And last Monday was Toho Cinemas Day as well. Remember it increased over 20%. The drop will be pretty big today, and probably for the rest of the weekdays this week, too, since it's the week before the holiday period begins and before the final giveaway this weekend. It'll be mostly casual moviegoers for the next several days; not too many fans are going to come out until the weekend.

Good point. The coming weekdays are going to be weaker in comparison specially because last week the weekdays were unusually stronger and there is a giveaway/4DX release right around the corner.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (12/19-20)
Does anyone have the numbers for three kingdoms ? Because maybe with the current numbers we will have a new number 1 this weekend.

Monday's drop has already fallen below 50%, but as you said this week we can expect big drops which is quite normal. The holidays, the giveaway weekend and the 4DX expansion are coming.

@Corpse I just wanted to come back to a point, when I said that I found this weekend to be a little disappointing, I spoke from my point of view, because in my lowest expectations I still saw it above ¥ 400mn, and it's true that in a way it was a little disappointing but this weekend is between a weekend boosted by gifts and a holiday weekend (+4DX expansion /+gifts), so obviously I can understand the bigger fall and a weekend below my expectations.

That being said, this 10th weekend is still the 4th best 10th weekend ever (ahead of Your Name after all), and next weekend may even have the potential to become the best 11th weekend ever.

@Corpse, do you have the list of the best 11th weekend of all time ? So we could know how much Demon Slayer needs to increase to have the best 11th weekend ever.

And I have a little question about Friday, the holidays start on Friday, but will this Friday act normally with a 20% or 30% drop I don't know, or will this Friday be stronger than usual ?

Frozen holds the 11th weekend record with ¥700.3 million.

Thank you for the information ! Demon Slayer would therefore need an increase of around 80% this coming weekend compared to last weekend to have the 11th best weekend ever. It sounds difficult but not impossible, I hope Charlie Jat was right when he said "Will be surprised if its under 75% increase." We'll see that in a few days.

Thinking of 33-34k today (-38% usual locations) and -30% overall while gross down just 25% Approx from last week.

Charlie, do you think Demon Slayer can see an 80% or more increase next weekend and have the 11th best weekend ever ?

The past several Christmas Days have been "mostly" normal, but the youngest-skewing films usually begin to see increases since pre-schools/day cares and elementary schools let out before other schools. 2015 was the most recent year where Christmas Day landed on a Friday, and it behaved mostly as a normal weekday with the exception of, again, the youngest-skewing films having started their increases before everything else. Remember that it's not a holiday in the market.

Once Stand By Me, Doraemon 2 begins to increase, pretty much the only young-skewing film in the top 15 or so films right now, we'll know schools have begun to let out for the Winter and the holiday period is starting.

As for Demon Slayer taking the Biggest 11th Weekend Record... it's going to be tough. I'm expecting a bigger increase this upcoming weekend versus even the 43% increase it had two weekends ago, but even then it has to almost double that already very high increase. I think we just need to wait and see because there's not really any precedent to look back to.

Also, Demon Slayer did achieve its 10th consecutive weekend at #1. Someone asked earlier. Three Kingdoms grossed ¥378 million in its second weekend.

Demon Slayer will likely get an 11th weekend at #1 this upcoming weekend (doubtful that Pokemon can dethrone it), and also a 12th weekend at #1 over the New Year. But that should be it since Gintama is likely to dethrone it in its 13th weekend.

However, if Gintama proves to be frontloaded from its own giveaway first week, it could return to #1 the following weekend. I wouldn't exactly anticipate this to happen, but a film can return to #1 after being knocked off, sometimes even months later.

