09 (---) ¥x37,766,300 ($357,000), 0, ¥x37,766,300 ($0.4 million), Given: The Movie (Aniplex) NEW
10 (07) ¥x25,735,640 ($243,000), -41%, ¥369,104,870 ($3.5 million), Grand Blue (Warner Bros.) WK3

Note: Weekend drops are a bit higher than usual due to coming out of the Obon Festival holiday period.

>Tapestry opened atop the box-office in its debut weekend, selling a solid 171,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 350 screens, and has sold 242,709 admissions after its first three-days in release (plus previews from two-weeks ago). Pretty good start, and since romantic films typically have good legs, we can probably expect a finish around ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million), or possibly a tad higher.

>Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel III - Spring Song drops to second place with an expected large drop, however, its second weekend hold is better than both its predecessors, as is its second weekend gross. And despite a slightly lower opening than the second film of the trilogy, its two-week total is now ahead by 1.4%. The second film grossed ¥1.67 billion, so that'll be the number to beat as we can expect a similar, though probably slightly higher, finish. The final film of the trilogy will also be receiving 4DX screenings next month.

>Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur holds steady as it slipped to third place in its third-weekend of release, selling an additional 164,000 admissions to bring its cumulative admissions after 17-days in release up to 1.84 million. The 40th entry in the long-running series has one week left of Summer vacation dailies, and it really needs to make the most of them as weekdays for family films plummet in September. As such, it'll be aiming for a finish at the ¥3 billion (~$30 million) milestone, but will certainly need a couple strong weekend holds next month to reach it.

>Onward debuts in fourth place, selling 118,863 admissions over the weekend frame across 523 screens, and sold 159,535 admissions after its first three-days in release. No spinning this one, it's a disappointing result for Disney, certainly not the way they wanted to get restarted in the market. But it's not entirely all bad news, as this debut is STILL higher than Brave's, so it's not Pixar's lowest-opener in the market. The film will be aiming to reach the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone, and while it should get there, it's not guaranteed by opening so late in the Summer.

>From Today, It's My Turn! continues its amazing run, and after six-weeks in release, has sold 3.59 million admissions and will probably finish just above 4 million admissions. As for a final total, that'll be good enough to also get it above the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion+ (~$50 million), meaning that Summer 2020 won't go without a blockbuster after all!

>The Confidence Man JP: Episode of the Princess is now a mere ¥43 million away from outgrossing its predecessor, which it will do in just a few days (probably on Wednesday). It's also about to exceed the ¥3 billion milestone, and still has enough in the tank to finish decently above that mark as well. Expect a very good finish around ¥3.2 billion ($30 million).

Well I'm not sure how good that is for Given (it was a smaller release at least so maybe its not quite as bad as it seems) but I hope it meets expectations even with all the covid related delays over the past months. I really want Blue Lynx to continue to make movies. Umibe no Etranger is in a couple weeks and is from them as well so I hope that does better.

I'd consider it "good" since it was a limited release as you mentioned, playing on just 30 screens. Some anime films have done better on similar screen counts, while others have done worse, so... I'd consider it a fine opening, especially since some of its showings were likely under the 50% capacity restrictions, and we both know that most of these limited release anime films frequently sell out a lot of their showings.

Welcome to the forums, by the way. Long-time lurker?

I'm amused that Tenet doesn't get delayed because it was already scheduled at September 18 in the first place ;)

Yeah, it's release date has been set in stone for a long time, probably since the beginning of the year.

Also, this is probably old news to many at this point, but Disney decided to release Mulan on Disney+ in Japan as well. The service launched back in June, several months earlier than originally planned (Fall/Winter 2020), so I'm guessing they're using the film as a strategy to get more subscribers.

I understand the decision from a Disney+ marketing perspective--promoting the service with a high interest film in a potentially lucrative market that has been slow to adopt streaming services--but I don't like this decision. The box-office has proven for the past four or five weeks now that it could certainly have supported the film, and would still have likely allowed it to achieve blockbuster status (¥5 billion+ gross) if released in July/August, or later on in the year.

I mean it's on viral that cinema owner in France tears down Mulan poster

Anyway, I think there's some secret reason Mulan is direct to D+ in key countries because Pro-China comments made by Liu Yifei and Donnie Yen which are main characters. It may not damage Disney brand as of now but in the future, like a next decade or next century, if Disney still want to existed, it must avoid any route that will lead to cancel culture ending.

In Japan's case, I'm pretty confident in saying it was due to promote, and get more subscribers for, Disney+. Disney is big in Japan as you know, but streaming has only caught on in the past year or two. And Mulan would certainly entice many who may have otherwise skipped the service (or at least some who were holding out) to sign up to watch it. At least I presume so given the success of their live-action remakes in the market.

On the other hand... the Japanese, while they've begun to join the digital age, are still a material people and paying what I'm guessing is the equivalent of $30 could be off-putting since they wouldn't own it. Or, it could simply be seen as an expensive rental, and since movie rentals are still fairly popular (there are still weekly charts of the most rented movies or home media in general), it could be an attractive approach.

