NOTE: Cumulative Totals are as of Tuesday, Sept. 22nd, due to the back-to-back national holidays on Monday and Tuesday.

>Tenet debuted atop the long Silver Week holiday period, selling 199,559 admissions over the weekend frame itself across 488 screens. And over the long 5-day holiday period, Nolan's latest sold 468,229 admissions. For just the weekend frame itself, Tenet debuts higher than both Dunkirk (though a little lower in admissions) and Interstellar, and only trailed The Dark Knight Rises by 13%.

This is also the biggest opening weekend for a Hollywood film of 2020, granted, Hollywood keeps delaying their films, so not much competition on that front. But more important than the good weekend numbers is the impressive five-day total. Nolan's films are fairly frontloaded from appealing heavily toward his dedicated fanbase in the market, but even with mediocre legs, it's likely going to reach ¥2 billion (~$20 million) to become his second highest grossing film in the market, behind just Inception.

>Violet Evergarden: The Movie enjoyed a healthy second place debut, selling 174,636 admissions over the weekend frame itself on just 153 screens. And over the long 5-day holiday period, it sold 392,072 admissions. Very good opening and five-day total here, and we can expect a total between ¥1.5-2.0 billion ($15-20 million).

>Stigmatized Properties and Tapestry continue to have good performances, and thanks to the healthy holiday boost, both films are going to exceed the ¥2 billion ($20 million) milestone quite comfortably. The former in particular might be able to approach ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million).

>Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur exceeded the ¥3 billion milestone after its seventh week in release (plus the two holidays). This was the desired goal to reach, as it's the standard for the franchise until the series saw an uptick over the past few years. So while it's going to finish 30/35% below its most recent predecessors, it was still able to reach a satisfactory total despite capacity restrictions during the majority of its run and a big release date change from its tradtional March release.

>Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel III - Spring Song surpassed its predecessor after its fifth weekend in release, and became the highest grossing film in the Fate/stay night trilogy of films. Big success.

>From Today, It's My Turn! holds onto a spot in the Top 10, achieving its tenth-weekend there. The surprise blockbuster continues to hold quite well, too, against a lot more competition in its first few weeks in release, and will finish close to the ¥5.5 billion ($52/53 million) mark.

Forgot to also mention that the Top 10 this weekend was only down 8.2% versus the same weekend last year. And while most chains are back to 100% occupancy, the two largest chains, Toho Cinemas and Aeon Cinemas, are still at 50% capacity so it makes the state of the current box-office even more impressive.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (And More)
As a I said last month, now that the box-office is back on track, I'm no longer posting weekly video game and manga sales as I did from April-July, but will continue to update certain charts when a video game or manga sells a certain amount in its first week or reaches a certain amount in total.

>Tenet remains the #1 film at the box-office, and delivered a very good second weekend hold by selling 144,707 admissions in its sophomore frame, bringing its cumulative admissions up to 742,190 admissions. After two-weeks, Tenet has already nearly outgrossed Interstellar (will have as of Monday or Tuesday) and is running ahead of every other Nolan film aside from Inception. Look for Nolan's latest to become his second highest-grossing film in the market, again behind Inception, as it's targeting a total between ¥2-2.5 billion ($20-25 million).

>Crayon Shin-chan: Crash! Rakuga Kingdom and the Almost Four Heroes hasn't been able to adjust to its rescheduled release after being delayed from its traditional mid-April slot, and experiences a pretty poor hold in its third weekend. September is a very poor month to release a younger-skewing film. The 27th entry in the long-running film franchise will still earn a profitable gross, but it will finish noticeably below many of its predecessors. But Toho had little to lose here, unlike their other annual franchises, and didn't really have much choice but to release it here since they rescheduled the latest Pokemon film in December.

>Stigmatized Properties exceeded the ¥2 billion milestone after its fifth-week in release, exceeding expectations and giving Shochiku a welcomed success. It won't reach the ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) mark, but it will get fairly close to that mark as well.

>Tapestry is right on the cusp of exceeding the ¥2 billion milestone, and did so on Monday. Like Stigmatized Properties, this is another film that has exceeded expectations and while Toho has been doing very well during these times, it's still a nice success for them.

>Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel III - Spring Song became the highest-grossing film in the trilogy last week, but isn't slowing down quite yet, with a very good hold in its sixth-weekend of release. It's not exactly necessary for Aniplex to give it a push (or just let it play longer) to reach the ¥2 billion milestone, as it may fall just short, but they'll probably do so.

The Top 10 this weekend is only down 1.4% versus the same weekend last year.

¥500.0 million ($4.7 million) / 0.35 million [E] - Birds of Prey (Warner Bros.)
¥500 million ↑ (COVID-19 Expansion)

NOTE: Any figures for a film that earned below ¥1 billion that is no longer playing are rough estimates. It's rare for final figures for films earning below that mark to be reported, but I'm going to include them this year given the circumstances. Just remember: They're rough estimates.

