Post The 'Weeds' Thread
For those with Showtime:

Tonight is the premiere of the half-hour dramedy, Weeds, Showtime's new take on suburban housewivery. Only this time with pot. And Mary-Louise Parker. (I actually hadn't even heard of the show till about a week ago.)

Synopsis:

After her husband's unexpected death and subsequent financial woes, suburban mom Nancy Botwin (Parker) embraces a new profession: the neighborhood pot dealer. As it seems like everyone secretly wants what she's selling -- even city councilman Doug Wilson (Nealon) -- Nancy is faced with keeping her family life in check and her enterprise a secret from her best friend/PTA president, Celia Hodes (Perkins).

It's getting mixed reviews so far: I just read reviews from the Boston Herald and San Francisco Chronicle, both of which panned it, calling it unfunny and heavy-handed. Newsweek loved it, though, calling Mary-Louise Parker's performance the best debut since Edie Falco in The Sopranos.

I'll be watching. Anyone else?

I liked it. I laughed out loud a few times and i like the characters. I like how open she is with her kids, i find it enjoyable. They have one regular viewer in me.

So now i have Entourage, The Comeback, and Weeds. I never used to watch HBO/SHO shows and now i have 3, they are filling the void that is growing over at network tv. Next season i will be watching Arrested Development, Alias, Lost, CSI, Scrubs, SVU, the Office and one new addition, Kitchen Confidential. I saw the pilot and liked it, i LOVED that there was no laugh track, laugh tracks are a tool of the devil

I am actually Dr Malcom, I AM NOT A NEWBIE. I have been coming here for a number of years, just to be clear.

I think laugh tracks can be fantastic to be honest if used sparingly
I remember noticing how Less than Perfect was kind of meh without a laugh track; then they added one and it was a lot better [because it IS after all a sitcom] but then they evolved and went too far with the laugh track; as with 8 Simple Rules - and its hurt both shows. Used sparingly its a great tool for underlining humour. But its never ever used sparingly so its a pain

Despite some iffy acting from the child actors, it was an impressive pilot.

Doesn't have the overt suburban commentary of Desperate Housewives, but in a way, I find that actually more appealing. And yes, Mary-Louise Parker is pretty awesome.

I'll be watching next week.

From Variety:

Premiere of Showtime's "Weeds" didn't spark major ratings, but skeinskein's not going to pot either.

Suburban satire, starring Mary-Louise ParkerMary-Louise Parker as a dope-selling soccer mom, attracted a total 1.39 million viewers during a Sunday sneak preview and subsequent Monday runs.

Sunday's 11 p.m. preview pulled in 538,000 viewers, which falls short of the heavily promoted premiere of "Fat Actress." But "Weeds" reached another 488,000 viewers in its regular Monday-at-10 timeslot and 367,000 for the 10:30 encore, giving it an above-average launch tally.

Showtime is giving its comedy block an extra big push, taking the unusual route of promoting and running "Weeds" and "Barbershop""Barbershop" seven nights a week (Daily Variety, June 21). Latter launches Aug. 14.

I liked the first episode it was very funny, and Mary Louise Parker is great. It's not better than ''Dead Like Me'', the humor isn't that funny, but still better than comedies from broadcast networks.

Yeah, second episode wasn't as good as the first but was still quite good. Elizabeth Perkins is really good.

I'll be watching tonight.

No one else watching? I saw the second episode. I'm not too enthralled with the show. It's nothing special, but something to watch. I kind of get a little depressed with all the "woman stressed out" shows. The only difference with Weeds is, well... the marijuana. Everything else seems typical. The only standout is Elizabeth Perkins.

I didn't like the second episode that much, but the third one was awesome... Isabelle VS. Celia was the best part of the episode... and ''I'm in the system?'' was so funny.... Also it's got to see what sort of things you can do with marijuana

I think Mary-Louise Parker is good enough on this show for some Emmy recognition.

I'd even say she's better than any of the desperate housewives.

Sunday's episode was pretty good. Odd ending, though. Plane? Coke? Cancer? Huh?

Yeah, that was very weird, it's a crazier "The Gods Must Be Crazy!"

Mary Louise Parker and Elizabeth Perkins are awesome in this show. Perkins especially and her obsession with big boobs. Heh.

I think the show has taken a turn for the better since Perkins' character's cancer was revealed and Justin Kirk came onto the show. In fact, it's been incredibly consistent since the pilot aired.

And if any episode warranted an Emmy nomination for Mary-Louise Parker, last Sunday's episode was it.

Even though I didn't see the latest episode yet (the eighth episode, I believe), I think Weeds has only gotten better and betterr with each episode. The pilot was way too meh, and I almost stopped watching. But, it has gradually gotten better and funnier.

I thought the finale was great. Best episode of the season.

Overall it was a strong first season. Not perfect, but strong.

I like it more than Desperate Housewives. Hope we get a second season.

After what I thought was a bland pilot, the show progressively got a LOT better, especially once Justin Kirk came on board. I don't think the finale was the best episode, but it was great. The only problem I had this season came in Episode 9, when Mary Louise Parker suddenly had sex with that guy (don't remember his name). I thought it was right to have her NOT have sex, being a widow and all, and having that sort of decency. But, oh well.
