Quote:
Top Gun is a 1986 American action film directed by Tony Scott, and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, in association with the Paramount Pictures company. The screenplay was written by Jim Cash and Jack Epps, Jr., and was inspired by the article "Top Guns" written by Ehud Yonay for California magazine.

The film stars Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, and Tom Skerritt. Cruise plays Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a young Naval aviator aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. He and his Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Edwards) are given the chance to train at the Navy's Fighter Weapons School. The film depicts Maverick's progress through the training, his romance with a female instructor (McGillis), and his overcoming a crisis of confidence following a fatal training accident.

REALLY overrated. It's a decent film, but not the masterpiece that many consider it to be.

7/10 (B-)

I admit, I am a sucker for fighting jets and that might have made me a bit biased towards this movie. But I enjoyed it so much. This is the best movie I know that features fighting jets, by far and away. Tom Cruise is cool as Maverick and I did like the soundtrack. The movie is not really "deep", but it is very enjoyable for what it is. One of Bruckheimer's best productions to date.

I wanted Iceman and Maverick to make out while the song "Take My Breath Away" (or "Danger Zone"...hahaha) plays, but meh.

I enjoyed it... one of the memorable 80's and Bruckheimer movies I think.

He should have spelled it Maverikk. (I've actually noticed people ripping off my spelling lately. )

Anyway, I own it, I saw it at the theaters when it came out, but I don't think it's a great movie. Pretty uneven and average.

I can never understand the love for this movie even back then. This movie was like the Fast and the Furious of the time period and spawned alot of copycats like Iron Eagle. It even packages a soundtrack that South Park mocks constantly
I truely despise this movie for giving us an actor whose claim to fame is playing cocky characters with raybans

I know I've already posted... and I still very much like this movie- even Love It - but I would remind everyone how much I love "Take my breath away" and the use of it in the movie. This movie has a wonderful, romantic, energetic feel... which is why it really is classic.

Movie = Terrible
Soundtrack = Fun

Take my Breath is awesome, and Danger ZOne is the defintion of fun 80's pop. I listen to it while working out.

Out along the edges
Always where I burn to be
The further on the edge
The hotter the intensity

Highway to the Danger Zone
Gonna take you
Right into the Danger Zone

The Most Homo-erotic movie ever made, well at least the most homo-erotic mainstream movie.

You can be my wingman anytime!! Almost seems a crime Cruise had a female love interest, just didn't fit the film very well.

And yes like Ripper said the soundtrack is pretty great.

I agree with Gulli: the homoeroticism works, the female love interest does not. Take her out, and it becomes a much better film.

I also love how uninterested Val Kilmer is with his character; you could totally tell he didn't want to do the movie.

It's decent enough but yeah the soundtrack allows you to have more fun with the film than the actual plot itself.

We're playing Drunk Gun right now. The main rule is that you must sip every single time a call name is said.

This is gonna be a long, long night on the highway to the danger zone.

Post Re: Top Gun
Finally watched this. It's difficult to grade Top Gun because I have zero interest in the subject matter. Not one ounce of this movie speaks to me in any way. I have no investment in the fighter jets, no investment in the relationship between the trainees. For me, it's just there. So I can't distract myself with dazzling special effects to ignore the god-awful human interactions. I do admit that many of the aerial shots look fantastic, even for 1986. Beyond that, Top Gun is a major misfire for me.

Why did I watch it, knowing the subject matter and my lack of interest in it? It's still considered a classic by some, and it was the top grossing movie of 1986, which stands for something. I can see why it caught on with so many, but it was a torturous experience for me. Sometimes I love something that is beyond corny, especially from the 80s, but this one just didn't cut it for me.

This was decent but when I watched this as a teenager I didn't have access to many American movies and instantly loved. It doesn't hold up very well other than the eye-candy it provides in younger Cruise at his peak and rest of the cast looking great for the camera. The soundtrack still is AWESOME and adds so much to the overall movie.

5/10

Post Re: Top Gun
With the release of the Top Gun: Maverick trailer, I thought I'd go back and give Top Gun another watch. Maverick piqued my interest, so I thought maybe I missed something on my first viewing.

Turns out, I really didn't.