Whatever the case, a theatrical release could have still proven successful and I think their decision to scrap it was premature.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Star Wars Box Office History
I was looking back to see if I missed updating any charts after the New Year and before COVID-19 hit, and I did! Here is the Star Wars Box-Office History update with Episode VIIII now included. And before getting asked, no, COVID-19 didn't prevent it from outgrossing Episode VIII. It was already concluding its run by then (early April).

The Star Wars franchise is interesting for the fact that with each separate trilogy, the first film is the biggest, followed by the second film, and finally the third film. They just naturally decline after the hype of the first film. (Technically Episode VI doesn't follow this trend as it grossed more than Episode V, but since it sold less admissions than Episode V, it still kind of does.)

Star Wars Box-Office History:

Opening Weekends (3-Day/Previews Included):
01. ¥1.879 billion / 1,357,977 - Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
02. ¥1.619 billion / 1,044,330 - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
03. ¥1.617 billion / 1,058,269 - Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)
04. ¥1.604 billion / 1,138,689 - Star Wars: Episode II - Attack on the Clones (2002)
05. ¥1.570 billion / 1,018,851 - Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
06. ¥920.6 million / 599,943 - Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
07. ¥658.3 million / 486,380 - Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

Note: The opening weekends for the original trilogy are unknown, as is the opening weekend for Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace, which is surprising. However, Episode I reportedly sold 500,000+ tickets on its first day, and if Sunday behaved the same way then as it does today, it should have sold 1.1/1.2 million tickets on its opening weekend.

Totals:
01. ¥12.70 billion ($109.9 million) / 8.30 million - Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
02. ¥11.63 billion ($96.3 million) / 7.48 million - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
03. ¥9.35 billion ($78.4 million) / 6.80 million - Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
04. ¥9.17 billion ($82.7 million) / 6.60 million - Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
05. ¥7.51 billion ($66.3 million) / 5.05 million - Star Wars: Last Jedi (2017)
06. ¥7.27 billion ($66.5 million) / 4.85 million - Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
07. ¥6.58 billion ($33.9 million) / 6.87 million - Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1978)
08. ¥5.30 billion ($22.2 million) / 4.85 million - Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)
09. ¥4.95 billion ($21.9 million) / 4.90 million - Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
10. ¥4.63 billion ($39.9 million) / 3.08 million - Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
11. ¥2.14 billion ($19.2 million) / 1.52 million - Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Top Grossing Animated Films
Weathering With You and Frozen II are now included on the Top Grossing Animated Films chart. But whereas COVID-19 didn't affect Frozen II since it ended its run a couple weeks prior to theaters closing, it actually helped Weathering With You and two other films on the list...

Weathering With You received a re-release in May when the first theaters reopened, adding ¥130 million ($1.2 million) to its former ¥14.06 billion ($130.5 million) total over the course of its re-release, for a new total of ¥14.19 billion ($131.7 million). It has been updated below.

And more impressively, once theaters reopened nationwide in late-June, Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke received significant re-releases on June 26th that are about to come to a close. Since their re-release, Spirited Away has earned an additional ¥855 million ($8.0 million) and Princess Mononoke has earned ¥853 million ($8.0 million). Also, another Studio Ghibli film, Tales From Earthsea, received a re-release on June 26th and earned ¥108 million ($1.0 million) before tracking ended. All these figures have been added to the chart below, and I'll update them further if Toho releases revised numbers in the future.

NOTE: All films that have received a re-release with reported figures will now be marked with an asterisk (*). And at the bottom of the list you'll find how much each film has earned in re-release so that number can then be subtracted from the total to get the film's original gross.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Postponed Films Reschedule Calendar
Shinzo Abe announced yesterday that he will resign as Prime Minister due to worsening health from ulcerative colitis. He became Japan's longest serving Prime Minister, assuming office back in 2012. He had previously served one-year as Prime Minister in 2007, but also had to reign due to his ulcerative colitis illness.

Abe is well-known for his "Abenomics" program, which helped the country's economy in his early years of ruling, and helped empower women in the workforce to compensate Japan's aging, declining population. But in recent years, the program suffered due to the U.S. trade war with China, and then it took a big hit this year when the coronavirus pandemic hit.

He will also be known for his long-tried, but failed efforts to eliminate Article 9, the pacifist clause, in Japan's post-war Constitution that was imposed by the United States after World War II. The article prevents Japan from using war as a means to settle international disputes, and also prevents the country from maintaining any armed forces with war potential.

And finally, he achieved high approval for his handling of the Heisei Era ending (1989-2019) when Emperor Akihito abdicated the throne (he was the first Emperor to abdicate in 200-years), and then when Prince Naruhito acceded to the throne last year to begin the Reiwa Era.

Abe's term isn't up until next year, but he will step down as soon as a successor is chosen. Japan's Prime Minister is chosen by their Parliament, and a successor is expected to be determined in just a couple of weeks. The LDP (ruling party), in coalition with the Komeito Party, holds the majority of seats, so the next Prime Minister is expected to be from the LDP.

