I remember you mentioned this somewhere else but is Mulan releasing exclusively on D+ in Japan Corpse? Given that theaters are almost fully functional there it seems missed opportunity to not release it in theaters.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: September Release Schedule
Disney+ exclusive, indeed. The service launched about half-a-year early back in June (originally planned for Fall/Winter 2020), so I believe releasing Mulan exclusively there is a marketing strategy to promote Disney+ since the live-action Disney remakes do very, very well in the market.

The box-office is largely back to normal despite the 50% capacity restrictions in the urban prefectures, and has been for over a month now. We even have a film (From Today, It's My Turn!) about to achieve blockbuster status (¥5 billion+), so Mulan could have performed well.

Ultimately, I think Disney would have earned more out of it from a theatrical release. It may not have reached the heights of the other live-action remakes, but I really doubt it would have finished below ¥5 billion (~$50 million) and would have expected much more than that, perhaps around ¥7/8 billion ($65-75 million).

I went into some detail on this on the last page, but basically: While streaming/digital has become more popular in Japan, it's still behind the majority of the world as an entertainment option. The Japanese are a materialist people in this regard--they still buy CDs (physical music sales is still a major industry in Japan, and ranks #1 in the world now), and DVDs/Blu-Rays, and they rent movies from video stores (so much that weekly rankings are provided), etc.. So having to pay what I'm guessing is the equivalent of $30 (and it might be higher in Japan) in addition to a monthly fee to watch a movie once (unless I'm mistaken, please correct me) and not own it, even digitally, much less physically, doesn't strike me as an appealing option for many. But this is likely the very reason why Disney decided to release it on Disney+, to attract more potential subscribers to the service.

What was the attendance like for Mamoru Hosoda's Mirai of the Future? I understand it didn't live up to commercial expectations. Is Mirai viewed as an outlier or has it changed ideas of what Hosoda is capable of?

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Mamoru Hosoda Box-Office History
Its performance was decent, but less than expected. It's hard to say if its under-performance means that director Mamoru Hosoda reached his peak back in 2012-2015. I think we need to see what he has coming out next before ultimately determining his box-office status. However, Mirai did win the Best Animated Picture Award, keeping Hosoda's perfect win-streak (4/4) intact at the Japan Academy Prize ever since they introduced the category.

There isn't really any information regarding his next film, besides him stating that it'll be "completely different from Mirai" (indicating a possible shift from a sibling storyline). Summer 2021 would have been the presumed release date, I believe, but it's possible that COVID-19 has slowed production some, so I'm expecting it in 2022 instead. Here is his box-office history:

Mamoru Hosoda's Box-Office History:

Opening Weekends:
¥667.0 million ($5.5 million) / 494,170 - The Boy and the Beast (2015)
¥400.1 million ($3.6 million) / 295,828 - Mirai of the Future (2018)

N/A - The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)

Post Re: Japan Box Office (And More)
I'm not going to report the Weekly Video Game Sales like I did for a couple months, when waiting for theaters to reopen, but I am going to provide occasional (maybe monthly) updates when they're worth posting. These updates will basically only happen when a video game achieves a notably high first week in sales, or when a game ends up achieving a notable cumulative sales total.

So I'm updating the Best Selling Video Games of All-Time today because of how far Animal Crossing: New Horizons has climbed up the charts. It's now the 7th best-selling video game ever in Japan (likely #3/4 after digital sales are included), and continues to sell very well. It'll certainly end up exceeding 6 million retail units sold, and might end up approaching or exceeding 7 million.

And as Nintendo releases the overall sales with digital sales included each quarter, the game is probably going to eventually surpass 10 million overall and take the #1 spot away from the original Pokemon games which have been #1 for almost 25-years(!).

Best Selling Video Games of All-Time (Japan) [3 Million Retail Units+]:

01. 10.22 million - Pokemon Red/Blue/Green (GB/Pokemon Co.) [02.27.96]

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: September Release Schedule
The New Mutants movie the latest in the X-Men series I wonder if their are still plans for a theatrical release or not in Japan because X-Men movies usually by the time they release earlier in other countries before A Japan release usually have their Japanese release dates set In stone. But looking at the eiga(https://eiga.com/movie/88483/) and https://20thcenturystudios.jp websites, also no Japanese trailer it seem no plans for New Mutants at the moment to get a theatrical release in Japan. I wonder the holdup like is Disney abandoning plans for a Theatrical release for New Mutants in Japan and possibly sending it straight to video or streaming?

It's too dark for Disney brand to be released on D+. Not sure on theatrical release but I don't see it getting a D+ release for sure.

New Mutants is still a 20th Century Fox distributed film in Japan, so it won't go to Disney+.

I don't see anything regarding a theatrical release. I wouldn't say it's not being released theatrically though, as it could end up being released sometime in 2021. I know it's been delayed to death, but it's not unusual for low-potential films like this to be released up to a year later*. However, the X-Men franchise has pretty much fallen off a cliff since First Class, with every X-Men film since bombing worse than the last, so I wouldn't be surprised if it skips theaters and just goes to home video.

