Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
I'm going to open a Demon Slayer INTL thread. It's clearly deserving of one considering the amount of discussion and because it seems likely to become the top grossing film of 2020.

I certainly don't mind all the discussion going on in here, but some of it's getting cluttered and questions/responses are being overlooked unless someone goes back several pages. We did 6/7 pages just over this weekend alone! So going to try to get it a little more Japan-focused again, but don't think that means you CAN'T post other stuff, too. Maybe just share specific international numbers and news in the INTL thread.

I'm mostly going to leave the INTL thread to you guys to post numbers in and to update (I'll obviously still contribute by posting), as I'm pretty tied up with just Japan and don't really know too much about other markets.

I think it's a good idea, before Demon Slayer this forum had 550 pages and now in a month we go to 600 pages but after that also shows all the interest for this film which will be remembered.

@Corpse do you have any news on how Tuesday is going?

Tuesday is down about 20% versus last week. Another very good result.

I'll have the Weekend Actuaks (Top 10) posted here shortly.

It's a little late now, but expect it to be around 19 million after Sunday and 19.5 million after next Monday. Basically, just divide what I have as its projected gross by 1,330 to get a rough admission figure.

05 (11) ¥x46,730,900 ($446,000), +86%, ¥1,844,810,900 ($17.7 million), Violet Evergarden: The Movie (Shochiku) WK9

07 (08) ¥x39,574,400 ($378,000), -04%, ¥117,231,128 ($1.1 million), The Legend of Hei (Aniplex/Team Joy) WK2
08 (05) ¥x38,830,790 ($371,000), -27%, ¥290,429,000 ($2.7 million), Pretty Cure Miracle Leap! A Mysterious Day With Everyone (Toei) WK3
09 (06) ¥x25,873,370 ($247,000), -51%, ¥120,408,060 ($1.2 million), Monster Strike: Lucifer - Dawn of Despair (Aeon Entertainment) WK2
10 (---) ¥x25,174,500 ($241,000), 0, ¥x38,460,100 ($0.4 million), Falner in the Azure: The Beyond Episodes 7, 8 & 9 (Movic) NEW

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train - See Last Many Pages. The film continues its overwhelming performance, earning the Biggest Fifth Weekend ever by a wide margin, has sold 17.505 million admissions as of Sunday, and is far, far from being finished.

>The Legacy of Dr. Death: The Black File opened fairly well in second place, selling 102,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 347 screens, and 143,901 admissions over its first three-days in release. Its on that cusp of an opening being high enough to reach the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone, so it's a bit 50/50, but I think it'll managed to get there.

>The Voice of Sin, similar to The Legacy of Dr. Death, also had a debut right around that mark that makes reaching ¥1 billion (~$10 million) 50/50, but it's been holding well enough to get there as well.

>Violet Evergarden: The Movie received a Dolby expansion this weekend, and it proved very successful from its large weekend increase. It's within range of the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone now, and Shochiku is likely to keep it around long enough to reach the mark. So far, this film has earned 130% more than last year's Violet Evergarden release.

The Weekend Top 10 is up 98% versus the same weekend last year.

Based on the Top 10 earnings, 2020 has improved to be ~48% behind 2019 (biggest year ever). If all goes well these last six weeks, the year could be aiming for a 40% drop year-on-year.

Not bad at all considering everything that has happened this year to be honest.

I guess with that, it is quite possible the local releases are flat with Hollywood share dropping big.

Regarding Doraemon, since it's almost exclusively a family/children film, it probably shouldn't have particularly impressive pre-sales, especially on a Friday (work/school day). The first Stand By Me Doraemon, as well as this year's annual release that was moved from March to August, both opened during summer vacation where Friday is much stronger than it is in November.

If Stand By Me, Doraemon 2 has a slow Firday, it should be expected, but look for it excel over the weekend frame itself, and on Monday (holiday), too. But its weekdays until late-December are going to be quite poor. It's considered the off-season in the market.

It's pretty rare, or at least uncommon, for heavily family/children-skewing films to open in November since the weekdays are very poor and they have to survive 5-6 weeks before any holiday boost (minus a single day on 11/23). The vast majority of family/children-skewing films open in December (New Year), March (Spring Break), April (Golden Week), July (Summer Vacation), or August (Obon Festival), since they're pretty dependent on weekday support to post big numbers.

Yep, that's because school and work are out after 5pm, so the evening shows will be stronger on Friday. Friday mornings/afternoons are actually the WEAKEST of any day of the week, including Tuesday and Thursday. But the opposite will be true over the weekend where the morning/afternoon sales will be stronger than the evening/night sales.

The 8pm showings are also generally some of the busiest, especially on Fridays and Saturdays, since they're "late-shows" (discounted).

Remember that Friday does not act like a weekend in the market; it's very much a weekday, even if a film is opening on it.

I feel like I have made this list in the past (or at least posted some top films), so I'll go back and check and see.

Some off the top of my head would be the Red Cliff films (China), Parasite (Korea), A Moment to Remember (Korea). I'm pretty sure France has at least one or two films also above ¥3 billion, but I'll have to check.

I think the Red Cliff films might be the only ones to achieve blockbuster status (¥5 billion+).

Doraemon thinking Sat = 3×Fri like Frozen 2, DS thinking 2.6×Fri, weekend bump should be quite close

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
I just realized that since last week's numbers weren't completely right, last Thursday which was supposed to be the first day for Demon Slayer to have less than 100k admissions at usual locations was in fact probably over 100k , so it may only be today, 33 days after its release, that Demon Slayer will have had less than 100k admissions at the usual locations (unless by the end of the week once the official figures arrive we realize that not), or am I wrong ?
