Best Selling Manga by Series of 2020 (Top 10): [11.18-06.14]

01. 51,709,451 (New All-Time Yearly Record) - Demon Slayer (Shueisha/Koyoharu Gotouge)

10. 2,245,000 est. - Spy x Family (Shueisha/Tatsuya Endo)

A few notes about these lists:

Spoiler: show
01. Any title that's highlighted is currently in the Weekly Top 50, whether remaining there since being released or resurfacing on the most recent weekly sales chart.
02. Any title that's not highlighted has fallen outside the Weekly Top 50, and the sales figure is the total that it last appeared on the weekly sales chart.
03. And while most titles won't reappear back in the Weekly Top 50 after falling off, there are two common factors that can often cause sales to increase again: a. If the title(s) has an ongoing anime and it's entered an important/popular arc, this can sometimes drive the sales of the manga. b. If the manga series itself has entered an important/popular arc, then past volumes can often see an increase in sales.
04. Consider the Best Selling Manga by Series list to be rough, but pretty accurate estimates. The top six series are practically 100% accurate, but the bottom four are less so. A manga series typically has a new volume released every 3 months on average, so the month before a new volume is released tends to be quite low and some series can sometimes falls outside of tracking range for a few weeks and require a bit of estimating until data is released.

Re-release.

What's this? It's our first film to open (or earn) above ¥100 million(!) since Birds of Prey during the weekend of March 21st-22nd.

>Dolittle debuts in first place, selling 81,486 admissions over the weekend frame across a significant 707 screens, and sold 106,913 admissions over its first 3-days in release. As mentioned, this is the biggest opening in 3-months, and the debut itself isn't too bad. It's probably no less than half of what it would have opened at under regular conditions.

This was an important weekend for the box-office, having a very-wide opener( targeting a broader demographic than the other openers over the past six-weeks) succeed on this level. And the recent holdovers which also received wide/very-wide openings have been holding decently well. Let's hope the success of Dolittle and strength of the holdovers will be the prelude to a stronger box-office in the coming weeks/months.

Sonic the Hedgehog opens next weekend and will be the next big test for the box-office, so let's see if it can reach ¥150 million ($1.5 million) in its debut, or maybe even ¥200 million ($2 million) is a possibility?

It's truly a phenomenon on another level. It has broken many records, does so on a weekly basis now, and is easily on track to add more records in the coming months/year. There's truly nothing from the past that comes close in terms of its current sales and success. It could potentially sell 100 million copies (90 million+ is looking nearly assured) just this year alone. Needless to say, that's a ridiculous figure, nearly triple the highest known yearly sales figure for any series.

A film adaptation adapting the next story arc of the manga, directly following season 1 of the anime, is coming out in October. It'll be one to watch assuming theater capacity limits are lifted, COVID-19 concerns have decreased, etc.

Hello Corpse,
great job with the web.
I'm writing from Spain, and I'm insterested in Pain & Glory, the latest film of Almodovar. I know that it's been released in a very few number of theaters there but, even so, I would like to know if you have the data of the film.
Thank you in advance.

Sure. No actual figures were released for it, but I can provide a rough estimate for you.

Pain and Glory opened June 19th on 25 screens via Kino Films. I'm estimating it grossed just about ¥3,000,000 ($28,000) on 2,200 admissions or so over this past weekend frame (06/20-21), and right around ¥4,000,000 ($37,000) on 3,000 admissions or so over its first three-days in release (06/19-21). It either just made the Weekend Top 20 (literally 20th place) or barely missed (21st/22nd place).

I got my estimate by taking its actual admissions from the usual reported theaters, in this case accounting for 68% of its overall theater count, and adjusting up from there. Then, to get a rough revenue figure, I took the average ticket price in the market and adjusted that upward a bit since this film would certainly skew toward an adult (and likely male) audience.

And I have very interesting and exciting news to report this morning:

Three of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibi's most popular films, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind are receiving very wide re-releases this weekend, likely wider than their initial theatrical releases (definitely so in Nausicca's case).

With all the blockbusters being moved from July, and many notable Spring blockbusters that were postponed being rescheduled for August or later, this will certainly help the box-office during the month of July. The three Miyazaki films selected are among the most-viewed when they air on TV, often earning ratings around 20% (even higher pre-2010 or so) when they're broadcast.

Sonic the Hedgehog and Rambo: Last Blood are also opening this weekend, both receiving very wide releases. So this upcoming weekend is probably going to be pretty decent, certainly the biggest since early March this year at the very least.

Nice first week for The Last of Us 2. Probably not enough to get it to, say, 500,000 lifetime copies, but 400,000 should be doable (which would suggest 500,000 or even 600,000 with digital included).

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is finally dethroned, but I don't expect it'll stay out of the #1 spot too long. It's likely to exceed 5 million physical copies sold next week to become only the 11th video game in history to reach that milestone.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will exceed 3 million physical copies next week, refusing to fall outside of the weekly Top 10 after 3-years and 2-months in release.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (& More): Video Game Sales (06/15-21)
Before I post the Manga Sales for 06/15-21 later today, a quick box-office update:

The battle for #1 this weekend is going to be very close between all three Hayao Miyazaki re-releases (Spirited Away, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke), and Rambo: Last Blood. Spirited Away has the slight edge over the rest after Saturday by about 1,500 admissions right now at the usual locations (~70% of the market), but that's not much of a lead, and the other three films are ridiculously close in admissions after it with a mere 222 admissions separating them.

For Saturday: Spirited Away probably sold close to 40,000 admissions, while Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, and Rambo: Last Blood all sold 35,000+.

