Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Actuals (09/05-06); Charts Upd
Later today I'll be posting the updated Top Grossing Film Franchises list. I usually update and post it each year in February or March, shortly after Eiren publishes the Yearly Data Results (which includes final earnings for films) in late-January, but I forgot this year for some reason. Thankfully I noticed this after going back and looking at the Kamen Rider/Super Sentai franchises from this morning's posts.

Detective Conan will probably become the top grossing franchise in a few years, but it will have to sustain its very high box office success for decades to do the same in terms of attendance. It's been doing about 2.5-3m more entries than Doraemon each year these past few years (and will lose 2.3m this year) which means at this rate it will take about 20 to 25 years.

Yeah, Detective Conan should take the top spot in gross in four-six years assuming no major shifts from it or Doraemon. But yeah, I don't think anything will ever catch Doraemon in admissions. Detective Conan is pretty much the only franchise that stands a chance, but it probably won't catch up until near 2050.

The only thing that might help Detective Conan catch up a bit faster, and it's a very depressing thought, is if Japan doesn't get its population decline under control in the next 20-25 years (preferably, earlier). Japan's number of births fell below 900,000 last year, the lowest number of births since 1899 (when records began...), and the country's population fell over 500,000.

Only 12% of Japan's population is under 14 now (and only 8% are under 10!). That's a severe 50% decline in people under 14 since 1980 when 24% of the country was under 14.

And 29% of Japan's population is over 65 now (and 5% are over 80!). And that's a whopping 215% higher than in 1980 when 9% of the county was over 65.

Doraemon's audience is almost exclusively children, and with less and less children in the country, its box-office will eventually suffer. Detective Conan has a much broader appealing audience, mostly adults, so the potential population collapse shouldn't affect it as hard.

But i don't think detective Conan will be there until 2050. I expect it to end by 2030 because Gosho Aoyama is ageing and in my opinion the manga shouldn't go beyond 2030 and anime would also probably end by that time.

2050 and 2030!! Japan is the only market where we can talk such longevity of a franchise. Its always fascinating to hear this time and time again.

I think Doraemon films from 1980 - 1999 have only distributors income reported but if we actually add real revenue of Doraemon' s film from 1980 - 1999 it should be much higher and it will be 1st on revenue list.

Thanks, I'll definitely use this data in my argument on the internet on how X franchise is less/more popular than Y franchise.

The manga, at least the main series, may come to an end at some point in the next 10-15 years, but the chances of the anime ending then (or at all) is very slim. So I don't think the film franchise will end anytime soon, certainly not in the next 10-15 years. Aoyama can still provide character designs, original storylines, etc., for the anime and film productions ((like Toriyama already does for the Dragon Ball films, and Oda does for the One Piece films) for a long time (he's only 57).

Thanks for mentioning this because I forgot to update it AND Crayon Shin-chan before posting. And with them finally out of the way, Kamen Rider remains the only remaining franchise with vast distributor income counts/estimates. We got Godzilla's revenue figure, another franchise in the unknown for a long time, back in 2018.

Also, I added Frozen (the only franchise with 2 films to make the list) and Toy Story to the list when I posted it yesterday, but edited them in about an hour later, so some may have missed them.

Either way, I'll repost the updated list in a bit after I calculate and convert the new USD totals for Doraemon and Crayon Shin-chan. I'll also work on getting Godzilla's estimated USD total.

AND IF THERE'S A FRANCHISE YOU THINK MIGHT MAKE THE LIST, INQUIRE ABOUT IT SOON. I'm pretty confident I didn't miss any, but let me know. Super Sentai, perhaps, but it's always earned less than Kamen Rider and has a few less films, most with unknown grosses. It might make the admissions list, but I doubt it'd make the revenue list.

Godzilla's USD estimate isn't going to be possible, I'm afraid. There doesn't seem to be any historical data of the exchange rate before 1969/1970, meaning almost a third of the Godzilla films can't be converted. I probably knew this at some point too, otherwise I would have worked the franchise's total out already.