It's very rare, but Your Name. did just that back in 2016/2017...twice. It achieved 9 consecutive weeks at #1 but was knocked off in its tenth weekend at the end of October. But it returned to #1 the following weekend and stayed at #1 for two more weeks to get up to 12 weekends at #1 before being dethrone again in mid-November. THEN, in its 22nd weekend of release, 2 months after being dethroned a second time, it managed to rise back to #1 once again in late-January to earn its 13th week at #1. Again, Your Name. is pretty much the only example of such craziness occurring, but since it has happened before, can't rule it out again, especially with minimal Hollywood competition.

Oh, thank you! I mentioned that when it occurred, but forgot. So yes, it has 18 weeks at #1, breaking the tie with Frozen.

I do think Gintama will be frontloaded as we have seen that DS giveaways have a huge impact on the BO.

I'm working on the Weekend Actuals now, and... Wonder Woman 1984 ended up missing the Top 5 this weekend after all. Good call, WandaLegion.

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train achieved a 10th-consecutive weekend atop the box-office, and even though the drop is easily its biggest to date, it followed its first ever increase last weekend, an increase of a whopping 43%. Therefore, this drop isn't particularly concerning heading into the holiday period very soon. Its 11th weekend will be the final giveaway weekend, as well as the start of its 4DX expansion, so look for a significant jump next weekend. And as of Sunday, it's only just over ¥500 million away (¥444 million as of Monday) from overtaking Spirited Away to become the new #1 film of all-time. Look for what was long thought a near impossible record to ever be challenged to finally be broken this upcoming Saturday (Dec. 26th).

>New Interpretations Record of the Three Kingdoms couldn't quite make a name for itself as the Demon Slayer-slayer, but it held fairly well, and thanks to its solid weekdays, has reached a pretty impressive two-week total. This is the go-to film for adults this upcoming holiday period who are either not interested in Demon Slayer, or have already seen it and want to watch something else. So I'd expect an impressive run during the holidays, especially during New Year, so look for a total above ¥4 billion (~$40 million).

>The Promised Neverland enjoyed a good debut in third place. The live-action adaptation of the first arc of the popular manga (concluded this year) and anime sold 219,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 341 screens, and 284,146 admissions over its first three days in release. This is notably better, even roughly double in many cases, than a lot of other live-action adaptations of a Shonen series such as Tokyo Ghoul or Bleach. Expect a finish between ¥2-2.5 billion (~$20-25 million). The audience reception appears fair right now, and if it would finish above ¥2 billion, Toho and Shueisha are likely to consider sequel adaptations.

>Kamen Rider Zero-One: REAL x TIME came in fourth place, coming in shy of 100,000 admissions by selling an estimated 97,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 335 screens, and 126,242 admissions over its first three days in release. Unfortunately, this is down nearly 50% versus last December's film. And regardless of holidays, this series is one of the most frontloaded in the market, so it'll miss the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone. There are enough films doing strong enough business to suggest it's not the state of the box office, but rather that this is a younger skewing series, and younger skewing films have been almost exclusively the only films still seeing a negative impact due to COVID. The film marks the 63rd theatrical release in the long-running Kamen Rider series.

>Wonder Woman 1984 also disappointed, selling just 75,677 admissions over the weekend frame across 340 screens, and 113,095 admissions over its first three days in release. Expectations were low given that DC films are unpopular in the market, and this is a sequel, but this is a 57% drop versus the original film, which is worse than the 46% drop-off that Justice League saw from Batman vs. Superman. Unfortunately, it'll miss the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone, too, making it the first DC film to miss that mark since 2012's Man of Steel. I also want to mention that it probably didn't really receive any marketing, or at least very little, especially given the lower screen count suggesting it didn't receive a dubbed release either.

That is really bad for Wonder Woman, I know superhero movies in general and DC movies in particular aren't big in Japan but still they make a decent run. This will further support Hollywood studios in making decisions to not release movies in theaters and go directly to streaming.

One weekend left in the year, and I'm expecting it'll be up this year versus the last weekend of 2019 (thanks to Demon Slayer's expected large increase and Pokemon's debut). So the Top 10 Films will likely end up being down 43% year-on-year.
