Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Actuals (04/10-11); Charts Upd
Three more movies and entry criteria to Top 100 admissions list will be 5.5m admissions. 2 are about to break 5.5m and I'm sure one more will be added by end of this year.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Top Grossing Animated Films
Haven't updated this one in over a year, so here!

Changes versus the last update:

Well, new #1 for one! Demon Slayer, of course, takes the #1 spot.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 is up to 25th place already and will enter the Top 20. I don't want to say any higher (and 19th *should* be maximum) than that since ¥9 billion is 50/50 at best right now, and is just a very hard number to reach for a franchise animated film as you can see on the list. The biggest animated films, and overall films really, are typically original films (which Demon Slayer shattered the expectations of).

And Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur released last August (after getting delayed from last March) made the list at #92.

Top Grossing Animated Films (¥3 billion+)

001. ¥39.62 billion ($378.8 million) - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020) *178-Day Total*

Hi Corpse!

How does Monster Hunter compare to the other Paul W.S. Anderson movies?

Thanks for all your hard work!

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Actuals (04/10-11); Charts Upd
Here are all his films that have earned over ¥1 billion.

¥4.70 billion ($56.8 million) - Resident Evil: Afterlife
¥4.27 billion ($37.9 million) - Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
¥3.87 billion ($48.9 million) - Resident Evil: Retribution
¥2.85 billion ($25.1 million) - Resident Evil: Extinction
¥2.70 billion ($24.0 million) - Resident Evil: Apocalypse
¥2.30 billion ($17.9 million) - Resident Evil
¥1.95 billion ($24.9 million) - The Three Musketeers
¥1.68 billion ($16.2 million) - Alien vs. Predator

Monster Hunter is probably going to finish around ¥1.3 billion (~$12 million) or so.

He has a very good record in Japan. Japan was the biggest overall market for the last two Resident Evil films (Retribution and Final Chapter), as well as for The Three Musketeers. And Japan was the #1 overseas market for the remaining four Resident Evil films, Alien vs. Predator, and soon to be Monster Hunter. Milla Jovovich takes credit here too, since Japan is almost always the #1 overall market/#1 overseas market for her smaller releases as well. I don't know if she still does this, but she used to visit the country often, appear in commercials, do interviews, etc. on a regular basis.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Detective Conan Box Office History

In anticipation for next week (and I'll post this again next week), here's Detective Conan's Box Office History. Note that next week's film (Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet) was originally scheduled for April 2020, but got delayed to April 2021. And that was likely a great move, as going with a non-traditional month for Doraemon and Pokemon last year didn't work too well. Audiences expect them in their traditional month every year, and Detective Conan has grown so much that putting it a different month is probably too risky.

2020 was the first year though without a Detective Conan release since it began back in 1997.

For the totals, yeah. Not in the opening weekends. Only Saturday and Sunday is reported as the opening weekend in the market.

And only the last four films have opened on Friday.

How did The Fifth Element do there back in the day?

Oh, thanks, forgot to check on it.

It had a distributor income of ¥1.7 billion, so its gross was likely around ¥2.7 billion (~$22 million).

Here is Detective Conan's Friday seating/showing counts. More than 50% more seats and more than double the amount of showings versus the previous film... And each theater is showing it 19 times a day on average (second highest for any film in recorded history). Truly whopping, and around a dozen locations weren't calculated for the Friday report either (should be 260/265 with them added).

Also, this is only at the usual locations which makes up ~70% of the market. Detective Conan broke the theater count record this year and is playing in 498 theaters versus the normal 350-375 range that almost all these films played in, so the usual locations is actually more like ~55% of the market for it.

I'll update this again tomorrow when the Saturday seating/showings come out, as I suspect it'll come in a bit higher. The missing locations from Friday should be included in the Saturday report, so it may come in near 1.2 million and 5,000 showings for Saturday.

Indeed the theater count is really impressive and gives you an idea how the franchise has grown in the market.

