Re: The UK Box Office Thread
Yeah, I was disappointed by The Father's UK opening to be fair, but I think its weekday performance shows that it may have some staying power, definitely one to watch for its weekend drop this weekend.

Jack Sparrow wrote: Good opening for F9 but not as huge or surprising as PR2 Indeed a great number for F9 becoming the biggest opening of the pandemic so far, 1917 which opened in January 2020 was the last film to open bigger. The Conjuring is trailing only slightly behind the last couple entries which brought in £10/11M compared to 3's £8.4M The first Peter Rabbit in 2018 brought in around £41M, so while this number during a pandemic for PR2 is surprising for the series so far it will likely end up below half of the first entry. But of course any number that reaches close to £20M during a pandemic is pretty out of the ordinary!

Re: The UK Box Office Thread
Damn PR franchise is so huge. Great for those horror sequels.
Dan what's the projection for F9 Vs F8? It's going to see a big decline I assume as well.

Re: The UK Box Office Thread
Hello all, after a couple of months of posting regular updates I'm really having fun being able to make these charts as I'm a massive statistics (and box office of course) nerd. So, I have a few plans I would like to address for the future of this thread. If there are any suggestions let me know but here is my current plan:
I'm currently working on getting all the BFI opening weekend data in one document so I can easily compare openings of films. BFI has data from late July 2001 to the present day, this is around 1,000 or so weekends of data. Currently working through early 2004 a couple of days in so this project will take a little bit so in the meantime data will be the usual weekend fare.
Phase One - July 31, 2021
Collate all opening weekend data into some decade and all-time charts, as well as yearly charts. I will also have a list of franchise openings with all entries released after July 27, 2001, the start date of the first weekend available.
Phase Two - August 31, 2021
Work through the rest of the BFI Statistics Books for any more charts that I could make for future reference.

Re: The UK Box Office Thread
Awesome to hear that Dan. Thank you for all your efforts. As for posting the charts could you please add a little more highlighters like bold or underground for every movie in the chart. Might make the posts more easily readable though as such the format is not bad but I have been diligently following your updates for long enough to easily get these charts (that night not be true for everyone).

Jack Sparrow wrote: So BW opened less than Fine in UK...ugh Yeah, but it has to be noted that the Euro 2020 finals would have made a big impact on Wednesday and Sunday. For example Another Round was up on Friday and Saturday by 3% and 23% respectively, it was heading for a weekend up 10-15%, but Sunday was down 71% from the previous week, resulting in a small 23% drop. Drops all round have been bigger this week than the previous few weeks not just due to the arrival of Black Widow but of course the final of the football. I think without football this weekend could have been £5-5.3M 3-day and £7.5-8M

I don't track football so I didn't know it's finals were this week but yeah in terms of BO yes that's a big factor in European region similar to sunny weather in Germany. Thanks dan

Re: The UK Box Office Thread
Little update on the Opening Weekends project, I'm starting on 2007 at this point, this is where the charts go weekly so every year now has 51/52 weekend charts to go over, so these years will be the longest in the process but I'm optimistic for an end of July finish.
Charts I will be bringing into my analysis when Phase One is complete.
- Monthly Charts with every film that opened in August 2001- present day, which means we will have information on the biggest openings of each month. - Franchise openings, since 27 July 2001, we will have information on how every film in franchises like Saw, Fast saga and many, many more have done for comparisons with new entries and other openings. - Yearly and All-Time opening charts.

Some Analysis from the Article
Black Widow has passed The Incredible Hulk (2008, £8.3M), Captain American: The First Avenger (2011, £10.4M) and is coming up on Thor (2011, £14M)
Old opened a lot lower than his recent non-Pandemic flicks - Glass (2019, £3.4M), Split (2016, £2.6M)
The Forever Purge is chasing grosses for The Purge: Election Year (2016, £2.3M), The Purge (2014, £3.4M) and likely can't hit the grosses of The Purge: Anarchy (2014, £4.6M), The First Purge (2018, £6M).
F9 is the sixth highest grossing Fast & Furious film below Fast & Furious 5 (2011, £18.5M)

Last weekend was affected by a major heatwave, with temperatures of 30 degrees Celcius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), so most drops were a lot higher than usual. Here in the UK, when there is some abnormally good weather the box office tends to suffer as people flock to beaches and parks rather than cinemas. This weekend there has been some good weather, but more in the lower 20's in Celcius.

Re: The UK Box Office Thread
Also, this is the 500th post in this thread so I'm going to give an update on my project.
Currently, I'm working on 2015's opening weekends, just finished August should be on track to finish by the end of July, then I shall compile the data into charts that are easy to share and analyze for the future. Probably looking at more analysis coming in the middle of August.
I have been enjoying being more active in this thread and giving out the numbers for the UK, 138 of my 184 posts have been here so I just can't seem to quit it!
If anyone has any suggestions or questions don't hesitate to ask regarding the box office or the project.
