BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
SCARIEST HORROR FILM

A twisted lovechild of Promising Young Woman and Get Out!
- Rahul Desai, Film Companion

With plenty of visual style and two superb lead performances, Fresh is a surprising and twisted treat of a thriller that you won't want to miss.
- Ian Sandwell, Digital Spy

A top-tier horror movie from start to finish. Your chills will get chills.
-Mike McGranaghan, Aisle Seat

It’s very ambitious and well-executed for a first-time feature film, with impressive set designs and cinematography.
- Carolyn Hinds, But Why Tho? A Geek Community

This is a searing example of sharp and intelligent filmmaking at its very best, and just happens to be intense entertainment as well.
- Wilson Kwong, Film Inquiry

In a Promising Young Woman meets Raw sort of way, this is a memorable, stomach-churning, socially conscious horror film that has something important to say.
- Louisa Moore, Screen Zealots

Fresh is one of the most twisted, original horror film I've seen. My jaw was on the floor 30 minutes in and has remained so ever since. Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones are brilliant.- Lauren Bradshaw, Fangirl Freakout

BREAKTHROUGH (Ben Aldridge)

Image

Beautiful, devastating, and achingly honest, "Spoiler Alert" is a sweet, relatable love story — with an unsurprisingly gut-wrenching ending — about the moments that give our life meaning and the sacrifices we willingly make to pursue that meaning.
- Stephanie Malone, Morbidly Beautiful

Spoiler Alert is an incredibly sweet and sincere exploration of love and relationships, and also turns out to be a touching film about found family. It succeeds in exuding what we look for most this time of year: warmth.
- Sara Clements, Pajiba

The story of Michael and Kit is beautiful and heart-wrenching. Fantastic casting and performance by Jim Parsons and Ben Aldridge. Bring tissues with you because you will end up in tears.
- Wendy Lee Szany, The Movie Couple

Spoiler Alert is funny but not forced. Tragic but not overwrought. Romantic but not unrealistic. It hits all the beats in each of its genres while delivering a satisfying albeit devastating tragi-rom-com that says love is worth the pain.
- Karl Delossantos, Smash Cut Reviews

To the film’s credit, it never wallows in false sentimentality or asks us to feel pity for these characters. I’d say more, but I don’t want to spoil the ending.
- David Lewis, San Francisco Chronicle

BREAKTHROUGH (Cooper Raiff - Actor/Director/Writer)

Cha Cha Real Smooth is the smash hit of Sundance 2022 – a charming crowdpleaser with a sensitive and side-splitting script and an exceptionally cast ensemble (including a career-best Dakota Johnson).
- Zoë Rose Bryant, Loud and Clear Reviews

It’s Johnson who just steals this film. It’s Domino who is endlessly interesting, surprising, and maturely written–and the actress just runs with the role.
- Dan Buffa, Dose of Buffa

Do not miss this movie. It is the sleeper hit of the year. To see it is to love it. Dakota Johnson's talent has risen to the top.
- Jackie K. Cooper, jackiekcooper.com

The sophomore film and Sundance favorite from Dallas native Cooper Raiff is funny, sentimental, and proves that he’s one to watch.
- Joe Friar, Fort Worth Report

Cooper Raiff's direction is incredible, and he has so much charm as an actor. Dakota Johnson continues to impress, and this film nails almost every emotion it goes for.
- Austin Burke, Austin Burke/Flick Fan Nation

There’s an ache to the story of Cha Cha Real Smooth that’s highly relatable for anyone who struggled to find their way in their twenties. In the able hands of a filmmaker like Raiff, the movie is one that opens and breaks your heart in equal measures.
- Alex Bentley, CultureMap

Cooper Raiff is the fresh comedic talent we’ve been waiting for.
- Johnny Oleksinski, New York Post

Having several well-known actors in the cast may help sell this modest indie title to wary viewers but after seeing it I predict that people will be reacting as I did, talking about the wondrous achievements of Cooper Raiff

I hate that I can't even recommend one of my favorite four films in Weird since it is stuck on the horrible Roku Channel. I assume everyone who is remotely interested in Turning Red or Batman has already seen it. So if anyone needs one more movie to watch, just focus on The Menu, on HBO. The best movie on the best streamer, just like last year. As a matter of fact, even though its not eligible, everyone should watch The Suicide Squad again just for a reminder of how great it was. :D

With a powerhouse performance from Thandiwe Newton, God’s Country builds its way up to a gut-punch ending. Newton is synchronized with every step of Sandra's agonizing journey and sells the final shot for all it’s worth.