So I tried to understand exactly why this movie is so well-loved and became the highest grossing film of 1986. Long story short, it's basically "America, Fuck Yeah! The Movie" for almost two hours. The whole thing plays out like an extended ad to join the Navy, complete with a soundtrack that pretty much creeps under each and every scene of the movie. Thankfully, it does boast a strong track of songs. Dare you to not tap your feet to Danger Zone.

I also can't decide if this is the most gay straight movie I've ever seen, or the most straight gay movie. There is way too much homo-eroticism just bubbling under the surface of most scenes. No complaints here, but it's filmed at times like a gay porn missing the action. But just as soon as you expect the sweaty, shirtless dudes to get it on, along comes Kelly McGillis to sweep our Tom Cruise right off his feet. It feels like the addition of this romance is tacked on long after the film was written, to appease a female audience. I guess that worked since it made a ton of 80s money. Yet it never gets off the ground at all, grounded by a lack of chemistry or interesting plot developments beyond "Oh, we should give the lead character a love story".

The film's biggest strength in the story is Anthony Edwards' Goose, his friendship with Maverick and his tragic demise in the last third of the movie. As everything else played out as a simple, straight forward "Let's show the world what we can do with our budget" visual feast, they sneak in this relatable character who reaches an untimely end, smacking us right in the feels. It's extremely calculated, and again, it works. $176 million in 1986, #1 for the year.

And of course, the jaw-dropping aerial scenes are magnificent to behold, even though I have never been a fan of the style. Quick shots of the jets zooming across the sky, inter-cut with hard camera angles on the actors' faces, have always bugged and bored me. From old war films to Star Wars to Top Gun, these scenes don't do it for me. I don't get a sense of urgency or action, I can't keep up with what's going on or who's about to die unless they PULL UP!!!, and I end up feeling left out because I understand how great the scenes play out visually. Even by today's standards, they look fantastic. But I won't let my personal choices hinder the movie overall, it did send it soaring to over $400 million adjusted and the top spot of my birth year.

Mix all these points up and you get what became the top grossing film of 1986 and the movie that, more or less, launched the career of Tom Cruise. Is it good? Not at all. I still can't understand the appeal, but thanks to everything I just wrote, I can understand why an audience in the 80s ate this up, especially on the big screen. I'm sure the theatre experience would help, especially 30 years ago. But at home, in 2019, with so many better options, Top Gun is still an overrated-yet-unashamedly silly movie.

I saw this for the first time in theaters in Dolby. It was cool to see in theaters but yeah, overall wasn't really impressed with the movie that much although I was surprised with Goose's death. I live sort of near where they filmed a couple scenes at a restaurant so maybe I'll go one of these days lol

This was the start of Tom Cruise guys, his biggest film only made 70 million at this point, it's his Independence Day. And remember to have perspective, the flying and effects like this were never seen before in a film. Add in a kick ass 80s soundtrack and America's economy in the toilet. There's a reason that the biggest movies from 85-88 were Back to the Future, Top Gun, 3 Men and a Baby, and Rain Man.

This movie has aged horribly. It is important to appreciate what it was in its day, but the bar scene where they sing etc is just cringeworthy bad.

I really like the action sequences, beyond that its pretty standard and serviceable crowd pleasing war movie schlock. I'm sure I'll enjoy the second film, the flight sequences look way more exciting than even the ones in this film.

Enjoyable action movie. Tony Scott delivers on the air sequences and musical montages and Cruise is pure charisma/starpower. I think the relationship storyline works since it adds to Maverick's character, he chases women in much the same way as he flies. Being one of the horniest females I've seen in a movie I've seen also helps restore some straightness to it as before she showed up I thought the whole movie was going to be these guys seeming like they're on the verge of banging each other. I was surprised Iceman was mostly just a nice guy, I guess it makes sense that they didn't need a cocky villain when really Maverick would have been that guy if it was told from the opposite perspective.

I always loved this film and I rewatched it again since quite a while, still a great film in itself but also quite interesting to reflect on it with its sequel in mind. The cinematography and soundtrack are excellent in this, and the cast is so good it forms into an iconic film. Cruise is magnetic, but I love Kilmer, McGillis, Edwards and Ryan in it too. Tony Scott just enables this whirlwind of action and drama into a masterpiece.
