Between star players not staying on a team for more than a few years and its best players being wasted on the Angels, Baseball does have a problem with players not becoming icons. Like Mike Trout on paper was the best player in the 2010s, but unless you watch baseball, you’ve probably never heard of him.

Like Mike Trout on paper was the best player in the 2010s, but unless you watch baseball, you’ve probably never heard of him. Trout's is hard to separate from the playoff drought and being totally generic, but a telling one to me is that Betts has been one of the next best guys after Trout and Ohtani recently but has has two World Series for major teams in the Red Sox and Dodgers (albeit one in covid year), but I'd suspect he gets recognized at a restaurant less than Jimmy Butler. Or another example I think in another era Freeman could be more iconic than he is as he's been a pretty great hitter, has that World Series and has an It factor likability wise that Trout doesn't have. When I was a kid guys like Jeter, ARod, Mariano, Pedro, Manny, Ortiz, Bonds, Randy Jackson, Clemens, etc. felt larger than life compared to today's players. There's a few like Kershaw who feel like stars, but most have been around long enough to get over in a slightly more baseball friendly era. I wonder if it's a zero sum game where it just wasn't possible for 3 sports to be where NFL and NBA are in terms of water cooler status, something had to go to the NHL tier of having a core fanbase but a lot of the other people checking out until the playoffs. 20 years ago I was watching a Sportscenter I'd already seen that night because there was nothing else to do, sports is competing not just with each other but with things like Tik Tok, Twitter and Netflix now, there is less people who need to fill time which is one of MLB's best advantages.

Re: 2020 Major League Baseball Discussion
I hadn’t watched extra inning games this year and was confused at first why the Cubs and Diamondbacks were scoring so easily/fast. Ouch at 5 of 6 losses to Diamondbacks in last few weeks.

Re: 2020 Major League Baseball Discussion
Twins and Diamondbacks winning were pretty big surprises. Wildcard round was mostly a bust though with all four series being sweeps and most games being blowouts.

Didn’t think the Twins looked that scary, Blue Jays just shot themselves in the foot repeatedly.

Blue Jays haven’t been scary themselves since the days of Jose Bautista

Re: 2020 Major League Baseball Discussion
Astros continue their dynasty, lucky for them the Royals suck, they’ve been one of the last teams to hold them back (not to mention an ear sweep of them this season)

Re: 2020 Major League Baseball Discussion
The Phillies have a good team with longtime stars like Harper, Turner and Nola, I think Rangers or Diamondbacks World Series win would feel more random. Astros Phillies rematch would be fun.

Re: 2020 Major League Baseball Discussion
Diamondbacks are the random flukey team of the year. Kinda like the Nationals in 2019.

If Harper averages like 1 home run a game the Phillies have a good chance

Re: 2020 Major League Baseball Discussion
Rangers seem like they get to 7+ runs the easiest of any team I’ve seen in playoffs. Cheering for the Phillies as Rangers-Diamondbacks is a little too random for me.

2022 Rangers record: 68-94 2022 Diamondbacks record: 74-88
And one of these teams is gonna win the title? Weird. Usually there's one random team but pretty rare for it to be both.

Re: 2020 Major League Baseball Discussion
Kind of an underwhelming World Series with the Rangers and Astros Battle of Texas deciding the champion in reality. Rangers avenge 2011.
