Animal Crossing: New Horizons continues to earn the bells at a record pace as it enjoys yet another week at #1. 6 million+ physical copies is likely assured, which would earn it a spot in the Top 5 Best Selling Video Games Ever in the market on physical copies alone. And once the digital sales are included, it's probably going to sell 8-9 million+, making it the second Best Selling Video Game Ever in the market, just behind the original Pokemon games. But it could overtake them as well, certainly not an impossibility, just too early to make that claim right now.

Don't want to speak too soon, but I wouldn't rule out a ¥1 billion+ ($10 million+) result for each of them if they play through late-August. I also believe Toho may want to release more Miyazaki films given how well the current three are performing. Granted, the three in release now are arguably his three most popular films, but Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki's Delivery Service would almost certainly perform similarly as well. The Castle of Cagliostro could also be an interesting choice if more re-releases are to come.

Monstrous first week for Demon Slayer Vol.21 (and the entire series). Demon Slayer is now only the second manga series to have a single volume sell over 2 million copies in its first week (the first being One Piece). And Vol. 21 is the first manga volume since 2014 (One Piece Vol. 73) to sell over 2 million copies, and it ranks as the 6th biggest first week in sales ever behind five One Piece volumes.

Demon Slayer has sold 56.9 million copies this year alone now (50% higher than the old record), and has sold over 80 million copies overall (71.618 million from Japan).

Best Selling Manga by Series of 2020 (Top 10): [11.18-07.05]

01. 56,927,398 (New All-Time Yearly Record) - Demon Slayer (Shueisha/Koyoharu Gotouge)
02. 5,591,575 - Kingdom (Shueisha/Yasuhisa Hara)
03. 5,115,500 est. - One Piece (Shueisha/Eiichiro Oda)
04. 4,839,310 est. - The Quintessential Quintuplets (Kodansha/Negi Haruba)
05. 3,997,712 - My Hero Academia (Shueisha/Kohei Horikoshi)
06. 3,870,392 - The Promised Neverland (Shueisha/Kaiu Shirai)
07. 3,839,033 - Haikyuu!! (Shueisha/Haruichi Furudate)
08. 2,576,600 est. - Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun (Square Enix/Iro Aida)
09. 2,503,115 est. - Spy x Family (Shueisha/Tatsuya Endo)
10. 2,334,100 est. - Attack on Titan (Kodansha/Hajime Isayama)

A few notes about these lists:

Spoiler: show
01. Any title that's highlighted is currently in the Weekly Top 50, whether remaining there since being released or resurfacing on the most recent weekly sales chart.
02. Any title that's not highlighted has fallen outside the Weekly Top 50, and the sales figure is the total that it last appeared on the weekly sales chart.
03. And while most titles won't reappear back in the Weekly Top 50 after falling off, there are two common factors that can often cause sales to increase again: a. If the title(s) has an ongoing anime and it's entered an important/popular arc, this can sometimes drive the sales of the manga. b. If the manga series itself has entered an important/popular arc, then past volumes can often see an increase in sales.
04. Consider the Best Selling Manga by Series list to be rough, but pretty accurate estimates. The top six series are practically 100% accurate, but the bottom four are less so. A manga series typically has a new volume released every 3 months on average, so the month before a new volume is released tends to be quite low and some series can sometimes falls outside of tracking range for a few weeks and require a bit of estimating until data is released.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (& More): Manga Sales (06.29-07.05)
Hello, guys. :)

Sorry for the lack of updates this month. I bought a house last year that we've been renovating, and we recently moved there this month.

And while it's exciting to finally be moved in, the moving itself was long and incredibly exhausting (logged almost 3,000 miles in driving alone). And once we finally got moved in, we had our first complications as homeowners on day one (leaky water pipe), followed by a few other problems over the past couple weeks we've had to address. It's a 19th century house (1890).

So... I've been tired and very busy to say the least. The good news is that things have begun to slow down and I should be able to provide updates in the coming days! I haven't had any time to track the Japan box-office since early July, but looking at the last three weekends, it's continuing to hold up nicely and there's a local film that opened last week that is doing incredible numbers (already at $20 million after 2 weeks).

Post Re: Japan Box Office (& More): July Weekend Updates (Ongoing
Thank you. I'll be posting the Top 10 for the last three weekends here in a bit.

Also, since the box-office seems to be growing and with more films coming up in August, including a number of postponed Spring films like Doraemon and Onward, I'll probably go back to just posting box-office updates again. (I don't really have the time to dedicate to everything else right now either.)

Note: The Dark Knight's re-release numbers have been added to its cumulative total, like the Marvel re-releases last month, while the re-release figures for the Hayao Miyazaki films are being reported separately. Once they finish their runs, I'll add them to the cumulative totals too.

Nothing particularly interesting from this weekend, besides the re-releases of Miyazaki's classics securing the Top 3 positions for a third-consecutive week, but just wait until the next update. A new release achieved the biggest opening weekend of 2020 so far to kick off the official Summer box-office season.

Talk about a surprising weekend. Granted, I wasn't following the box-office going into this weekend, but when I saw From Today, It's My Turn! open so high (biggest debut of 2020, second since Star Wars), it was certainly a shocking moment. It opened how it would have under regular conditions, if not arguably even higher than what expectations would have been normally.

The film, based on the popular TV show, sold a remarkable 486,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 359 screens, and sold 605,000 admissions over its first three-days in release. It also had an excellent second weekend and exceeded ¥2 billion ($19 million+) after just 10-days, and I'll have that weekend chart posted later this evening or early tomorrow.

There's another notable debut on the next chart as well, achieving the second best debut of 2020 (just behind From Today, It's My Turn).

Thank you, Tower.

The Weekend Actuals for July 25-26 will be posted shortly. It was another surprising weekend (with a debut from a sequel that topped its predecessor and earned the second best opening weekend of 2020), suggesting that the box-office is largely back to normal.

It feels nice to finally have the box-office looking like a box-office again!

>From Today, It's My Turn! defended its #1 position with an excellent second weekend hold, selling a further 389,000 admissions in its sophomore frame. And while that's very impressive following its big debut last week to kick-off the Summer box-office season, the fact that its 10-day total has already exceeded ¥2 billion (nearly $20 million) and 1.61 million admissions is remarkable. The Obon Festival holiday week is coming up in two weeks, so we can probably look forward to a total near ¥5 billion ($45-50 million) if it achieves another great week like this.

>The Confidence Man JP: Episode of the Princess, the second film based on the popular TV drama, settled for a second place debut, but its opening weekend was quite strong (especially its 4-day total from opening on a Thursday). The second film of the series sold 286,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 344 screens, and hit 648,000 admissions after its first four-days in release. The opening weekend is 5% higher than its predecessor, which isn't just a strong sign for any future films in the series, but also for the current state of the box-office itself to be able to support a sequel that opened higher--and will almost certainly gross more than--its predecessor. Expect a total around ¥3 billion ($25-30 million).

>The three Hayao Miyazaki re-releases continue to do well, and with Summer dailies in effect and Obon Festival coming up in two weeks, both Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away could end up grossing ¥1 billion ($10 million) in the end.