DS is obviously out of sight, but is there a chance it might reach #2 of all time by pulling ahead of The Matrix Reloaded ? It would need to do more than ¥2,222,854,550 and 1,486,743 admissions over the 2 day period.

I can see it happening in admissions, but in revenue it's going to be very difficult. The last movie had an average ticket price over its OW of 1279 yen. With all the extra screen formats I guess we can push that up to 1300 yen for this weekend, but that means it would still need to pull over 1.71 million admissions to beat The Matrix Reloaded in revenue.

@Cynosure By looking at presales, I don't think it will cross 2 billion yen over the weekend, in my opinion something around 1.5 billion yen is more likely.

I wouldn't set expectations up to be an opening of ¥2 billion or more. Just aiming to open above the last film is already a VERY high bar (it's the third biggest opening ever for a domestic film), even if it has far more screens/showings. Having more seating doesn't necessarily equal a higher debut, especially for a franchise that has a ceiling.

Now, Detective Conan hasn't hit that ceiling yet as it's been increasing year-on-year for seven or eight years now, and it did go from being a successful franchise by earning ¥3-4 billion about every year for over 10 years, to a sudden rise in 2016/2017 by jumping over 50%, and then another sudden rise in 2018/2019 by jumping a further 30/40% from there. The last two films have earned more than double the average the films were earning before 2016.

But a ceiling has to be hit eventually, especially for a long-running series like this, even if it has seen huge gains in recent years. And the last two films have reached a level of success, especially over their opening weekends, that's very, very high for the market. Exceeding 1 million admissions over the weekend is a huge, huge accomplishment. The ceiling is likely very near. You have to sort of ignore most of the top early/mid-2000s opening weekends since they had previews (several days worth) equal to or even greater than their actual openings added to their opening weekends. What they did, such as The Matrix Reloaded, is nonstandard and that's why it held the record for 17-years (and why Demon Slayer beating it, obliterating it, is one of the biggest feats ever in the market), and why many others from that era still have high rankings on the all-time opening weekend list.

¥40 billion is 100% locked and has been for a long, long time. Getting a mere ~¥330 million more now is very easy, it's just going to take some time.

And it currently has way too many seats and doesn't need them anymore. It's not selling a lot of tickets (for 6 months in release it still is, but not relative of its seating count). At the usual locations (~70% of the market), it only sold 4.7% of all its seats yesterday. 95.3% were empty. It's still doing record amounts each day at this stage (Your Name. is the only other competitor it has that we know of), but it has a lot of seats to give up necessarily so this week. I'm a little surprised it wasn't cut a bit more, but Toho is probably just playing a little safe.

Judging from KnY's "normal" weekends (70 or so million), it can get that 330 million in five weeks or so
I think lmao

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Actuals (04/10-11); Charts Upd
Its biggest strength has really been its weekdays. It hasn't set too many very late weekend records, but its weekly totals for the past two or three months have been the highest ever recorded due to the strong weekdays. If they're not equal to/greater than the weekends, they're coming in at like 80/90% of the prior weekend gross (this week is aiming for 90%, for example).

And don't forget Golden Week from April 29th-May 5th. There's a very high chance it hits ¥40 billion near the end of the holiday period, or almost immediately afterwards.

Golden Week is set up perfectly this year for the box office since all four national holidays during the week fall on the weekdays (Thur., Mon. Tues., and Wed.), therefore all 7 days are effectively holidays with Saturday and Sunday included. Friday (April 30th) is the only one that's not a day off for everyone, but since it occurs after Showa Day (April 29th), at least some schools/businesses are likely to be closed.

And Disney "delayed" Black Widow (essentially cancelling it in the market with the Disney+ announcement, since theaters will likely boycott it like they did Raya) which was scheduled to open on April 29th, which would have given it a full first week over 7 consecutive holidays (basically) this year in a pretty open market. It was the most ideal release date imaginable. Japan is one of the least pirated markets in the world, so they wouldn't have needed to worry much about it ending up online ahead of the U.S. release either.