All four films listed above are on track to earn ¥100-¥125 million ($1-$1.2 million) this weekend.

Sonic the Hedgehog, however, isn't doing very well. Perhaps not surprising though since Japanese audiences generally shun Hollywood adaptations of domestic source material. Unless Sunday provides it with a big boost, it's going to debut in 6th place (behind Dolittle's second weekend) and might miss ¥50 million ($500,000).

This weekend will become the biggest at the box-office since the last weekend in February.

10. 2,324,100 est. - Attack on Titan (Kodansha/Hajime Isayama)

Sonic was always way more popular in the u.s and europe than japan.
I read Studio Ghibli was going to make a cgi animated film, i feel sad about that.

Sonic didn't look like something that will break out in Japan, it didn't do huge numbers in Singapore, Malaysia and India for a family blockbuster movie.

Thank you so much!

You're probably refer to Earwig and the Witch, an adaptation of the same author as Howl's Moving Castle.
1. It's not a theatrical release, it'll be on NHK channel this winter.
2. The director is Goro Miyazaki, Hayao's son.
3. Not the first time, Goro alreade made CGI TV series Ronja, the Robber's Daughter in 2014.

I'll have the Weekend Actuals for this past weekend posted either tonight or tomorrow morning. I'm going to be very busy over the next couple of weeks, so the somewhat regular schedule of posting the Weekend Actuals on Monday or Tuesday, and the Manga and Video Game Sales on Friday or Saturday, might be off a bit.

Okay, so first let me remind everyone that the Japanese market and domestic sites base their rankings in terms of weekend admissions, not revenue, and that the re-release of Spirited Away debuted in first place in admissions. Also, the re-release of Princess Mononoke came in second place in admissions, and the re-release of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind rounded out the Top 3 in admissions. All three films were re-released in 374 theaters, more than their initial theatrical release theater counts.

So, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli managed to take the Top 3 positions, which, of course, made the headline of all the box-office related news articles this past week. But unfortunately, admission figures weren't released for any of them. But I'd estimate that Spirited Away sold around 80,000, while Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa were very close, each probably selling around 75,000. And in Nausicaa's case, it didn't have any of its weekend figures revealed (which explains the estimate*), just its cumulative total since it was re-released in limited locations a couple weeks ago (which is why its total is higher).

>Rambo: Last Blood debuted down in fourth place in admissions, but with a higher average ticket price, managed to take the #1 spot in revenue. And unfortunately, its admissions weren't released. But since it ranked in fourth in admissions, I'd estimate it sold between 70,000-75,000 over the weekend frame since it was very close to both Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa as well.

>Sonic the Hedgehog debuted in sixth-place, selling 38,306 admissions over the weekend frame across 435 screens, and 47,433 admissions in its first three-days in release. This is a pretty disappointing result, I have to admit, but perhaps it was destined to disappoint regardless of the current circumstances as Hollywood adaptations of domestic properties typically disappoint. But also, as mentioned above by neo_wolf and Jack Sparrow, the Sonic brand wasn't ever particularly big in the market either.

>And finally, we had the re-release of Tales From Earthsea, also from Studio Ghibli (directed by Goro Miyazaki) making the Top 10 to give the studio four Top 10 films this weekend. It performed noticeably worse than the more popular Hayao Miyazaki films, but I wouldn't say it wasn't worth re-releasing or anything.

This weekend, June 27th-28th, was the biggest at the Japanese Box-Office since March 07th-08th, nearly four-months ago with the Top 10 earning ¥536 million ($5.2 million). So will we see more Studio Ghibli films receiving re-releases in the coming weeks/months? If this weekend is to go by, I'd say most definitely, at least among Hayao Miyazaki's catalog of films. A second "wave" of Studio Ghibli films could be released at the end July for sure.

>Animal Crossing: New Horizons reclaims the #1 spot, unsurprisingly, but perhaps a week earlier than expected. And, it exceeded 5 million physical copies this past week, making it just the 11th video game to ever sell over 5 million retail copies. Also, it's the first game released in 8-years, interestingly enough since the release of Animal Crossing: New Leaf on the 3DS, to have sold over 5 million copies in the market.

>Ring Fit Adventure continues to sell very well, up in sales week-to-week. As I mentioned when it broke 1 million copies a couple weeks ago, this is the first original IP from any developer on any console to sell over 1 million copies since Splatoon back in 2015.

>The Last of Us 2 experienced a very harsh second week decline, and will probably struggle to reach 300,000 physical copies as a result, let alone the 400,000 I was predicting last week. This will still be a decent number, but I'm sure Sony was probably expecting a little more. Of course, we don't know the digital sales at the moment, so once they're factored in, overall sales could still reach 500,000, which is respectable, especially for such a Western-style game.

>And finally, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe exceeded 3 million physical copies this week after achieving yet another week in the Top 10 after over 3-years in release. Mario Kart 8 (now a six-year old title), after including the sales of the original release on the Wii U, is the best-selling Mario Kart game of all-time worldwide. It's still charting in the weekly top 10 video game sales in both Japan and the U.K., and likely many other markets, so will we even see a Mario Kart 9 this generation? It's not looking likely to me.

*=Estimate.

Solid weekend. Nothing exciting, of course, but it remained pretty stable and Hayao Miyazaki's three classics remained strong and stayed flat/increased (securing the Top 3 positions for a second week in admissions, but also in revenue this week). If re-releases of Studio Ghibli films help theaters and keeps the box-office going for awhile, I couldn't think of a better way to manage for another month or two.

Rambo: Last Blood and Sonic the Hedgehog experienced sizable second weekend declines, but these drops would be normal under normal circumstances for these two particular films, so I'd consider them "good" in that regard.