I know it obviously hasn't made the list yet, but I suspect Evangelion has a half-decent chance of making it if the last film ever comes out. The new trilogy currently adds up to ~¥11.2b (2+4+5.2), while Wikipedia, assuming its accurate, has End of Evangelion at ¥2.47b and Death&Rebirth at ¥1.87b (those may include re-releases). If accurate that's ¥15.5b so far. The finale would need to come in a bit below Q's ¥5.2bn to lock in ¥20b over 6 entries. Worth keeping an eye on at least.

That's all accurate.

I imagine that the finale, 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time--which was scheduled to be released in June (at long last) but got delayed due to the pandemic--will become the biggest film in the series. 3.0 (or Q) received a bit of a mixed-reaction, but the Evangelion series has a very, very devoted fanbase that I'm positive will show up again. And finale films with a dedicated fanbase have a good track-record of increasing in the market as long as they don't outright suck. Plus, the current 8-year wait, likely to become a 9-year wait unless they announce it for December, could benefit it some too.

I am curious about the release date though. It's not a film that can be released under a 50% theater capacity restriction in place in rural prefectures. If urban theaters are allowed to reach 100% by the end of the year, I can see them scheduling it for December. But if not, it probably won't open until next summer (June).

Corpse, then what about Demon slayer film releasing next month? Will it be able to perform well in 50% capacity restrictions?

I was about to post that beginning on September 19th, theaters in urban prefectures may be able to operate back at 100% again.

The government just announced that they are lifting the 5,000 person limit at large venues (think stadiums and arenas), and they'll now be able to hold up to 50% of their capacity instead. And for smaller venues, and this is the important part because I'm thinking movie theaters fall under this category, the 50% capacity restriction is being lifted completely. The box-office has been performing well at 50% (it's been just about normal for a month+ now), but the 50% restriction obviously affects how a big film is able to perform in its debut.

Since this was just announced heading into the weekend, none of the theater chains have a notice up of any changes yet, but I'll keep a watch on this for sure. As for the Demon Slayer film, yes, it would be negatively impacted with the 50% capacity restriction in place, and a potential record opening weekend would be spoiled. So we'll know very soon if the "small venues" applies to movie theaters. (I'm 99% sure it does though!).

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Biggest Film Franchises Updated
Crayon Shin-chan: Crash! Rakuga Kingdom and the Almost Four Heroes, the 28th-entry in the long-running animated franchise, opens this weekend. It's traditionally released in mid-April every year, but it was delayed due to the pandemic and was rescheduled for this weekend instead.

Based on Saturday's estimates, it's going to open at #1 with around ¥275 million ($2.6 million), but could reach ¥300 million ($2.8 million) if the Sunday increase is high enough. This would be 20/25% below the opening weekends of the last several films, but it's pretty close to the franchise's standard debut between ¥300-400 million. So, pretty good start, especially if it comes in closer to/above ¥300 million. I've never put together a Crayon Shin-chan Box Office History chart in the past since it's a smaller franchise versus Doraemon, Pokemon Detective Conan, etc., but I may put it together next week.

If urban theaters do go back to operating at 100% on September 19th, we could see the family-skewing films in release see an uptick (or at least hold very, very well) for awhile afterwards if some families have held off seeing them as a result of the current seating restrictions. Japan is a country with reserved-seating, so they've blocked off every other seat, meaning families would have issues sitting together (or at least, side-by-side) under the current 50% restriction.

Good weekend.

Crayon Shin-chan: Crash! Rakuga Kingdom and the Almost Four Heroes opened well, about 20/25% below that of its recent predecessors, but also pretty close to the standard debut of the franchise. Perfectly fine start, especially with the 50% capacity restriction in urban prefectures right now. This is the 28th-entry in the film franchise, and while they are traditionally released in mid-April every year, this year's release was delayed to this weekend due to the pandemic.

All the holdovers had excellent holds:

From Today, It's My Turn! achieved blockbuster status by exceeding ¥5 billion after its ninth-week of release and may have hit 4 million admissions as well. It is the first film released in 2020 to achieve blockbuster status. This is an incredible accomplishment, and it will probably finish as high as ¥5.5 billion ($51/52 million).

I can go on and on about how every film in release right now is performing very well, Onward aside, but I'll save the rest for the Weekend Actuals analysis tomorrow. The box-office is thriving, and it could improve even further if theaters go back to operating at 100% on September 19th (just in time for Tenet and many more films debuting).