Legend:

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (09/26-27); Charts Update
Next weekend won't happen since the first weekend of October 2019 was one of the best October weekends on record, largely due to Joker breaking out and delivering the biggest October Opening Weekend ever.

But it's very likely to happen the weekend after because the second weekend of October 2019 was heavily impacted by a major typhoon, which caused the top 10 to drop 50/60%. That's not exactly a fair comparison though, so while it'll be the first weekend to increase year-on-year since theaters reopened nationwide in June, I wouldn't consider it a win, exactly.

However, the third weekend of October will be way up versus last year. Not only will the holdovers be posting good, normal numbers (pretty much everything has met/exceeded expectations since June, younger-skewing films aside), but the first Demon Slayer move is opening and will almost certainly break the October Opening Weekend Record by a considerable margin. And if Toho and Aeon Cinemas are back to 100% occupancy by then, I expect it'll open above ¥1 billion (maybe significantly so).

Corpse, I just noticed that some theatres of toho cinemas in Tokyo prefecture are going to run on 100% capacity from 3rd October. I guess it's just for weekends.

Just saw this as well. While capacity restrictions have been fully lifted nationwide, there are some local laws in certain cities that make it a bit more complicated than simply allowing 100% occupancy for Toho Cinemas and Aeon Cinemas since they have the most theaters in the country. So it's complicated for them to suddenly go back to 100% capacity at all their locations like most smaller chains did within a week of the government fully lifting restrictions on them on September 19th.

Toho Cinemas is going to allow 100% capacity at 12 of their 70 or so locations on the weekends only for the time being, beginning on October 3rd. These 12 locations are all probably among the Top 25 busiest theaters in the whole country, including the single busiest theater in the country located in Shinjuku (that theater operates 20 hours a day and regularly sells-out almost everything all day/night).

All the same guidelines apply for the weekend 100% capacity versus the weekday 50% capacity, such as temperature checks before entering and mask-wearing always required, except for one extra measure: No food will be sold or allowed in the weekend showings. As you can imagine, sitting next to someone who's constantly lowering their mask to eat is an easy way for potential spreading. And you might say, well, don't sit next to anyone you don't know, but at these locations, a few in particular (such as Shinjuku), sell-outs are frequent at all hours of the day.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: October Release Schedule
October is typically the weakest month of the year for the box-office (not always, but in most years), but this year's release schedule looks very promising. Every week has at least one notable or big film opening.

>The Asadas! should do well this upcoming weekend, the latest from the acclaimed upcoming director, Ryota Nakano.

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is likely to uh...slay the October Opening Weekend Record, and could potentially open well above ¥1 billion. The manga series has become a true phenomenon in Japan and worldwide, shattering sales records, selling over 65 million copies in Japan in just the last 10-months (likely to be over 70 million when the film opens) and over 100 million copies worldwide in just four-years.

The film isn't an original story either, like nearly all anime films, and is instead adapting the next arc in the story that begins right where season one of the anime concluded last year. Aniplex had to collaborate with Toho in order to give the film the necessary theaters, and pre-sales are being limited to 6 per-person due to the demand.

>Your Eyes Tell, while I don't know much about it, has to be something special given just how wide it's opening is for being a Gaga (independent distributor) release.

>The Voice of Sin will do quite well, too, based on the award-winning novel, and adapted to the big screen by Nobuhiro Doi.

I'm looking forward to Demon Slayer, manga is really good.

Corpse, I saw on twitter that as Stigmatized Properties has crossed the 2 billion mark in box office, is now the No. 1 J-horror movie released in Japan in 2000s. It is true?

Btw, thank you for all the hard work here.

Sort of. If you exclude Lesson of the Evil, then that statement is true. But I wouldn't exclude it, so I personally wouldn't give the title to Stigmatized Properties. Not yet anyway, since there's a decent chance it'll eventually outgross Lesson of the Evil.

I'll actually update the All-Time Highest-Grossing Horror Films list shortly. I haven't updated it in a few years, and there are a couple films to add to it by now. The genre isn't very successful in the market (horror and comedies are the weakest genres, but comedies have more potential), so the list isn't very impressive.

Welcome to the forum :)

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Highest Grossing Horror Films
Highest-Grossing Horror Films of All-Time (1980-):

