That... would be sick lol

Not without a release in China. Some members here have said it's too violent/bloody, and their officials have denied it a release. I don't think it can be censored (not really sure how they'd even do this, honestly), so I wouldn't expect a release there for time being. Not saying it's impossible, I don't know the Chinese market very well, but the amount of censoring would just be too much, and effectively eliminate the most important moments in the film.

Here is the International thread, by the way:

Without China is possible if Korea go massive but its really tough as long as China don't give it release.

So the requirement for 30B yen milestone is all things mentioned for above milestones + an unforeseen event.

"COVID has absolutely helped it by providing an escape for a lot of people, and with messaging that really resonates with the Japanese people in these times: A time period many older audiences are nostalgic for again, a story to help those who have, or currently are, contemplating suicide (major issue, especially now), and that general "never give up" attitude (this isn't original by any means, but it's highly important right now)."

This is interesting, can you explain this more. Thank you.

And beside many the external factors required for each big milestone you mentioned above , what are the requirements for internal factor of the movie such as plot, chatacters, movie message,...

Point one: I'd say yes now that we'll soon have two films, not just one, above ¥30 billion.

For your last part of your post: Well, a generally strong reception by audiences and critics always helps, more so from a strong audience reception. There are many examples of critic favorites not doing well, or being frontloaded, so the audience scores are a lot more important. Films with emotional plots usually do well (a lot of bigger films have emotional, bittersweet type stories and characters). Films with strong family/sibling relationships typically perform well. And films with positive, do your best type of messaging do well. This doesn't mean the film itself needs to be purely positive, but if the characters or story centers around this message it can still be surrounding by more negative or sad elements.

____________________________________

As for the bolded part: Suicide has been a big issue in Japan for many, many years, and with COVID now, it's becoming even more of a concern. Suicide deaths are higher than COVID deaths recently. One of the biggest contributors to the high suicide rate is high expectations. From very early ages, pressure is placed upon the Japanese to meet the expectations of their parents, their teachers, and their future bosses or executives. This isn't exclusive to Japan or anything, it's just that Japan is a society where this plays a much bigger role in people's lives.

Demon Slayer does a very good job at encouraging people of all generations to not give up, and throughout its story (that I've read so far), and especially in this arc that the film adapted, it takes a more central part of the story. Without spoiling anything, the main character questions whether his actions have been good enough to continue living (which many Japanese do), and suicide is referenced. And again, not posting spoilers, there's another part where the character recognizes that he's not good enough, but that doesn't mean you have to stop living and trying your best (again, this really resonates with the Japanese). Demon Slayer excels very well at delivering this life and death messaging, and with the added stress that COVID has put on people on top of their already stressful lifestyle, the manga and now movie is really helping a lot of people.

And finally, on a bit of a lighter note, this series takes place in the Taisho Period in Japan, which a lot of the older generation is nostalgic for as it was a more peaceful, simpler period that occurred between two difficult periods.

Thank you very much for your reply.
So, in other words, if there are some strong connections between the characters in the movie and people in real life in some certain situations, there will be high chance it can become a hit.

Your predictions are on par with mine, I was thinking exactly the same numbers, @Corpse do you think that the first week of December will decline less thanks to the release of the last volume of the manga ? The next week I expect a drop of around 25%-30% but maybe the drop will be a little less high thanks to this

*Estimated current population.

It'll likely add a full 1% between now and Sunday to jump above Titanic.

It would need to reach 24.924 million admissions (maybe a tad less as the population may drop a tad more) to beat Tokyo Olympiad on this list. I'm not predicting it will right now, but it seems doable. A challenge, definitely; it would need to gross ~¥33.15 billion with its current average ticket price, which is possible right now.

Alo12345: You can say that, yes.

LPLC: I'm not expecting anything particularly impressive in the way of holds during the first week of December. The final volume release will certainly help, but I imagine it'll be a pretty small effect that occurs over the course of its run, not on a specific day or week/weekend. December 5th, the first day after the volumes' release, will still likely see a decent sized drop since it'll be coming off the first day of the second round of the giveaway events.

Remember the see-saw I've said the film is on? It still likely applies. I don't expect any actual consistency because of how the giveaways being every other weekend. It dropped just 14% over the first giveaway weekend. Then it dropped 32% this past weekend. And this upcoming weekend will either hold very well, too, like the first giveaway weekend, or now that the numbers have dropped a bit out of the stratosphere (even though they're still record-setting), and that there are fewer printed this time around (1 million versus 1.5 million), I think the rush factor will be greater to possibly make the weekend flat/see a slight increase. That means the Dec. 05-06 weekend will likely be around 30% again.

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train repeats atop the box-office for a sixth consecutive weekend, and claimed the Biggest Sixth-Weekend Record. As with each week, check the past several pages for further analysis and discussion regarding the film.

>Stand By Me, Doraemon 2... disappointed. It beat this past August's release at the usual locations, but ultimately failed to match its opening weekend from poor rural business, and low IMAX attendance that kept its average ticket price lower than expected. It sold 305,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 416 screens, and 542,037 admissions over its first four-days in release. Its four day total ultimately fell below the original film's 2-day opening weekend.

