I haven't been following COVID case news anymore as its too depressing. Have there been a spike in the number of cases in US recently?

More of an explosion, really. 221,000+ cases and 3,100 deaths for the day last I saw earlier. About 2 million more cases and 23,000 deaths since December 1st.

Re: Predict WW1984's domestic opening weekend
In a sane world the thing that would matter is mortality rate not number of deaths. There is WAY more cases than April but not that many more deaths. On Dec 10th there was 2,974 deaths and 217,779 new cases. On April 10th there was 34,361 cases and 2,283 deaths.
Using the Dec. 10th numbers of 0.1% as many deaths compared to new cases, the covid hysteria and lockdowns should be over, it makes perfect sense that eventually the end result of covid is not it being eradicated but becoming like the flu as weaker versions of the strain are the ones that spread easier. The death rate of the flu is about 0.1%.

Are there issued lockdowns? I thought only theaters and some non-essential shops are closing but are people not allowed to go out of their houses?

No, they’re ramping it up including some ridiculousness like walking is now banned in LA except for essential activities I know for me mandatory masks in public places started about a month ago, although more places are open than in the spring.

The death pace still has a long way to climb in the next 14 days.

For example on Nov. 13th they were at 188 thousand cases and 1,417 deaths, whereas the highest day for cases in April was 36 thousand and highest day for deaths was 2,744.

You seem really misguided on the covid science. Reported cases in April are incomparable with those in June onward or so because there was so much less testing, so a much smaller fractions of each day’s actual infections were making it into the reported cases. The IFR has probably been ~stable at .4-.6%-ish since June. And the CRR at reasonable time lags has also been pretty stable since then, though thanksgiving reporting irregularities have been tough recently.

If they're testing that many people it's going to end up increasing the death numbers as well. I have 0 confidence that there has been proper separation between "dying with COVID" and "dying because of COVID". If someone dies from cancer but has asymptomatic COVID or minor symptoms while doing it, it's marked as a COVID death. Someone dies of old age but has minor COVID, it's marked as a COVID death. We all know it. Therefore mass testing leads to a lot of "COVID deaths". The reason COVID targets old people more isn't because it has magic old people killing powers, it's because old people die more for other reasons. If they counted everyone who dies while having influenza as an influenza death, the number would be massive. COVID is such a deadly pandemic that the US is on track to have less deaths in 2020 than 2019 and 2018.

I try to stay as neutral in these conversations because I haven't been following COVID since November as its too depressing. Having said that, it should be clear from the above statement that I just want it to end. In Singapore its effectively working because wearing masks is at full 100% and that there were lockdowns when it was really needed. It's also clear to me that there are individuals at both end of the spectrum, one side believes that these restrictions do not bring any good, the other side believes that restrictions and precautions and necessary and effective. I'm on the second side of the argument but don't digress the other point of view because I believe that without other point of view we will never end these restrictions.

That said, the media has blown it way out of proportion. 'Dying with COVID' has been discussed by many doctors and medical professionals.

I have looked at reports of deaths in my state and there have been like next to no deaths under 65. Figures all these 70+ year olds would be smart enough to take precautions.

Re: COVID-19 and box office
Using that same logic, cancer and plane crashes are not causes of death either. Because we’re all gonna die anyways. The coroner should just put the cause of death as “Birth” on every certificate, right?
If covid takes you even one minuter sooner than you would have gone otherwise then you died from covid.