Its status as a social media metaphor is perfectly integrated into a gory, funny, fiendishly clever plot with an audaciously outré twist-ending to boot.

One of the most searing indictments of the social media age and its effects on young people I’ve ever seen.

'Triangle of Sadness' satirizes high society's self-obsessed elites, making for a side-splitting, vomit-spewing, hilariously unhinged time.
- Morgan Rojas, Cinemacy

The title doesn’t effectively sell how chaotically funny and eviscerating Ruben Ostlund’s social satire is.
- Wenlei Ma, News.com.au

Triangle of Sadness is the near perfect Dark Comedy! Balancing tone, message, darkness of human nature and equally being one of the funniest films this year!
- Samuel Leggett Jr., JVS Media & Productions/Team JVS

Ruben Östund’s audacious Palme d’Or winner skewers modern social mores in a note-perfect satire.

A smart, subversive fish-out-of-water comedy.

A thematically ambitious screenplay that cuts deep to the heart of many issues plaguing the country to this day on how disconnected we are from each other and reality itself, B.J. Novak's writing is the film's most significant asset.

JULIA STILES - BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS - ORPHAN: FIRST KILL

Image

Julia Stiles really goes for broke as the mother in this movie, which I really appreciate.
- Amy Nicholson, FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles)

Isabelle Fuhrman and Julia Stiles are electric to watch once its second act unfolds.
- Maxance Vincent, Cultured Vultures

Campy fun and a spark plug performance by Stiles who gives Fuhrman a run for her money, make this prequel a must-see. The twist is unexpected and so effective.
- Joe Friar, Fort Worth Report

Due to stellar performances from Fuhrman and Stiles, and the absurdity of the premise, Orphan: First Kill proves to be engaging enough for audiences.
- Ferdosa Abdi, Screen Rant

In Julia we trust.
- Roger Moore, Movie Nation

GABRIEL LABELLE - BEST ACTOR - THE FABELMANS

Image

When The Fabelmans focuses on the young Sammy – played outstandingly by Gabriel LaBelle – the film soars. Watching how the maestro became one of the greatest directors of all time was an absolute delight.
- Mark Johnson, Awards Daily

LaBelle approaches the role with the same wonder that Spielberg must have had as a young man. It’s a beautiful performance.
- Michael A. Smith, MediaMikes

But Spielberg’s ultimate sign of casting brilliance comes from the discovery of Gabriel LaBelle, who plays the director himself.
- Ryan McQuade, AwardsWatch

He gives the best performance in The Fabelmans, IMO. It's shocking his name wasn't thrown around more during awards season outside of "Best Young Actor" awards.

The film is anchored by a dynamic, captivating performance by Mulligan, as well as impressive work by Kazan. The supporting cast is also spot on, especially Samantha Morton and a powerful Jennifer Ehle.
- Frank J. Avella, Edge Media Network

...She Said is one of the most powerful films of the year.
- Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the Movies

"She Said" is a shattering gem of a film. Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan are both sensational!"
- Leah Sydney, Showbiz 411

She Said fits right in there with other investigative journalism-themed films like All the President’s Men, Spotlight, and Zodiac thanks to Schrader’s compelling and substantial filmmaking. Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan are exceptional... A must-watch film!
- Mark Johnson, Awards Daily

Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan are brilliant...each one navigating varying levels of doubt and tenacity, portraying real, three-dimensional people who are more than their job, but are tireless and dedicated representatives of their profession.

It's several different thoughts garbled into one paragraph.

What I was trying to say, unrelated to the awfulness of Roku Channel, was that if anyone had a desire to see Turning Red or The Batman they would have done so by now and therefore my reccomendation would mean nothing. Thus, The Menu is the only one of my favorite 2022 movies that I would suggest for people looking to catch up.
