Very impressive with Elder Ring! And WWE nearly at 100 hours! And where did you get the Xbox yearly stats? Just looking each game up itself?

My Nintendo Recap 2022:

Splatoon 3 - 149 hours
Persona 5 Royal - 70 hours
Triangle Strategy - 65 hours
Pokémon Scarlet - 58 hours
Splatoon 2 - 55 hours
Hades - 45 hours
Pokémon Sword - 40 hours (got the DLC this year)

Gaming Trends:

Role-Playing - 23%
Action - 21%
Multiplayer - 19%
Shooter - 16%
Adventure - 16%
Strategy - 5%

Splatoon 2 and Hades were my 3+ years of play titles. Hades will probably make 2023 too, because I've been in the mood to play it again since the Hades 2 trailer.

Yeah you just click on the game and hit stats. Didn't play too much xbox this year so it was easy to find the 5 most played.

I take personally responsibility for those 70 hours in Persona and the additional 30 or so you still have to go. :funny:

With WWE I never really play long sessions, but I guess a little bit here and there with all their different modes adds up!

I'd rank them:

1) Elden Ring - obviously
2) Death's Door - best game of last year that I played this year
3) Splatoon 3 - still fresh
4) Stray - meow
5) Vampire Survivors - way more fun than it ought to be

Really good top 5 considering how much I missed. God of War, Cult of the Lamb, Scarlet + Arceus, Triangle, Deathloop, Dying Light 2, Rogue Legacy 2, a new play of Cyberpunk and probably even more I'm forgetting.

A freakin' awesome game is what kind! Haha.

It's a roguelike, which is a dungeon crawler where you progress though procedurally generated chambers until you either die or reach the end. You're suppose to die, and you'll die a lot, as you learn how to beat the chambers. So if (when) you die really early, don't get discouraged--that's how it's designed as you learn how to defeat the enemies faster/better and which weapons fit your game style (range vs up close, for example).

Every run is unique and rewards you so it doesn't feel "pointless."

As you die, in Hades at least, you carry over the various currencies and other items you find through your run that you can use to pay for permanent upgrades (e.g. more health, highest % chance of rare boons from the Gods you encounter, etc.) that will help get farther in future runs. You can also upgrade the House of Hades cosmetically and purchase things that can further help you during your runs (like adding the slim chance you'll find a enemy-less health chamber to heal).

It's also story-driven which a lot of games in this genre rarely are. You won't believe much unique dialogue there is too.

I think it might be on sale right now, probably 50% off too (so $12?). I was going through the deals yesterday and saw in on there, just not the price since I already own it. I blindly bought it with almost no knowledge of it and it's probably in my all-time top 10 now.

I second everything Corpse said. It's a hard game but if you can get past that it's one of the most special we've ever seen. I've beat the game on two different systems since it came out 2.5 years ago and would've gone back for a third if they hadn't announced Hades 2 (which instantly became my #1 most anticipated game even above Tears of the Kingdom and Suicide Squad.)

1. Persona 5 Royal - 9.5
2. Splatoon 3 - 9.5
3. Immortals Fenyx Rising - 9
4. Pokémon Scarlet - 9
5. Triangle Strategy - 9

This what I'll go with as my Top 5 of 2022 (first time playing). The biggies I didn't get to (yet) being Bayonetta 3 and Mario + Rabbids: Spark of Hope. And, of course, Elden Ring.

I'm still far away from finishing Persona 5, so it could change, but I doubt it. It's addicting, engaging, and provides a balance of relaxing and challenging gameplay. And the music is phenomenal. Splatoon 3 basically perfected the Splatoon formula, improved Salmon Run and Story Mode. Fenyx Rising was the fun, open-world adventure I was searching for with a funny take on Greek Mythology with its clever witty writing. Pokémon Scarlet is full of performance issues, but none game-breaking or distracting enough to outweigh how much fun it is. Finally, Triangle Strategy provided the challenge and difficulty when needed, and offered a refined, upgraded take on tactical RPGs.

