What a game, a close as it could have been. Disappointed the Dutch couldn’t pull off the miracle comeback

I kind of wanted the Argentina Portugal final but Morocco winning is cool too.

England could have won that game, but they're England.

Ronaldo lost to both 2004 Greece and 2022 Morocco. He has been around a while.

Now we know who's up for first/second and third/fourth, I think it will go like this:

Champions: Argentina
Second: France
Third: Morocco
Fourth: Croatia

Though I hope France win.

I think France are the best team, but I'm hoping Argentina will want it more and pull out the win. As for the 3rd place, it should be tight too, but I've been impressed with Morocco and think they win this.

The greatest WC final ever imo, atleast in my lifetime.
Incredible Messi at age 35, this makes him the goat.

I wish I didn't see the score ahead of time of one of the best soccer games of all time, but happy for Messi!

Yep, all true.

I was 7 in 94 and that final kind of went past me, but it was memorable for going to penalties. 98 and 02 were pretty much no contents and not interesting. 06 started and ended with action, but was dull in between and 10 was special for me because Holland was in the final, but we didn't play well, anti-football in a way and it wasn't a good game but Spain deservedly one. 14 was a stale 1-0 win for Germany and 18 was a no contest win for France again.

This was a game that had just, a great back and forth starting deep in the second half and extra time. France ended up doing enough on Mbappe s skill to pull out a draw and go to penalties, but over the whole game Argentina played better, took the pens better and is a deserving champion. Aside from their opener loss, they played good football led by a Messi who was brilliant when he had to be.

Without looking it up, I feel there is also a narrative of big nations losing their opener and going on to win the World Cup. I want to say that happened to France or Germany before.

I remembered Spain 2010 starting slow for the favourite, I looked it up and they did lose to Switzerland first game.

I'm not buying the Messi MLS rumors, however Ronaldo going there feels right.

Post subject:  Re: The Football thread

Neither will go there, imo. Ronaldo knows that MLS is inferior and will make his career look bad, and Saudi Arabia has way more money, so failing a move to a European club he'll be heading to the Middle East.

Messi, especially having now won the World Cup, won't move to MLS. Not a chance. Any top European club would still take him, but I suspect he will stay at PSG until one of two things happens; they win the Champions League or he becomes as unimpactful as Ronaldo.
