic effects both digital and practical. And best of all, some of these movies did it on a reasonable budget.

Here are the nominees for Best Visual Effects:

The Creator
Godzilla Minus One
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning
Oppenheimer

And the KJ goes too...

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning

Pretty surprising result as the nomination round suggested Guardians would run away with this one, and then getting snubbed in BP made me think it's win was even more likely. But I guess, in retrospect, Tom Cruise was not going to just walk away from this without any awards after Top Gun: Maverick did so well last year. Godzilla Minus One actually made a run at the end, which is deserving, I just didn't think enough people saw it lol. Well, I guess they didn't since DR beat both of them 5-4-4.

Next we shall do Best Art Direction and Set Design

Designing sets seem like it would be either really fun or really stressful. Really fun because you are creating your own world, really stressful cause you have to worry about things like blocking, actor placement, how the colors will look on camera, etc... Actually, I'm already exhausted thinking about it so lets just focus on the people who do it well.

The nominees for Best Art Direction and Set Design are...

Across The Spiderverse
Barbie
Oppenheimer
Poor Things
Saltburn

And the KJ goes too...

James Price and Shona Heath for

Poor Things!

Poor Things was able to hold its lead here, beating Barbie 8-5. And well deserved as every destination of Bella's odyssey feels immaculately constructed.

Next ... let's do a more fun one with Funniest Comedy

Knock Knock

Who's there?

The nominees for Funniest Comedy

There's no need to finish the joke because a) I got nothing and b) these movies are funny enough and don't need any additional humor.

The nominees for Funniest Comedy are

Barbie
Bottoms
No Hard Feelings
Poor Things
Saltburn

And the KJ goes too...

Barbie!

Well deserved win. I know some might say it is more of a socially conscious-fantasy movie, but the humor is what took Barbs to heights no one could have dreamed of. Getting the team behind Frances Ha to do a Barbie movie is a hilarious idea in itself that panned out very well. Fans of the more pure comedy No Hard Feelings will have to settle for second place as Barbie trumped it 7-5.

Next up we will go back to the techs with Best Costume Design.

I always think back to Kill Bill Vol 2 where Bill is explaining how "Clark Kent is the mask that Superman wears." Not sure how it applies to these films, but its such a good scene.

Though it also makes me wonder how the main characters of these films would take the 5 point exploding heart technique.

The nominees for Best Costume Design are:

Barbie
Killers of the Flower Moon
Maestro
Oppenheimer
Poor Things

Holly Waddington for

Poor Things!

Poor Things and Barbie continued their rivalry among the tech categories with their closest battle yet of 9-8 (only one other movie received a vote but I won't say what it was for the purposes of mystery.) Either one would have been a worthy winner in my eyes.

Will switch it up for the next one so we can have a winner that isn't Barbie or Poor Things .... lets go Best Foreign Language film.

Just wanted to start this category by saying I watched El Conde (from Spencer director Pablo Larraine) last night and thought it was wonderful. Definitely would have voted to nominate it here had I seen it in time. Hell, I didn't even know it existed until long after my ballot was done. Bad job by you, Netflix promotional team.

However, I dunno what would have to fall out for El Conde to make it in. Very strong year for foreign films.

The nominees for Best Foreign Film are:

The Boy and The Heron
Godzilla Minus One
Past Lives
Where Evil Lurks
The Zone of Interest

Past Lives!

Yes, half of the movie is in English, but the better half is in Korean so I'm good with this win. Godzilla never really had a chance, tying with Zone of Interest at 3 votes while Past Lives soared ahead with 8.

As gigantic tvs become more affordable for the everymans and everywomans of the world, the SOUND is really what sets the theater experience apart from the home viewing (and being forced to stay off your phone for 2 hours lol). I just can't quite crank it as I'd like to at home without bothering the entire neighborhood who already protests my very loud screaming metalcore music. Speaking of: hey Siri, play some Northlane while I wait for the next game to start.

The nominees for Best Sound are:

Across The Spiderverse
The Creator
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning
Oppenheimer
The Zone of Interest

My eyes see

Oppenheimer

Come on, you didn't really think Oppy was gonna get shut out of the tech categories did you? The sound is what helps make this 3 hour biography about people who do math into a worldwide blockbuster. Also, I felt it best to just get the Al Pacino joke out of the way early.

Short 5-10 minute break, then we will go for Scariest Horror!

I basically just said "be right back" right before announcing the nominations for horror. Major mistake. Randy would be so disappointed.

Here are the nominees for Scariest Horror:

Godzilla Minus One
Megan
Saw X
Scream VI
Talk To Me

Scream VI

In what could have been a nightmare for your gracious host, there was actually a 4-way tie in this category lol. Scream, Godzilla, Megan and Talk To Me all received the same amount of votes. Luckily, thanks to the unfortunate tie in BP last year I had to come up with a foolproof tiebreaker system and Scream is the first to benefit from it this year. It had 16 points in the nomination round compared to 2nd place Talk To Me which only had 14. By far the closest category ever in the 3 years I've hosted this.

Next up: Breakthrough of the Year!

Our version of the best new artist highlights who was mostly unknown at this time last year, but whose name is now known by anyone in the biz.

The nominees for Breakthrough of the Year are:

Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon)
Charles Melton (May December)
Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers)
Celine Song (Past Lives)
Sophie Wildie (Talk To Me)

Lily Gladstone!

Not my vote but I think its the right pick as she should be the one who benefits the most in the short term from her breakout role. Melton and Song tied for second place with a final count of 6-4-4 in Lily's favor.

Lets go for Best eDiting next!

We're in the upper half of the ballot now! The ones before people start getting burnt out. Which, btw, is a previously thankless task. So let me take the time to thank everyone for filling out the very long ballot as I know it takes your time as well.

Oh, I'm hearing a studio mandate that we have to cut 25 words out of the broadcast, so let me go and redact my previous statement.

The nominees for Best Editing are:

Killers of the Flower Moon
The Holdovers
Oppenheimer
Past Lives
Poor Things

Jennifer Lame, Mike Fay, Nick Ellsberg, and Tom Foligno

for

Oppenheimer

This one wasn't even close and for good reason. Would have been very easy to get lost the in the time/space jumping of Oppenheimer without high quality editing.

Next up .. Best Documentary