Most-Anticipated of 2023 (that I'm AWARE of and is announced):

1. Hades 2
2. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
3. Hogwarts Legacy
4. Octopath Traveler II
5. Assassin's Creed Mirage
6. Skull and Bones
7. Sea of Stars
8. Fire Emblem Engage
9. Persona 4 Golden
10. Tales of Symphonia Remastered

Top 4 are day one purchases. Others are dependent on reviews and/or just finding the time.

I need to try out World of Tanks. I’ve heard about it.

Great to see Persona at #1! I can't remember where I ranked it back in 2017, but it's crazy to think that it, Breath of the Wild and Horizon Zero Dawn all came out within about a month of each other and I still had time to buy/play them all at their release. Meanwhile, here in 2023, the mere shadow of Elden Ring has me backed up almost a year on game releases. :hahaha:

You've convinced me to get Scarlet, but I'm not sure when it will happen. A sale will probably never happen.

Just note... the performance issues have not been patched. I wouldn't be shocked if nothing of significance is actually patched because as mentioned... none of it is game-breaking or especially awful. And I imagine it'd take quite some time to fix them all throughout the game. (And they're probably focused on the DLC that'll likely launch later this year...)

They're definitely noticeable, framerate in particular, but they're more "annoyances" than glitches and such. Between me and my husband, each with ~100 hours of play, there was just one game crash between us (him, maybe since he has the OG Switch from launch day).

I'm really, really looking forward to Hogwarts Legacy next month (well, less than a month now!). I'll keep expectations in check still, but I really hope that having been in development for 6 years now, and the few delays it's had in that time, has eliminated any major bugs. It *looks* fantastic. Probably too much to ask for little/no bugs, but if they're minor at launch, I'll be satisfied. And I like to think that the staggered release between systems (current gen next month, last gen in April, Switch in July) means they've strongly considered game quality (by system) rather than just launching it on all of them at once as soon as possible for maximum, immediate sales.

And I know Rowling has been problematic, but hopefully journalists and reviewers don't let her affect their scores of the game. Especially since, based on what I've seen, preorders are very strong. That's... counterproductive and unfair to the team that has worked on it these past six years.

I wish developers would just wait to announce dates until they're quite certain they can make it, or, might only experience a slight delay.

Also... this is so accurate. If they had this in any single-player level, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

:hahaha:

Though the instrumental of Run the World is actually just the song "Pon De Floor" by Major Lazer. Splatoon 4 should just get them to do the entire soundtrack.

Also, I think that Ubisoft announced Skull+Bones just to get fans to shut up about them making a Black Flag 2. Yet they could have just made a Black Flag 2 and sold millions of copies, perhaps even leading to a Black Flag 3, in the time it's taken them to make Skulls and Bones.

Also also, I can't believe there's a new Fire Emblem in a week. Feels like there is only a small fraction of the hype that Three Houses, Fates and Awakening had.

I'm unfortunately not hyped for the new Fire Emblem at all. The fact it was randomly announced just 2 or 3 months ago being the main reason. Wish we'd gotten some sort of teaser back during E3 with maybe a coming "early 2023" date or something.

I'm interested in reviews.

82 on metacritic. Seven points lower than Three Houses, but not bad at all. Reviews say the gameplay is excellent, though the story is very meh. I can live with that. Probably won't pick it up anytime soon. Eventually!

Horizon Forbidden West is still my primary game at the moment. Making my way through it slowly but surely (about 31 hours in the month and a half since I started.) I needed a new secondary game though, since I'm feeling a burnt out with online shooters at the moment. Very nearly bought Brilliant Diamond on an impulse, but decided to go with something I already owned instead - Mario Galaxy. And gotta say, out of all 3d all stars, this one holds up the best by far. Sure, that's probably because it is newer ... Yet the graphics look like they could be any modern switch game. And the physics are still insane and have never been done better. And the most important part - I can play it with a real controller instead of the wiimote! I hated that thing so much on every game except for Skyward Sword and Sports lol. The gyroscope aiming will probably make some of the later levels more difficult than they ought to be, but I don't care. This is gonna feel like a whole new experience for a game that I never properly appreciated.