Top Ten just 27 % down compared to last year - will weekend 38 or 39 be the first Corona weekends to improve compared to a year ago?

And note that it's only down 27% despite the 50% capacity restriction in urban prefectures (which account for 80% of the box-office normally).

If the urban theaters go back to 100% next week, I imagine the box-office will more or less be back on par with prior years because the movies themselves are already performing very well.

Corpse is the movie business thriving because other entertainment options are not yet open (like TV, anime, manga etc.) or everything else is open and theaters are the last things to open?

Besides the capacity restrictions in the rural prefectures, which are being completely lifted next week outside of large venues (arenas, stadiums, etc.) but they're expanding from a 5,000 person limit up to 50% capacity limit (significant increase), everything has been relatively normal since mid-July.

TV shows, anime, manga, etc., had some delays from May-July where new episodes of most TV shows and/or anime got delayed, and some manga releases were pushed back by a month (authors and their editors had to adapt to analog in some cases), but they've all been back on schedule since July for the most part. Just like how the box-office has been relatively normal since then as well, it just took a few weeks to get enough news films released in theaters for the box-office to begin approaching normal levels again.

Will Toho be releasing another Shin-chan movie in April 2021 or will they only be releasing Conan 24 ?

I expect we'll know in the next 24-48 hours if urban theaters are going back to 100% as part of the government's plan to completely lift capacity restrictions for "small venues" on September 19th. None of the major chains have showtimes or reservations available after September 17th, so I think they're working all of their screen and seating allocating out if they do.

I haven't seen any news on a Crayon Shin-chan film for next April, but I imagine there will be. This year's film was delayed just weeks before the shutdown, so it was definitely a finished production. And while I'm not sure when they begin working on the next film, I wouldn't expect the shutdown to postpone next year's release as they didn't really lose much time to make it.

Detective Conan was delayed a full year because they're a bit higher budget now as they've become blockbusters releases, and nearing uber-blockbuster territory. They need to be released in a market fully at 100% capacity. This allows them plenty of time to prepare the next film for 2022 since this year's release was moved to April 2021.

The Top 10 came in a little below estimates, but they still delivered a good total.

>Crayon Shin-chan: Crash! Rakuga Kingdom and the Almost Four Heroes, the 28th-entry in the long-running animated franchise opened well, selling 212,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 364 screens, and sold 233,592 admissions after its first three-days in release. This debut is about 25% or so below the opening weekends of the last few films in the series, but I'd consider it a win with the capacity restrictions in place and the reschedule release outside of its traditional mid-April slot. Expect a finish between ¥1.5-2.0 billion ($15-20 million).

>Stigmatized Properties delivered another good hold, selling 105,000 admissions in its third-weekend, bringing its 17-day admissions above 1 million with 1,093,799. It's definitely going to reach the ¥2 billion ($20 million) milestone now, and will probably finish near ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million).

>Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur keeps putting up the strong holds and has locked up reaching the ¥3 billion ($30 million) milestone. It has sold 2.36 million admissions after six-weeks in release, and will end up selling over 2.5 million.

>Break the Silence: The Movie (BTS movie) enjoyed a healthy four-day opening, selling 105,492 admissions since opening on Thursday across 265 screens.

>The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese and Midway didn't put up impressive figures on their own, but they are notably strong for being released by independent distributors Phantom Film and Kino Films, respectively, which is another sign of a strong box-office. Their weekend frame admissions haven't been released, but the former sold 106,508 admissions after its first three-days in release, while the latter sold 86,320 admissions after its first three-days.

>From Today, It's My Turn! achieved blockbuster status by exceeding ¥5 billion after its ninth-week of release and also exceeded 4 million admissions with 4,012,663. It became the first film released in 2020 to achieve blockbuster status. This is an incredible accomplishment, and it will probably finish as high as ¥5.5 billion ($51/52 million) on 4.3 million admissions.

>Onward still isn't holding too well, and unless it's really, really able to take advantage of the upcoming four-day holiday weekend (Sept. 19-22), is probably going to finish below Brave and become Pixar's lowest-grossing film in the market. As I've mentioned, there wasn't much going for this one even before the pandemic delayed it, but almost every other film released since July has been meeting/exceeding expectations, so I don't really know why this one is under-performing so much.