¥3.30 billion ($26.6 million) - Ringu 2 (1999)
¥2.50 billion ($22.9 million) - School Ghost Stories 2 (1996)
¥2.34 billion ($29.4 million) - Lesson of the Evil (2012)
¥2.32 billion ($14.5 million) - School Ghost Stories (1995)
¥2.20 billion ($19.6 million) - It (2017)
¥2.04 billion ($19.3 million) - Stigmatized Properties (2020) [5 Weeks In Release]
¥1.90 billion ($17.9 million) - Sleepy Hollow (2000)
¥1.84 billion ($16.8 million) - It: Chapter Two (2019)
¥1.78 billion ($14.7 million) - School Ghost Stories 3 (1997)
¥1.75 billion ($14.2 million) - The Ring (2002)
¥1.70 billion ($6.9 million) - Lifeforce (1985)
¥1.65 billion ($10.2 million) - Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1995)
¥1.60 billion ($12.9 million) - The Others (2002)
¥1.55 billion ($12.5 million) - Ringu (1998)
¥1.50 billion ($13.7 million) - One Missed Call (2003)
¥1.35 billion ($17.3 million) - Sadako 3D (2012)
¥1.22 billion ($10.5 million) - As the Gods Will (2014)
¥1.10 billion ($9.5 million) - Ju-On: The Grudge 2 (2003)
¥1.02 billion ($10.8 million) - The Complex (2013)
¥1.01 billion ($8.7 million) - One Missed Call 2 (2005)
¥1.00 billion ($9.5 million) - Sadako vs. Kayako (2016)

And everyone, feel free to either ask about a film you don't see on the list or even suggest one for me to add. If it's from a well-known franchise and isn't on the list, then it likely missed.

I really hate this genre though because it's very ambiguous. Most of the time, what's considered a "horror" film is just a film from another genre that has horror elements. So this list only includes films that are horror first, and anything else second. Not the other way around (think Resident Evil and many other action films, and a huge list of thrillers).

The missing actuals were released (updated above). This past weekend's Top 10 was only down 1.4% versus last year.

Hi Corpse,

Could it be possible to compare the evolution of the figures from Violet Evergarden The Movie with the ones from Violet Evergarden Gaiden from last year?

Thanks for the great job by the way :)

Of course.

Also reporting that Demon Slayer: Mugen Train will be opening at all 38 IMAX theaters in the country when it debuts on October 16th. Advance ticket sales for those showings, in addition to standard showings, are being limited to 6 per-account due to high demand.

And prior to the film's debut, the anime's first season will receive two special TV broadcasts. On this upcoming Saturday, October 3rd, episodes 1-13 will be broadcast from 1PM-7:30PM. And episodes 14-26 will receive their special broadcast the following Saturday, October 10th, from 1PM-7:30PM as well. Over the course of these broadcasts, there will be exclusive interviews with the cast.

The film begins immediately following the conclusion of season one of the anime and will adapt the next story arc of the manga (a relatively short, but high energy and emotional arc), versus going the original story route that nearly all other anime films do. The first 4.5 million moviegoers will also receive a spin-off prequel manga written by the author herself, covering the first mission of one of the film's central characters.

Here you go!

Violet Evergarden Gaiden: Eternity and the Auto Memories Doll (2019)
¥141,000,000 ($1.3 million), 0, ¥220,000,000 ($2.1 million)
¥100,320,100 ($927,000), -29%, ¥496,000,000 ($4.6 million)
¥x55,669,700 ($517,000), -46%, ¥661,000,000 ($6.1 million)
¥x32,288,400 ($299,000), -42%, ¥717,815,000 ($6.6 million)

Violet Evergarden: The Movie (2020)
¥252,281,500 ($2.4 million), 0, ¥559,522,200 ($5.3 million)
¥131,910,200 ($1.3 million), -48%, ¥813,039,200 ($7.7 million)

I don't have any more data on Gaiden. It didn't reach ¥1 billion, so its final total was reported at the end of the year. You might be able to find a studio article mentioning the final total around the time of the home video release, but it's doubtful that exists given the gross. So, my best guess is that it finished between ¥775-800 million ($7.1-7.6 million). That means that the current film in release has very, very likely already outgrossed it!

Not a very exciting weekend, especially compared to the last 6-8 weeks.

Tenet achieves a great third weekend though, and was able to defend its hold atop the box-office. Depending on where the actual figure ends up, after just three weeks in release it has already outgrossed The Dark Knight and possibly Dunkirk as well. And it's a lock to reach the ¥2 billion milestone now, so it'll end up outgrossing The Dark Knight Rises to become Nolan's second biggest film in the market after Inception. It should get near a ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million) total.

The Asadas!, I would say, opened below expectations, becoming one of the first films not appealing to younger audiences to under-perform on opening weekend. But I won't call it a disappointment at this time because: 1. Sometimes opening weekends aren't indicative of a final total (especially in a leggy market like Japan) and 2. This could definitely be a weekday film that appeals toward much older moviegoers (50-65+), and these films can earn more than 60% of their total on the weekdays versus weekends. We'll see what happens over the next few days.

And Trolls: World Tour bombed, but that's not surprising and completely expected. I don't even think the first one received a theatrical release in the market, and if it did, it was a limited release. While DreamWorks animated films have been able to find a little more success in the market after Toho-Towa took over distribution rights, it's still a rare occurrence when one does find success in the market.

I'll have more analysis when when I post the Weekend Actuals tomorrow. The holdovers, a couple aside, largely experienced rough drops this weekend based on estimates. This isn't exactly unusual for this time of year as October is one of the weakest months of the year (weakest on average), but I was expecting some better holds and hope I underestimate a bit.
