While I agree the total would not have been impacted it might not have gotten some of those weekend records specially the 9th weekend if not for the boost though I'm sure it would have been a close #2.

I guess they could've tried for the eighth weekend record if they switched the giveaways, but I doubt many more people than us actually care

If it would have been at a steady decline then at the high level is operating there might be a scenario that people would have lost interest sooner thus I believe giveaways have kept the interest in the series higher which inherently keeps attracting more new audience. Of course all of this is a speculation so we will never know.

And Corpse said that he thinks the giveaways, etc., probably led to more repeat viewing/people just buying the ticket to pick up the giveaway. You're probably both right.

But together that's probably not so many people, at least in a country like Japan that just doesn't have a very large amount of "casual" audience to pull from in the first place. Who knows how much that actually is.

No, but it's 100% appealing to all age-groups, including elementary-aged children and senior citizens. There isn't a particular day-part where the film either excels nor slows down, rather it's always steady business in terms of percentage share throughout the whole day, a clear indication it's bringing in all demographics.

And that's not surprising. A recent Oricon poll (3,848 responders ranging in their teens to their sixties) found that a whopping 97.8% of Japanese are aware of the series. And 76% said they either "liked" or "really liked" the series.

For their reasons for liking the series, the survey found:

76.4% for the story.
49.3% for the setting.
45.3% for the relatability of the characters.

Furthermore, 31% of those that liked/really liked it said they own the manga, with 66.1% of them saying they own all the volumes.

Multiple respondents commented on how the series helped them treasure and connect with their family. A woman in her thirties said, "I would never have thought that at my age I would have a conversation about anime with my mother, who is in her sixties." A woman in her forties said that Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba was the first time she, her spouse, and their child watched a film together in the cinemas. A man in his sixties that said he was enjoying the series while letting his son explain it to him.

Other respondents remarked on how the growth of their children has become tied with Demon Slayer. Another woman in her thirties commented on how her child, who never liked kanji, was really happy to learn the kanji for "pillar" at school. A man in his thirties remarked that his two-year-old daughter learned to say "Kimetsu no Yaiba," and a man in his forties said that his daughter was starting to show an interest in history because of the series.

The mainstream appeal of the series has also allowed people of different generations to connect even in the workplace and beyond. A woman in her thirties remarked that when going to karaoke with people of different age groups, everyone is able to bond over the theme songs "Gurenge" and "Homura." A woman in her fifties said that she was having more conversations with people in her family and at work, and a man in his sixties says that he loves talking to Demon Slayer fans.

Another recent, but separate survey found that among elementary-aged children, the series' main character, Tanjiro, ranked as their most admired person, ahead of their moms. In addition to Tanjiro ranking 1st, six other characters from the series made their top 10.

He is so kind, sweet, precious. His attitude makes him kind of unique among other main characters. His main goal is only about tranforming his sister to human again, rather than becoming a strongest one.... like other typical shonen.

Tuesday is also up from last week (not to the same degree, but i assume yesterday was helped by discounts and possibly giveaway leftovers), so there does seem to be something this week. And if the other weekdays follow this trend the movie will break the record on friday instead.

I mean obviously. Though it won't matter now, but say it was close race, ths record would have only gone if it grossed ¥31.7Bn, not ¥30.8Bn.

Usually this happens elsewhere too. Sometime a film's final numbers aren't reported publicly. But when some film overtake it, the record is claimed after taking everything in consideration.

Last week Monday and Tuesday dropped big from their previous week, so I guess its expected. Also someone said school holidays in Japan started.

Well, then it'll be around Christmas then after all, or maybe a little before if these holds/increases keep up. But I'm glad they officially updated the record, that way we can avoid the "it hasn't really beaten Spirited Away if you count its re-release!" talk. So when it does surpass it next week, it'll have also beaten the original record plus its re-release earnings.

And speaking of the two increases the past two days for Demon Slayer, it's definitely not because of schools being on holiday, since they're not. Rather, exams should be beginning this week and the next instead. All the searches I've done still suggests the winter break begins on December 26th as normal this year, though some locations (in the cities) may let out a few days early to avoid travel congestion over the weekend given how the dates are on the calendar.

You'll know when schools begin holiday because the younger-skewing films, like Stand By Me, Doraemon 2, will see huge increases (up several hundred percent) over last week, and so far it and nothing else has begun to increase and are behaving normally.

There have been three weekends since theaters reopened nationwide back in June that the Top 10 has consisted of only Japanese films. And the vast majority have consisted of either 8 or 9 Japanese films.

If it weren't for Warner Bros., especially their re-releases (various Nolan films leading up to Tenet, and some re-releases like Harry Potter 1), a lot of the 9/10s would have been 10/10.

I'm still a little surprised Disney isn't releasing anything (besides Onward). I get it, they have Disney+ and everything, they're totally fine, but they could be releasing their films here. The domestic film industry releases enough films and is strong enough to support theaters and the box office, but some Hollywood support outside of an occasional Warner Bros. release would be nice.

Yeah I guess that the Hollywood studios release schedule will be back to normal 4-6 months from now - that's why I wanted to ask you to keep the 1/2 billion mark for your yearly charts in 2021...

So this weekend should be able to past 30.8 billion (as a lot of y'all said that this week is supposed to be the week that KnY will dethrone SA)

So... my question is, will KnY take up to 24-25 (Thursday to Friday) just to break the current record of SA? Or will it only need the 24th? or worst case, will it need Saturday and Sunday (26-27) to beat SA?

Because idk how much this week will pump out. Will it get to 31 billion at least?