*The Addams Family and Midway are both releasing this month in Japan, so they serve as perfect examples of this.

Pretty good weekend to begin September. No notable opener, but the first weekend of September rarely has a notable debut anyway as it's the first post-Summer/Summer Vacation weekend.

>Stigmatized Properties achieves a second weekend atop the box-office, and delivered the necessary hold that should get it above the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone.

>Tapestry continues to do well for Toho, and has locked up reaching the ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million) mark. It should finish around ¥1.7/1.8 billion ($16/17 million).

>Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur held well in its first full post-Summer weekend, and is still on track to reach the ¥3 billion (~$30 million) milestone. The 40th entry in the franchise will finish 30-40% below the last several films in the series, but it'll also end up above the lower-tier films as well. All in all, I believe it's performed well outside of its traditional March release and having to perform under a 50% capacity limit in urban areas, which is especially difficult for families.

>Onward experiences a rough third weekend decline, and as a result... might not outgross Brave now and end up as Pixar's lowest-grossing film in the market. There is still a small chance it beats Brave to avoid that fate (Silver Week in mid-Sept. will help some), but it's very unlikely.

>Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel III - Spring Song received a 4DX expansion this weekend, so it enjoyed a good hold. It could have even held a little better than I estimated since 4DX tickets are very expensive. Things are still looking good for it to outgross its predecessor and become the highest-grossing film of the trilogy.

>From Today, It's My Turn! is now less than ¥100 million away from reaching the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion, and depending on the actual from this weekend, is looking to reach the mark on Thursday or Friday this week. It seemed very doubtful that Summer 2020 would have a blockbuster film, but this film really delivered. Expect it to finish around ¥5.3 billion ($50/51 million) and 4.1/4.2 million admissions.

Nice upticks across the board versus yesterday's estimates. This is a decent start to September, and there are a few notable films to come that should keep the month interesting.

>Stigmatized Properties achieved a second-consecutive weekend atop the box-office, selling an additional 190,207 admissions in its sophomore frame, bringing its 10-day admissions up to 783,000. The second weekend hold, and two-week total, are good enough that a total above ¥2 billion (~$20 million) is very likely.

>Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur managed to edge out Tapestry to climb to second place over its fifth-weekend of release, selling a further 111,000 admissions over the weekend, bringing its 31-day admissions up to an impressive 2.24 million. The 40th entry in the long-running franchise is likely to reach the ¥3 billion (~$30 million) milestone. And while that will be about a third less than the last few films in the film series, it's higher than the lower-tier films and not far off from what used to be the standard gross for a Doraemon film. This is certainly a respectable result given the release date change and capacity limits in place.

>Tapestry slipped to third place, selling an additional 100,000 admissions over its third weekend, bringing its 17-day admissions up to 921,000. The figures for this film are particularly impressive or noteworthy, but they are sort of your normal/expected numbers for a film like this, so I'd consider it a good sign for the box-office moving forward.

>Onward was looking to finish slightly above Brave to avoid becoming Pixar's lowest-grossing film in the market, but after this poor hold, it's probably not going to do any of that after all. And I wouldn't put the blame on the pandemic really, either. Some of it, sure, but just about everything else released in the past 8-weeks has either come close to expectations or have even exceeded them, so I think this film was ultimately destined to fail in the market.

>Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel III - Spring Song received a 4DX expansion this weekend, so as a result, delivered an excellent third-weekend hold. It also continues to outpace its predecessor, and baring a collapse next week, it's going to end up as the highest-grossing film in the trilogy. Very impressive.

>From Today, It's My Turn! is now less than ¥50 million away from reaching the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion! This was the first film to open after urban theaters expanded from 25% capacity to 50% capacity (where they have remained), yet it was still capable of achieving blockbuster status. After 52-days in release, its admissions are nearing 4 million, having sold 3.92 million admissions.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Actuals (09/05-06); Charts Upd
Since this is the Japan BO thread I just decided to post here. I have to say I just finished watching all of Super Sentai which Power Rangers is adapted from on the ad-supporting streaming service Tubi, and I have to say that Super Sentai is better than Power Rangers. My favorite Super Sentai show would have to be Dairangers where the mechas and the white ranger of season 2 of MMPR are based off of.

Did you watch ALL of Super Sentai? :whaa:

Or just from the early 1990's when America began adapting it into the Power Rangers? Even starting from the early 1990's though, that's still around 1,500 episodes or so.

Impressive! Are you going to watch the films next? There's a lot of them as well. There's over 40 theatrical releases beginning in the 90's (and about 60 now overall). Some of them, largely from the last 10-years, are collaboration films with Kamen Rider.

No because they are not available on Tubi from Shout Factory. Have you watched any of the Super Sentai's?

Cool. I've watched some, but I'm not overly familiar with the series. I always have to keep track of them (and Kamen Rider) multiple times a year though since there's usually two new Super Sentai films released every year, and three new Kamen Rider films every year. One of them each year is typically a collaboration.