Of course. Not sure how I could forget his role in getting the Olympics to come back to Japan. Coronavirus delayed it until next year, obviously, but still certainly a key accomplishment of his.

Probably going to go back to posting Weekend Forecasts next week. I think I've gathered enough data to provide fairly accurate forecasts again, in addition to Weekend Estimates on Sundays again as well.

Quick Weekend Preview:

Stigmatized Properties is going to close the month of August out with a good #1 debut, targeting an opening between ¥300-350 million (~$3 million+) based on its Saturday results. Its 3-day total could exceed ¥400 million (~$4 million).

And all the holdovers, especially those skewing towards families/children and teens, are doing very well since their weekdays suffered a bit from schools starting back a week or two early this year to make up lost days. Doraemon, for example, could be aiming for a single-digit weekend drop based on its Saturday performance, and many other films look likely to experience great 20/25% declines.

Good riddance to revisionist-history right-wingers, frankly, even if he'll unfortunately just be replaced by more of the same.

Very nice weekend to close out August.

>Stigmatized Properties delivers a good opening weekend, and certainly a welcomed one for distributor Shochiku as it likely more than doubled their previous highest opener this year. We can expect a total between ¥2-2.5 billion ($20-25 million) from this debut. Very good.

>Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur experienced an excellent hold on its fourth weekend, declining in the single-digits based on estimates. Since schools started back early this year, its weekdays were low heading into the weekend, so the great weekend hold is understandable. Its chances of reaching the ¥3 billion (~$30 million) milestone have gone up greatly as a result, and if it can achieve one or two more holds close to this in the coming weeks, then it'll likely get there.

>Tapestry might have edge out Doraemon for second place in revenue, but it'll be third in admissions. It enjoyed a great second weekend either way, and is very likely to exceed ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) now. In fact, it might make a run at the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone.

>Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel III - Spring Song continues to outperform its predecessor despite the slightly lower opening, and is likely to become the highest-grossing film in the trilogy. Its predecessor grossed ¥1.67 billion, so the finale should be aiming for ¥1.7 billion ($16 million) or a bit more. And let's see if Aniplex wants to make a play for ¥2 billion (~$20 million) following its 4DX expansion next month.

>Onward held well, but the combination of opening at the end of summer vacation along with its low-opening last week is going to keep its eventual total rather low. The good news is that if it can deliver another hold like this, or better, next week, then it's probably going to outgross Brave and reach the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone to avoid becoming Pixar's lowest-grossing film in the market.

>From Today, It's My Turn! continues its strong performance, and is now just a couple weeks away from reaching the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion (~$50 million). Thanks to its overperformance, Summer 2020 (and perhaps the 2020 calendar year itself) won't have to go without a blockbuster film.

>The Confidence Man JP: The Episode of the Princess enjoyed the best hold in the Top 10, and outgrossed its predecessor before even going into its sixth-weekend. It's been holding so well these past couple of weeks, that a total of ¥3.5 billion ($33 million or so) is looking likely. Despite performing under capacity restrictions due to the pandemic, it'll have increased 15-20% over its predecessor. From Today, It's My Turn! is the film of the summer given it's going to reach blockbuster status, but The Confidence Man JP 2 is a close second.

Ouch at Onward, though I doubt Disney is crying over lost money in Japan considering they made ¥2,7 billion from their mobage this month...

Strong weekend to close out August.

>Stigmatized Properties debuted atop the box-office, delivering Shochiku their best opener of the year by a massive margin (147% higher). The film sold an impressive 263,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 335 screens, and sold 343,727 admissions over its first three-days in release. This is a very good opening, and we can expect a total between ¥2-2.5 billion ($20-25 million) from it.

>Tapestry slips to second place in its sophomore frame, earning a great hold by selling a further 139,000 admissions over the weekend, bringing its 10-day admissions up to 637,000. Its second weekend was pretty impressive, but its weekdays were more so and could end up helping the film finish near the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone.

>Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur experienced an excellent hold on its fourth weekend, selling an additional 151,000 admissions, bringing its 24-day admissions up to 2.08 million. Its chances of reaching the ¥3 billion (~$30 million) milestone have gone up greatly as a result of this weekend, and if it can achieve one or two more holds close to this in the coming weeks, then it'll likely get there.

>Onward held well, selling 93,000 admissions in its second weekend to bring its 10-day admissions up to 340,000. But the combination of opening at the end of summer vacation, along with its low-opening last week, is going to keep its eventual total rather low. The good news is that if it can deliver another hold like this, or better, next week, then it's probably going to outgross Brave and reach the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone to avoid becoming Pixar's lowest-grossing film in the market.

>From Today, It's My Turn! continues its strong performance, selling an additional 98,000 admissions over its seventh-weekend of release, which brings its 45-day admissions up to an incredible 3.79 million. It's now just a couple weeks away from reaching the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion (~$50 million) and breaking 4 million admissions.. Thanks to its over-performance, Summer 2020 (and perhaps the 2020 calendar year itself) won't have to go without a blockbuster film.

>The Confidence Man JP: The Episode of the Princess enjoyed the best hold in the Top 10, and has outgrossed its predecessor.
