Since Mon was discount day, shouldn't Tuesday be less pre-sale loaded than Mon? I will say Tuesday grow for everything.

I only count TOHO cinema, Monday is AEON cinema discount but yeah Tue could be higher than Mon in usual locations

Is there really room for just a 15% drop in order to take the 12th weekend record from Frozen?
I was expecting something like -30/35%, around ¥600/650 million.

I guess we'll have to wait and see how it performs, but the more the better!

@Corpse and others, do you now think that ¥35Bn-¥36Bn (26M-27M admissions) is locked or we still have to wait to find out ? And what is locked for you today ? PS : How is Monday going now ?

That total is pretty much locked up. It'll probably be there by Jan. 10th/11th.

I'm not doing predictions or projections for any further days for the next couple weeks (besides the Weekend Forecasts) since we're in a holiday period now. Instead, I post the daily estimates for the Top 10 films each day during the holiday periods.

Generally speaking, whatever the films come in at at the start of holiday periods is roughly what they'll earn over each of the weekdays. Not exactly the same, but in the same ballpark. If a film earned ¥100 million today, it'll likely land between ¥80-120 million for the following days. Again, this is just generally speaking. Numbers during holiday periods can vary a lot since the increases are so large, and there's not much of a means to accurately predict them.

For this week in particular, given how the dates landed, Thursday will be the lowest day (New Year's Eve slows business) while Friday will be the highest day (New Year's Day and discount day).

@Corpse: what do you think about the marketing/PR for a movie nowadays comparing to it 10 or 20 years ago in a developed market like Japan?

If Tues/Wed/Thur/Fri is between ¥250mn and ¥300mn, then by Friday Demon Slayer will be around ¥33.8Bn, then Demon Slayer will need a weekend around ¥700mn to reach ¥34.5Bn. It's not sure that he gets there, but it's not impossible.

Can we still expect a Tuesday around 100k admissions at the usual locations ?

I think by Sunday Demon Slayer will be around 25.3M-25.4M admissions but I'm not sure because the holiday periods are really uncertain.

I don't know what the giveaway is for the 4DX screenings or how many of that item was available. Since it wasn't really marketing well, I'm guessing this wasn't something too interesting.

The final giveaway for the normal screenings are almost certainly gone after Monday.

In Japan (and other developed markets), it is really hard to have a new no.1 all time movie like this, right? Different from other developing markets where new no1 can occur in every one or two years).

Is the gap between marketing/PR/internet now and then not big enough? Or there are some other factors more significantly contributing in preventing it?

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train achieved an eleventh-consecutive weekend atop the box-office, experiencing an unprecedented 133% increase thanks to the final giveaway event and its 4DX expansion, shattering the eleventh weekend record in the process. Also over the weekend, on Saturday, the film surpassed Spirited Away to become the new highest grossing film in the market, breaking the long-standing 19-year-old record. And it still has a lot left in the tank, clearly, as it enters the New Year holiday period, so look for an eventual finish that will almost certainly never be beaten in our lifetimes.

>Pokemon: Coco debuted in second place, selling 234,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 375 screens, and sold 320,000 admissions over its first three-days in release. The 22nd Pokemon film was originally scheduled back in July, like every other Pokemon film of the past 22-years, but it was delayed due to COVID. As has been the case with all the younger-skewing films this year, its opening was subdued, although it was able to do just enough to avoid having the worst opening weekend in the series. But I wouldn't read too much into this slow start because, again, this has happened with all younger-skewing films this year, and they've mostly been able to recover by achieving great legs. Also, a change in an annual release date from July over the past 22-years is a major change and must be considered (just like Doraemon being delayed from March to August this year).

>New Interpretation Records of the Three Kingdoms continues to hold well, selling a further 185,000 admissions over its third weekend of release, and has now sold 1.65 million admissions. I will not be surprised if it doubles it three week total, so look for a total above ¥4 billion (~$40 million) without much trouble, but it has potential to go a bit higher, too.

>Poupelle of Chimney Town settled for a fourth place debut, selling 144,000 admissions over the weekend on 306 screens. Its three-day admissions haven't been released yet. This is more of a unique release, so it's hard to gauge its opening performance, but I'd say it's fair, maybe even good. And with the boosts it'll receive from the New Year holiday period, it can really run the numbers up and finish strong. For now, I'd say it's aiming for ¥2 billion (~$20 million), but it's one to keep a watch on.

>The Promised Neverland enjoyed a reasonable hold in its sophomore frame, so it's unlikely to drop-off quickly like many live-action Shonen films have a tendency of doing. It's also performed decently over the weekdays, suggesting that while it's still likely mostly appealing to the fanbase, said fanbase seems to be pretty diverse which will help it enjoy a solid run. ¥2 billion (~$20 million) remains the goal, but I believe it'll comfortably get above that mark and approach ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million).

>Stand By Me, Doraemon 2 managed to hold well-enough in its sixth-weekend so it can finally reach the New Year holiday period while posting respectable numbers still. Its total has been lacking due to little/no support on the weekdays (always the risk of opening in November for family films), but its total is going to grow quite a bit after this week (Monday alone was at least half of its weekend take), and I'm still expecting it to clear the ¥3 billion (~$30 million) milestone.

>Takizawa Kabuki Zero 2020: The Movie remains in the Top 10, even retaining its position from last weekend, so apologies for not estimating it in the Top 10 yesterday. It didn't have the admissions to make the Top 10, so there was something going on to boost its average ticket price to allow this to happen.

The final weekend of 2020 ended on a high note, beating the last weekend of 2019 by 8%.

Top 10 Totals in billions of Yen.

Great way to end 2020. Also, since theaters reopened nationwide back in mid-June, 2020 was only down 22% versus 2019. And 2019 was the biggest year ever for the Japan Box Office (and the most attended in over 40-years), so it's even more impressive considering that.

Thank you for your hardwork, I always find all your chart helpful.

Talking about yearly number of admits, do you have a chart for 2000 to now?