There's a lot that went wrong here, so I'll keep it short and just list the reasons: 1. Takashi Yamazki's bad reputation in recent years; 2. COVID has mostly only negatively impacted family films, and this is a family film, so...; 3. Wedding Plot was unappealing for children, its primary audience; 4. Demon Slayer's monopoly on the box office was too large to attract any casual moviegoers.

A total projection is tricky to figure out, but for the time being, it'll be hoping to reach the ¥3 billion (~$30 million) milestone.

>The Legend of Hei is doing amazing. I don't know what the highest grossing Chinese animated film is in the market, but I would bet this one is on track to taking that title since I can't even think of any others.

>Violet Evergarden: The Movie continues to hang in there, and Shochiku will keep it playing long enough now to reach the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone. Very impressive result.

And unfortunately, with Doraemon's under-performance and the lack of any Hollywood films (they should be releasing in the market), this weekend is the first in six weeks to be down versus last year by 32%. Still good, but Doraemon should have provided bigger support to Demon Slayer.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
@Corpse I know Demon Slayer will outperform Spirited Away 100% but I wanted to know how many dollars it takes to get past ¥31.66Bn ? $300M-$305M?

And I also wanted to know how the holidays are going to be for Demon Slayer because I am not sure how movies generally work during the Christmas holidays, but I guess it could look like this :

- 1st week of vacation a 15% / 20% increase over the week before
- and in the 2nd week an increase of 10% compared to the first week of vacation ?
- And finally 3rd week, a small decrease of 15% ?

You can't accurately convert from USD back to JPY. The exchange rate is always changing, and while it's been pretty consistent for quite a while, just slight fluctuations go a long way in altering the numbers. However, using today's exchange rate with how much more in JPY it needs, then you get $302 million.

Different films perform differently during holiday periods. It's all about the demographics.

Christmas Week pretty much only boosts family films or those appealing towards teens as schools begin to let out a week ahead of New Year to help with travel. Christmas isn't a holiday in Japan, so films targeting any other demographics still behave mostly normal up until New Year.

Here is Christmas Week 2019 to give you an idea of how it acts and how different films perform (you can see how differently it effects a film depending on its audience):

New Year Week is bigger, and greatly benefits films targeting the more non-family skewing films, as it's one of the few times during the year where working adults have multiple days off outside of weekends. Family skewing films begin to behave normally again a few days after January 3rd (last bank holiday), but that'll be Jan. 4th this year due to the calendar.

And here is New Year Week 2020 to give you an idea of how it acts and how different types of films perform depending on their audience:

% changes versus same day last week.
Note: New Year Week is one of the 3 biggest weeks at the Japan Box-Office, alongside Golden Week in late-April and Obon Festival in mid-August, respectively.

And since there'll likely be an extra week of holiday/time-off this year due to COVID (to help avoid travel congestion), I expect this special third week to be the weakest, and to sort of act like how summer weekdays may act. A boost, but not near holiday level or anything as people gradually prepare for work/school again the next week.

Seems like a big drop. 35-40% drop. Expected. Tuesday was stronger than I expected.

Ok nice thank you @Corpse, and this year the holidays don't start on Monday, December 21, but on Friday, December 25, right ?

PS : At 11 a.m, DS is down 40% from last week and it's even down from yesterday, on a Tuesday. It will surely continue to decline beyond 50%. I understand that there will be a sharp drop but not a drop at this point, I did not expect that.

Tuesday was surprisingly stronger so I think it will drop off today, Thursday and Friday before the business explodes over weekend. I believe the announcement of the giveaway yesterday is the reason for big drop-off now. About 50% of the audience would be repeat viewers and they would rather have a chance to get that free giveaway than see it over a weekday.

I am not really sure about 1Bn weekend next week. Saturday will be boosted sure, but Sunday will have normal drop. Gone by Sunday can be put a real value of 475mn, Next should be perhaps 350-375mn. That will mean Saturday pull atleast 625mn.

Giveaway 2 weeks ago was 795mn, coinciding with Toho day which would have boosted admits a bit too, but mostly cancelled due to discount. A normal 20% weekly drop will mean around 500mn. Let's say it overperform, 550mn.

I think around 900-950mn next weekend and overall week around 1450-1500mn. These drops have meant that Spirited Away will perhaps take another Week. I was expecting 26th December to be the day but now perhaps 31st Dec or 1st Jan.

Without Xmas & New Year boost, Spirited Away would have been really really close. Just show how big was Spirited Away.

Yesterday performed as a Monday with very strong morning showing and relatively weak afternoon/night pace.
Today will increase about 20% in the end anyway

You mean afternoon/ evening show the drop will better and finish the day with sub 30% drop?

Absolutely, I think without Christmas, New Years and gifts, Demon Slayer would not have overtaken Spirited Away. And the same with all this he will surpass it (never speak too fast) but they will be really very close. And I'm also agree with your weekend and week predictions

EDIT : The covid also helped a lot to achieve big figures since DS did not have to deal with the Hollywood competition, in fact I just realized that this film will overtake Spirited Away which is obviously extremely difficult thanks to a set of factors which have been beneficial to him

This weekend will have 1m giveaway, does the less giveaway make more people wait for the weekend to get it?