Galaxy existing is why I don't think I can ever call Odyssey the best Mario game. I don't think Odyssey raised the bar in the same way Galaxy did. Both are exceptional, of course, and I don't really think one is better than the other. They're both top-tier, but I know some consider Odyssey a sort of "upgrade" and I don't agree.

And I think Galaxy has the better music too, and one of the best soundtracks in gaming. It was the first orchestrated Mario game, and they really delivered with it.

Glad you're enjoying Horizon Forbidden West. It oddly seems to have been overshadowed due to its release date. Reviews and reception are too good to wind up being on a "lost gem" or something list in a few years.

Galaxy vs Odyssey is interesting. Galaxy has great mechanics and physics swirled together with an amazing soundtrack and (at least as far as the first one goes) a decent storyline by mainline Mario standards (albeit still super simple). My main gripe with it is its linear play style makes it feel more akin with the earlier Mario games as opposed to its 3D brethren. Odyssey on the other hand has a much better sense of adventure that I haven’t felt in a 3D platformer since Rare’s glory days mixed with a fun ending. I think the moon collecting feels a bit inconsistent as you can just buy them eventually which under hands a lot of tue game, but not enough to really impact the overall score that much.

I would have to play them back to back, but in theory I would like Odyssey more due to its more open nature, but then again World is my favorite Mario game and it is obviously a linear based platformer, so maybe I would like Galaxy more for its creativity and presentation? Hard to say.

This franchise has a bad habit of releasing the week before a game-changing open world experience. :funny:

I'll save my Odyssey v Galaxy winner for when I finish the replay. DIB is right though, they feel like very different games. But each has a strong case for being the best exclusive on its system (with only Zelda to challenge.)

Poor reviews for Forspoken... Not a huge surprise, but still a bummer since Sony was hyping it as their next big franchise. Oh well, one less game on the play list means there are only 600 left. :funny:

Also, video game sites need to stop spoiling The Last of Us show in their headlines. I already know what's gonna happen so it's not that big of a deal, but cmon, you have to directly tell people who haven't even clicked the article about a huge plot point? It hasn't even been a full day yet and, since these sites aren't usually known for television, people won't have their guards up.

I'm excited. A bit annoyed PlayStation gets the pre-order Hogsmeade quest that unlocks an in-game shop for an ENTIRE YEAR before other platform gamers can have access to it though. I was expecting a month or two, not a full twelve months.

Try to avoid social media, or at least don't actively look up anything related to the game. Some people received the art book super early and images have found there way online. I haven't seen any of them at least. And I imagine some copies of the game will be released in the wild ahead of release, if they haven't already.

I'm not getting overhyped though. Having no bugs is just too much to ask, unfortunately, but if it has similar buggy issues as Valhalla, only example I can draw off of, I'll be happily satisfied. I'm not one to hate over an occasional glitch or bug as long as it doesn't impact the game.

Now to create a character name before Tuesday because I'm already going to spend up to an hour on the character creation screen.

Nice! Good choice.

I want to grab the game day one but will need to wait on user reviews. Critics won't be trustworthy on this one. I know it'll have some bugs, that is unavoidable these days, but I like they are releasing last gen / switch later on, so hopefully the PS5 / Xsex versions won't be held down.

Mario Galaxy graduated from my seconday game to primary. At 61 stars right now. The one in the desert level where you're running upside down on the sand castle was insanely fun. I didn't remember it at all.

Reviews are going to be interesting. As you said, can't rely on them in this case. I also wonder if user scores will be reliable. This feels like a prime target to get review bombed. Might have to read through the 6s-8s scores to get an unbiased opinion.

And to my knowledge, they've given gaming journalists little/no early access. Instead, the hands-on demos and previews have been for streamers and content creators. Which is pretty notable, and I wonder if they'll be more of a shift in this direction in the future.

Where have you come down on the Galaxy vs Odyssey debate now?
